Delica...usable knife or paper weight

The Delica and other backlocks are some of my favorites. When you get past the middle finger and thumb flicking honeymoon these knives have great ergos and balance. They are made for cutting stuff. Not so good for knifeturbation in front of the TV. And backlocks are very easy to close one handed once you learn how to do it. Best way to open a Delica is jam your thumb tip in the hole and push the blade up and out using your thumb to guide the blade to a fully open and locked position. To close....

jpm2,
I agree with 1 and 2.
As far as
3. lock bar drag on the tang, is determined by spring pressure.

I would add :
  • surface finish of the mating parts

  • hardness of the ends of the mating parts to prevent galling.
Which can happen even between hardened parts with significant pressure between them; think valve guide to cam lobe damage on start up of an old style internal combustion engine with inadequate oil pressure. The reason for graphite lobe lube but I am going down a rat hole here.

No doubt surface finish, galling due to inadequate materials and/or heat treat, etc can have an affect.
unmated bearing surfaces
was used as a sort of catch-all.
I would hope any steels used for spring and blade contact surfaces would have adequate adhesive wear properties not to gall from the relatively light spring pressures in a knife lock when properly heat treated.

There's one possibility that the lockbar has burrs that rub against liner. This cause unnecessary stiffness as the lockbar couldn't move up and down freely. I found this in my HAP40 Stretch and removed the burrs with worn DMT EEF resolved it.

Yes I've run exhaustive tests, using various weights of paper, . . . cross grain and coplanar and have, after months of testing, arived at what I feel represents rigorous scientific guide lines, at least until we can bring in Cal Tech on this one . . . and I think I can say with at least a modicom of certainty that the Buck 110 makes a noticably better paper weight than the Delica.

Good thing my go to hunting folder is a 112 with a one arm bandit.

Hi DWDickey,

Perhaps you can sent it to me? The Delica was designed and crafted to be a major user, and if you're not getting that, it deserves a "look-see".

Hey Wowbagger,

I think it woud work for light paper, after all, it is a light weight. ;)

I might just take you up on your offer. That is what I call going above and beyond for a customer. There not many companies that will support their products and customer base so well and even fewer who do it as personally.

dw^ Don't be surprised if the Delica turns out to be one of your favorite folders, if not your favorite.

I'm just not sure why it needs to flick open. Maybe stick to liner locks.

I'm not sure either. I've never owned a delica that could flick open and I was ok with it. I'm going to have to pull mine out when I get home to look it over now.

Where's that Wharncliffe at!!!!!!...........

Never had a delica but my tatanka is completely unflickable. But that's ok. I knew before I bought.

My zome delica is stiff too, can't flick it open but that's not what it was meant for. Delica is a great smaller cutting machine!

Because that's what I paid for and expect. I bought a one handed opening knife that isn't performing up to expectations, your expectations might be different but for the money I expect it to perform as advertised.

User yes, favorite highly unlikely. It's still hard to beat that reground EKI HD7 I bought from you several years back!

dw- Yes. The zero ground blade is one impressive cutter. I'm glad you still have it.
I have an HD7 but my FFG Delica has been getting more pocket time.

I think Jazzz meant, you can probably still open it one handed, but it doesn't need to *flick* open. In my experience backlocks aren't the best *flickers*.
