Delica 5?

The Delica is one of my all time favorite knives so it's always fun to talk about improvements but I don't like the thought of changing it to include a choil, that would change the shape to much. To me the basic shape has remained the same and I like that, so I wouldn't change anything about the handle of the 4. I guess if I really think about it the only thing that I would change about the 4 is to go back to the pointier tip of the previous models. Also I guess while I'm at it I would also prefer it to be hollow ground in place of the saber grind. I haven't tried a FFG model yet, though I have played with one in the store, I just think the tip looks a little to thin. Now I know we've had this discussion before that if you only use it for cutting nothing bad will happen and I agree for the most part. I just think subconsciously I would always "baby" it or be less apt to use it like I would a hollow or saber ground model therefore making it a less useful tool to me.

I know my two small changes aren't nearly enough of an "improvement" to warrant a change to the Delica 5 and the investment in tooling costs but these are honestly the only things I would change about the knife. Like I said these are some of my favorite knives and if I had to guess I would say they have gotten more pocket time over the years than any other knife I have ever owned, love'em. I just think the basic shape needs to stay the same because that's the way it's always been and that's what makes it a Delica. In my mind if you changed it enough to add a choil it would become something else, just MHO.

I'm in love with my Delica 4's FFG. But I guess I'll make one or two suggestions:

Keepers:

-Please KEEP THE FFG!
-Keep the drilled-out liners
-Steel doesn't really matter, the knife does not actually need s30v or anything more high-end. However some sprint runs in s30v or ZDP won't hurt ;-).

Change:

-A finger choil such as in Byrd meadowlark etc.
-Low-riding pocket clip adjustable to 4 sizes
-Carbon fiber handles would look really awesome, but the bi-directional grip pattern atm probably is more grippy though...

I don't really want a choil either. There are many Spyderco models that already have them and I agree that adding one makes the Delica something else. Like I said before I would like the point on the older models.

The Delica 4 is my edc 90% of the time. A finger choil version would be awesome. I'd try a wire clip too or maybe offer a stonewashed clip (I tend to strip the black paint off mine, I prefer that look). Other then that, nothing else needs to be done.

Maybe a limited run of some s30v blades with funkier handle colors? Desert tan? Digi camo? Red?

I'm probably one of the most avid fans of the 50/50 choil but I honestly think adding one to the Delica would not be a change for the better. Mainly because, while many of "us" might like it better that way, the majority of buyers would not. Simple truth is that no model with a 50/50 choil comes close to matching either the Delica or the Endura in terms of sales. OTOH, replacing the exposed tang with more edge might make it even more attractive to a large segment of its audience. That might require a redesigned midlock, something like the Chaparral's, to eliminate the need for a blade kick by adding stop pins.

Agreed. Adding a choil would change the shape and feel of the knife too much. If you wanted a choil and wire clip, why not just buy a caly 3? I too am in the minority of loving the saber ground D4s. My knife? saber ground zdp 189, g10 handles. dead sexy.

Well Sal, since your asking how about XHP and frn ( new faux g10 pattern ) material that's similar to the one on the uk penknife, this stuff is super light and has an excellent feel and I don't think I need to say much about XHP.

I think a better opening would be nice. I dont know if its just me, but my delica is quite hard to open unless i loosen my pivot where there is just too much blade play.

I carry a delica as a backup edc and think its an awesome knife but I wouldn't mind seeing a different lock and a steel upgrade.

Don't change anything that would make the knife more expensive! Leave it choil-less, plenty of other models have them. I think the only thing I wish was different is that during heavy saber grip cutting I wish the handle was a little wider as I can't get a good grip on it.

A little different take. The one change I don't want is to increase the blade length. I for one in a 3" area (legal stuff) don't want to excluded from a great knife.

I love my Blue FFG delica 4, i would like to see more handle material options though!

g10 - micarta - carbon fiber - stabilized wood(s) ! ! !

AND A "LIFE SHARP" program!

-ISK

and how bout a sprint run frame lock in a carbon tool steel ( d2 - a2 ) or 440v!!!!!

I would not change the basic design of the D4. Just introduce sprint runs every so often with minor changes ie ... stone wash blades, denim G10 handles, wire clips, carbon fiber handles.
Please do not eliminate the standard Saber grind.

I'd like a choil, but then it wouldn't be a Delica if it had one. A Wire Clip might be nice.

Are you refering to factory sharpening service? If so Spyderco has offered that for years and unlike other companies they will sharpen anything regardless of edge type.

Like this, you mean? I've already got one. :)
