Deer Season Update.....Elmax Steak Knife Review

Barrabas,

Dude. Awesome review. Made mine look pretty crappy by comparison. Congrats on an amazing blade. I think anyone who is able to get their hands on one of these is gonna be very happy.

Just a quick update...after all the stuff done in previous posts, and a little more.. edge was starting to pull hair a little before shaving, so it was touched up on a ceramic stone and strop..I really like this blade..not only a great slicer, but easy to maintain .

Anyway, I skinned, and deboned two deer yesterday..and it shaved.
This might not sound like much, but skinning deer is one thing...deboning/processing is another..to do them both together with respect to how little I did to touch them up freehand after all the previous work (and considering my freehand skills :grumpy:) is really impressive to me, especially considering how little time I spent on the touch up...unprecedented in my book.

Thanks Busse for another awesome addition to an already killer line up..hope Elmax stays around for a while.
If someone from the Busse Team reads this, please tell Alan that he is a sharpening master; the way I received it from the shop will remain the benchmark I hope to attain..he did an Excellent job!!!

I missed out on the steak knife at Blade. I have the Scrapmaxes and love them. I would love a 3 3/4" thin Elmax drop point Busse hunting knife!! The pics of the shorter steak knife look pretty nice but I think I would like the handle a little bigger maybe.

Oh yeah, great Buck Garth! Looks like fun.

Thanks. You had any luck down your way Brother?

Great reviews, guys! The Elmax blades have definitely become my favorite blade to use in the kitchen. And Garth I always love when you have your "feelings". They are almost always correct!

I am still wondering if the scrapmax series will perform as well as the busse??

Do they have the same heat treat?

This was answered by Jerry not long ago. The original Scrap Maxes received a different HT than any new Elmax coming out of the shop. Jerry and team seem to have cracked the code on the Elmax HT and the newer Elmax coming out should perform the best. That being said I have a scrap max and I am thoroughly impressed with it.

Well no Ohio gun season deer. Gonna have to wait for muzzleloader season to continue the elmax workout. Hopefully others did better this week than I did.

unfortunately no. I saw lots of deer and hunted all week in two different spots but could not get any close enough to shoot. I am pretty sure I have to work during black powder season so I think I am done for this year. Major let down.

Where did Jerry say that? Are you referring to this post of his?

At first we followed Bohler's Heat Treat specs to the letter. Then we started experimenting with our own heat treat protocol on Elmax and believe that we have stumbled upon the perfect formula...... some might say it was stumbled upon by accident.....I prefer to say that an inebriated mind is a creative mind!!!

..... Sometimes it takes a wee bit of scotch to release the inner genius!!! ........ and other times it takes a boatload of scotch before you start stumbling into, onto, and through obstacles......... this discovery involved a boatload of scotch, peanut oil, 2 cheeseburgers, 3 lbs. of bacon, and 10 gallons of cryo in a 5 gallon bucket!!!! ..... I know that sounds too technical to follow, but it works really, really well ! ! !

Let's drink!

Jerry
:D

Jerry does not specifically state that the ScapMax blades have a different HT. The phrase "At first we followed..." could refer to the first trials at the shop on prototype blades, and the continued experiments that lead to the perfect formula could have been before any knives were ever sold.

You are correct Guy. I was going off memory. I guess I assumed that is what Jerry meant because his reply came shortly after this post.

So how is the steak knife different from the. Scrapyard 340? I have a 340 with a factory edge that would shave when new. I cleaned 1 deer and it dulled quickly. Is the HT different on the steak knives ? RC higher? I believe the grinds are the same. Curious as I like Elmax and will consider picking up the steak knife if I could see some comparisons in size to a CABS or similar model as well as figure out the HT question.

With a lot more work coming up on the farm this week, I needed a functional belt sheath quickly..so thought it fitting to do my last bit of testing on leather, using it exclusively for all cutting performed; once again it exceeded my expectations...handle, and blade ergos really came into play on this exercise.

The Steak Knife sheath, made by the Busse it carries, is the simple (made in haste) belt pouch sheath:
