Having done such a wonderful job of bringing this old Sfilato back to life (bottom knife),Sfilati 3.jpg I have asked my knifemaker friend, Rhidian to do the same with this old Sheffield Lambfoot/Sheepfoot!!Lockwood relic 1.jpgLockwood relic 3.jpg
I've become enamored of the subtle curves in the pattern, and would like to add an etch as well, which brings me to a question, and a plea for suggestions from my fellow Porch People!!
The question; Is it a Lambfoot, or a Sheepfoot?? Note the very slight distal taper to the width of the blade.
Some suggestions maybe; There is an etch, "Young's Sheep Dips"!! I'd like to put a similarly-'flavored' etch, on the reproduction, and would like some inspiration from my peers here, if You'All are willing!!
"CHARLIE'S FOLLY"
"WAYNORTH'S WONDER"
RHIDIAN'S REPRISE"
"OLD AS YOU FEEL"

Poor examples, but I hope you get the idea!
Here's the best part!! If i use your etch idea, I will send you a nice Knife!!
A surprise worth your while, I guarantee!!
Please just put one or two in each post - don't flood me out!!
I hope this is fun for you!!

Actually this is a GA of sorts!! Ha Ha!!

(P.S. I have edited the title twice now, due to my ignorance of correct French usage!!
Please be patient!! I hope it's finally correct!!)

Interesting blade shape, Charlie.
It almost looks like a Razor with its rounded spine.
It's a wonderful knife to be sure, can't wait to see the reproduction.

That's an interesting knife Charlie! Young's must have sold a heck of a lot of Sheep Dip! :D Definitely not a Lambsfoot, but it's a darn interesting blade. Please tell us more old bean :) It's not really a Sheepsfoot in my opinion, or at least it's an odd an unusual one. To me, what it looks most like is the blade on your first Ancient Barlows, a 'Short Beak' blade. How about 'Captain Beaky'?! :D ;)

So here's that Short Beak blade, on a Barlow, from 'Smith's Key'

Couple of questions Charlie. Can you make out the maker? (Edit - Lockwood. Weren't those Ettricks with the YSD etch Lockwoods?) Does it have a half-stop? Would love to see more of it

"Missing Link" ;)

The "Tripper-Upper"? Since there is a question on the blade profile?

Could it be a Goatfoot blade?
It might be an optical illusion, but it looks like the end gets a little wider forward of the nail nick.

A hybrid/cross between a Sheepfoot and Lambfoot? (even tho both are Veal.)

The shape of the handle almost screams Ettrick and while the Ettrick is said to have been designed by the Earl of Wharncliffe ... that is definitely not the blade often seen associated with the Earl or found on most Ettrick knives I've seen.

Young's Sheep Dips was a product sold by the international manufacturer: Robert Young & Co Ltd. Glasgow. So this is an SFO commissioned by Young, probably from the Lockwood Brothers on Sylvester Street, Sheffield and which was a subsidiary company of Joseph Elliot & Sons (Sheffield) Ltd..

Interesting Link: Similar Knives

As far as blade etch, I'd go along with the LOCKWOOD BROTHERS ... REAL KNIFE (with a Rhea bird logo) ... or maybe something else ;) LOL

As you know Charlie, later Lockwood Brothers knives (like the wee triple rat Barlow I sent you), often have the Joseph Elliott 'C Cross (reversed) C' mark. How about having that put on. Nobody owns the mark currently

Or how about 'BEST HERMANOS'?! :D

The shell of the old Lockwood factory still stands on Spital Hill in Sheffield - 'Spital Hill Slayer'?! :D ;)

Thank you, Short Beak is the name I couldn't think of. It looks like a long coping blade to me.
I wonder if the curve in the blade is original , or the result of use and sharpening?

Yes, exactly  I wondered the same, and suspect the latter

All three of those are winners Rachel! 🤣 🤣

I forget how long I spent trying to find a name for the Short Beak blade on Charlie's Ancient Barlows. Why does he post this interesting stuff when I'm just about to go to bed?!

GOATfoot (GOAT meaning Greatest Of All Time and an acronym for sheep)
Charlie's Angle (spinoff of Charlie's Angel)

Definitely a Lockwood, Jack. The knife is on Rhidian's bench as we speak!
I'll see if I have another pic!
Rhid is going to try to duplicate the "flat-cap" jigging!!

This pic doesn't help much.NZ Lockwood 2.jpg
