Delica 5?

Just curious if anyone has heard anything about a new Delica. I love the 4 and can't imagine it getting much better. I did a quick search but not much came up. Just daydreaming . . .:D

Well I heard from the owner of Siderco "Hal Messer" is going to release the Delican 5 with "surgical stainless steel" and bi-lateral uni-cut tactical serrations designed by the Navy SEALS and tested by Army Rangers. Can't wait!!!

Isn't it supposed to have an adamantium steel blade and a diamond encrusted g-50 handle??? I also heard a rumor that the steel is made from material in mars aswell, but that is just a rumor.

If you buy both a 2 and a 3 and duct tape them together, you'll have a 5. I have three of them already..

New generations of knives have always been based on major changes other than steel and grind. Delica 3 brought the metal clip, Delica 4 added liners, screw construction, jimping, and 4 way clip mounting. Can't really see much more that could be added, or that there's a groundswell of requests to change (aside from the tip). Unless, of course, Spyderco finds a way to make low rider wire clips and 4 way clip mounting compatible.

I'm sure Spyderco will continue to upgrade their knives, it's just a matter of time. From Delica to Delica 4, Hunter to Stretch 2, Police to Police G-10 etc etc. I believe that no matter how good their current knives are, Sal still find ways to improve them.

They might introduce that bushing system that is seen in the Native 5. Although that may raise cost and may be difficult since the maker is in Japan. Just a thought.

Hi JiffyPark,

As Deacon mentioned, new tooling requires some definite improvements. Usually those improvements are the suggestions of those carrying and using the model.

What would you change?

sal

Wow, it's hard to think of anything that could be changed and still keep it a delica. There are plenty of things that could be changed but those features are offered on other models. I would love to see g-10 models back in production, but that wouldn't make it a D5, maybe a different lock but that would make it a sage. I think it's pretty great how it is, but maybe someone more creative than me will think of something :D

A Delica 1 was my first Spyderco and I think the 4 is the best yet. I would like to see a slightly thinner tip and wire clip as at least an option but other than that I wouldn't change anything.

I would like to see some sprints with titanium, G10 and carbon fiber handles. Perhaps even a couple with M4 or S30V steel.

I think the construction of the squeak is a good start. Imagine a delica with a choil, no liners, and a wire clip.

The Delica could be made flushed when closed, just like the stretch 2 vs endura 4 and para 2 vs para. I'd like a lower clip carry, but that's just my preference on small-mid sized knives. I would not mind a different steel, maybe BD-1 to keep cost down.

I'm in love with my Delica 4's FFG. But I guess I'll make one or two suggestions:

Keepers:

-Please KEEP THE FFG!
-Keep the drilled-out liners
-Steel doesn't really matter, the knife does not actually need s30v or anything more high-end. However some sprint runs in s30v or ZDP won't hurt ;-).

Change:

-A finger choil such as in Byrd meadowlark etc.
-Low-riding pocket clip adjustable to 4 sizes
-Carbon fiber handles would look really awesome, but the bi-directional grip pattern atm probably is more grippy though...

The only way I can see improving that knife would be a small choil, even if you curved the frn so that makes up half the choil and then just jimp the steel that's already there

I guess I'm in the minority when it comes to a choil. I have a Meadowlark 2 and prefer the choil-less Delica by a large margin. With a blade of around 3 inches I've never felt the need for a choil.
With so many people requesting it, I'm glad I have several D4's because if a choil shows on the next version, I'll likely skip getting one.
I like the Delica as it is in it's current configuration. Of course I also like the saber grind where most seem to prefer the full flat. I have several of both. The Delica as it stands is probably the most comfortable folder I own. It's also my most often carried. And yes, I have a Stretch as well.
