Did you ever look at your knives and say enough is enough?

Yes!

I felt that way more and more as I got older, and by the time I was in my late 40's, I was downsizing. By my 50's, I had downsized both my knife collection and gun collection, as well as my tool collection, and fishing gear collection. It was soooo liberating. In my younger single days I had build up a nice collection of customs like Randall's. George Stone, Harry Morseth, and others. High end production for back then, to include Pacific Cutlery balisongs. One day I looked at it all, and asked myself what I was doing with all that shite. Gave away what the kids and family wanted, sold off the customs, had a giant yard sale for other stuff. It felt like a ball and chain got cut off of me. Used the money to take a month trip around the country, camping out at Badlands, Yellowstone, Bryce, Canyonlands and Arches national parks. Stayed at the Bright Angel Lodge Grand Canyon, toured Mesa Verde and the Pueblos. Had a ball and made memories to last our lifetime.

Too much of anything gets ridiculous after a while. I had knives and guns that had not been used in years. Now I just have a small amount of everything, and I can even find stuff in the house enow pretty quick. All my knives will fit in one small container in the drawer. Last count I had less than a dozen knives. My new rule is; one in=one out. If someone gifts me a knife, I gift one out to keep the karma level.

With any bobbie, it's easy to loose sight of the fact that there are way more important things in life than this collection of inanimate objects that we obsess over. Life is not about knives, or guns, or cars, or any other thing. It's about living. Going out and doing. And about the people in your life like your kids, your parents, and friends that are way more important than things.

But I still like knives, and wouldn't dream about going out the door without at least two on me. JUst have to keep it in perspective.

Cleaning house a bit. Mailed out three NIB Caly3's in ZDP and one in SuperBlue yesterday to close relatives. I suspect they'll be happy. Great knives.

If my knives are not in my EDC rotation, I sell them.
I need to get a grip!

I'm a few months late on this reply... but that's some FUNNY shi$!!! I too feel the same way. No Way is that acceptable.

No.

I'm not always actively looking for new knife purchases, but there is always a "wanted" list in the back of my mind in addition to desireable new product releases. Looking at the collection reminds me of how many I don't have. Heck, the Knifeworks website has more knives than I do - unacceptable! :D

Enough is enough...true.

But I tend to buy one, sell one, buy one, sell one...when I'm lucky enough to sell one...

Not me, I just started my knife collection. Maybe some day I'll feel that way, but I'm guessing that'll be many years from now.

MAP pricing helped me put the brakes on.

I am getting an FRN Native 5 when they come out. And I'd get a G-10 Caly 3 if I found one at a good price.

I have been lucky enough to trade a bunch of knives. Since I had surgery on my foot I have all day to wheel and deal on BF. It's a good thing, and a bad thing. I do ask myself "how many do you need?"

Here's what I have left of daily using rotation. The only other knives I have are a alox SAK and a folder made on the Moran farm about 1944 or so. And one Buck sheath knife. All the others have been sold off/given away over on the traditional forum. I still love knives and come here to look, and talk about them, but for this old man, this is enough to fishing up with. I still will always have a knife or two in my pockets.

I do have to admit my approach has changed and I do think about the numbers.
When I look at my knives and handle them I like them, however there are some I wouln'd buy again.
Sorry for the short answer, but I have to look for the next one.....

I moved from the country to a nice suburban neighborhood about a year ago. The truth is, I just don't really need a knife as much here in suburbia. I have since sold 2/3 of my collection to start a savings for emergencies and such. At a certain point I decided that it was impractical for me to have so many knives that I would most likely never use. My favorite knife now is a Spyderco dragonfly 2, which I have a few backups for and 2 benchmade mini axis lock knives which are really nice. Aside from a mora #2 and a USMC short fixed blade, I'm set. Though, I am still wanting a small keychain knife for some reason.

I think I'm rapidly coming to the point where I'm going to start downsizing. I do enjoy having a lot of really nice knives, but I have kind of started to feel guilty because I have stopped rotating knives for the most part and a great number of them sit unused. My ZT 0562 and my large CF Insingo Seb just can't be matched for daily carry, with the exception of the small SAK or Traditional in my watch pocket I usually also have.

I look at all my awesome knives that were made to be used, and it kind of bums me out that I don't have the sort of lifestyle where they'd all get that attention they deserve.

I'd like to try out a few more patterns but I'm not in any hurry to spend. I have less than a dozen and not into hoarding so if I go over 10 or 12 knives, I either try to sell or give away a few. When I decide not to spend, I'm ok with watching other people buy knives and posting pictures here. :p

I have. I'd like to get rid of everything but a few great users, and then get a few nice knives with the funds. I find I probably carry probably 7 of the 30something knives I have.

I have somewhere around thirty knives plus, and I am begining to say enough is enough. Because of this, I now am shifting the way I buy knives. First, I look at blade design and then I check and see if I have a need for it in one of the following areas:

1. Dress knife.

2. Light duty.

3. Medium duty.

4. Heavy duty/ fixed blade.

5. Economy/ loaner.

6. Special needs (utility knife for tool box, SAK that stays in the car, rescue knife in the 1st aid kit, etc.).

If the knife I want to purchase fills a void, I will buy it. If the knife does not, then I have to consider if it will do the job better than what I already own.

I started considering this system almost two months ago and it has helped me decide if I will ever use a knife or if I am just spending money. It really has been a real eye opener for me. For example, I have found that I am not a real big fan of clip point knives and I don't want/need more than three: AirSOG, Buck 112 Ranger, and an Ontario pilot's knife. These cover the light, medium, and heavy duty groups. I will never carry a clip point for formal dress and the AirSOG could be used for causal dress knife if needed.

I have all the knives I need, and then some, for sure. I really haven't experienced any blade lust recently. Well, not since I NEEDed a new Leatherman a couple of months ago, anyway. I'll just stick to buying the forum traditional knife every year.
