Hope this isn't too picture heavy for you guys. I got a new Kephart from John (Stomper) and decided to take it to the cornfields with me deer hunting. This year our area was given a bonus tag for an anterless deer, along with a regular permit. So between my wife, daughter and I, we were able to harvest 6 deer.

We took three mature deer. My wife shot a one antlered buck that we decided to cull from the gene pool. She uses a Mdl 70 Winchester in 7x57 Mauser. She also took a yearling fawn.

My daughter shot two yearling fawns with her Mdl 70 Winchester in .243 in. And I harvested two mature does with a Belgium Browning Safari Grade .300 Win Mag.

The 10 point buck was taken by my dad who is 81 years old. He was shooting an old Harrington and Richardson rifle in .270 Win and he also has a beautiful old stag handled Case trailing point, but I didn't get a photo of his knife. He was little upset because he laid the sheath on the hood of his pickup to field dress the deer and somewhere along the line, it's lost. Will have to try to find him another.

John's Kephart worked really well for field dressing the deer for a rather large knife. His O-1 steel held a very good edge and I was pleased how it handled in my hand. I've also included other pictures of some knives. The stacked leather handled Bark River is a Lil Boone that my daughter confiscated from me.

We took the three mature deer to a local butcher shop who makes great sausage and deer sticks and jerky. The three yearlings we processed ourselves. The knives in that photo are a Bark River Utility which my wife really likes in the kitchen along with a Bark River Highland in tigerstriped G-10, which she confiscated from me also. The other is an old SS Helle that I've had for longer than I can remember and is really quite a slicer. The bottom one is a Schrade Mdl 1560T which I really like for skinning.

Hope everyone enjoys the knife pictures. My freezer is full and I thank God for a safe and successful hunt.

Mike

Congratulations on a successful hunt! That is the quick way to fill the freezer. I've used that little Schrade 156OT on deer a time or two myself. It does the job way out of proportion to the size of that blade.

Looks like those Barkies served as journeymen trainers for the Kephart.... first time out. The 'lil Boone didn't even get a speck of blood on her.

That Kephart is nice.

Yes it does I am going to have some sauage, chesse, crackers and a slice of apple now LOL Thinking of steaks has made me hungry now LOL

Take care,

Bryan

The Bark river Li Boone got blood on it last season. Bryan the cheese and sausage sound really good.

I wish I had some deer steaks in my freezer, may have to beg some from some hunters I know.
Was the .300 Win Mag enough gun for those deer?:D

Getting hungry for some backstrap. Nice work! Love the Redfield 2x7 on top. Those were my favorite scopes when I still rifle hunted. Had fixed 6X Widefield Lo-Pro that I wish I still had. One of the older ones before they started their decline in the late 80's.

Thanks everyone. Yes the 300 Win is a little big for deer. I inherited the rifle and this is the first year I've used it. The old Redfield worked great and the old Browning is very accurate.Good for shootin across the large corn fields

I guess the good lord didn't take care of those deer very well. Funny how one sided the "good lord" seems to be...

I'm hoping to get both my Kephart and Budget Hunter into a deer this year...we'll see.

Good hunting!

I think the Good Lord put his critter on earth for us to use(eat)

TFin04 hope to see some pictures of your deer hunt.

yum....

I wish someone would take me hunting and show me how to field dress...

as long as the animals are taken cleanly and put to good use, they are part of the earths bounty and i am sure whackafew will say grace for the lord putting this on his table. where i come from families dont eat that well if they do not harvest a couple of white tail in the season. many are too proud for welfare or food stamps, so the deer season is important to them. i would not be too critical of those that hunt, in some ways it allows them keep their pride and independance. i am sure whackafew is greatfull for this years successfull hunt.

So do you just ignore the fact that a food chain exists among all living beings??

Funny how one sided the anti hunters seem to be...
