Delica...usable knife or paper weight

If it's got a Spyder on it, it better flick open.. unless it's a fixed blade.
That's my standard, that I have come to expect, from my Spyderco's..
If they don't, I'lll give them some pocket time. Hit them with Virgin oil, and adjust them.
Some times I over tighten them, open and close them 100 times, then back the pivot off. Between stiff and no blade play..

If they still don't, I don't own them..

I'm not talking, thumb flick either.. I can "Spyder flick" them..

Hi DWDickey,

Perhaps you can sent it to me? The Delica was designed and crafted to be a major user, and if you're not getting that, it deserves a "look-see".

Hey Wowbagger,

I think it woud work for light paper, after all, it is a light weight. ;)

Can't beat that kind of warranty!

I'd never had a full size Delica, I did (do) have a Kahr Arms, but wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the full blades, so I got a user Saber ZDP off the exchange, and wow! I can see what all the fuss is about now : ) Maybe because it's used, maybe it's the extra weight from the saber grind, but mine definitely flicks open. I love it so much, I got a set of Boomer's Lil Para scales, and I love it even more! BTW, the Kahr doesn't really flick : (

Because that's what I paid for and expect. I bought a one handed opening knife that isn't performing up to expectations, your expectations might be different but for the money I expect it to perform as advertised.

If you expected a lightweight backlock knife with a sub-three inch blade to flip open like a liner lock Military, I'd say your expectations were unrealistic at best. Send it in, but don't be surprised if Sal sends it back with a note that says there is nothing wrong with it.

I had a bright blue handled ffg version. Miss that little knife.

Went missing a few months ago. Can't, for the life of me, find it anywhere.

Mine was easy to open one handed. Pretty quick.

It is advertised to be able to be opened with one hand.
Yours does that, right?
I've never seen it advertised as being designed for flicking open with ease.

It was designed to open with one hand reliably, like say, when you only have one hand. Flicking is for show, and (don't y'all get mad) it makes knife users look bad in front of NKP's. Actually, when I see people flick, I just roll my eyes and am annoyed, especially in videos. That's my 2 cents.

Just to pile it on. The Delica is not a flipper and has never been advertised as one. If it is is able to be opened with one hand then it is doing exactly what it was advertised to do.

I wish knives were still made for cutting.

What do you expect us to do that warranty and repair can't? Why would you bring this here first without giving them a chance to look at it? If you want to keep it then send it in to Spyderco, if you don't then send it to me. :D

I have 3. New out of the box, they were all a tad different as far as opening. Funny part is my favorite one now, is the one that was probably most difficult to open when fresh out the box. But, I have probably opened and closed it 2k times now, for both work and play. It is butter smooth now and I can flick it with my thumb with ease. This was not possible when new. But, I agree with others about weight, size and technique all being part of your personal knife flick formula.
FWIW: I never took mine apart. I just tightened the pivot screw a little so it was pretty stiff, then worked it about 1000 times. Then I loosen the pivot, clean the knife with warm water and dish soap. Next a long rinse under really hot water. Let it dry, adjust the pivot just right, then lubed it with some CR lube. I have worked it about 500 or so more times with use and play. It is super smooth.
I am not sure how others break them in, but if you haven't tried what I did, give it a shot.

It's a base black FRN with a combo edge blade. Only makes on the blade were from some debris that got between the den scale and the baked itself at one point and rubbed a light line in the blade finish. I had one before that I lost that seemed much smoother, but I didn't have it long before it was lost at work (retail store) so I bought this one as a replacement. I also have an older one in SS that's pinned with a full spyder edge and it flips like I'd expect and I've never carried it, it was just a good buy. I can loosed the pivot to the point of the screw being loose and it still drags, I can tighten it all the way up and there's very little extra resistance, so I do think it's something other than the pivot but loosening the other screws in sequence really doesn't seem to have an affect unless they are all loose. Maybe I'll take the whole knife apart again and check the liners for a bend?

I have many higher end options hence why I just leave this lay in a drawer, but every so often I like to switch things up and whatever I have I do want it to work as intended.

If English is not your first language I'll give you a pass. If English is your first language, you need to proof read a bit if you want people to decipher what you're trying to say.

Exactly.

Delica is a fine knife, just little short!I wish Sal would make lighter version of delica and endura without liners, with thin blades and in ffg.

i dont get flicking open. never needed to open a knife that fast to open a box or trim something, etc. makes zero sense. increases component wear for no reason other than to make the knife holder feel cool, i guess? allows higher chances for an improper open without proper lock up and basically offers zero advantages. too each their own i guess.

Lock backs are not designed as flippers. The bias towards closing is there for a reason and if one doesn't like it they should get a different style knife. Preferably a flipper which Spyderco also makes. We do get people who come here and don't know about lock back designs so don't get confused if they are trying to adjust the pivot. That doesn't mean they know what they are talking about.

That's why e have these discussions, to edge-u-cate people relatively new to quality knives. :)
