Did you ever look at your knives and say enough is enough?

I have ~ 25 fixed blades, folders, and multitools. Probably enough. So I justify additional purchases now by getting knives for my teenage son. Teenage guys NEVER think they can have enough knives :D

....And then one day, he'll be older, and join this forum, and his collection will continue to grow!

I've only got 7 knives and one sword, other then one fixed blade and one folder I edc most of the rarely see use, and the ones that do I've made excuses as to why it needs to be used (9" blades on pizza, because pizza cutter is a pos etc lol). Only four of those knives can even be edced due to laws. Money is tight right now so I can't keep buying, but if it wasn't, I'd probably end up owning more.

You see, I have this problem, where I randomly browse knifecenter or Amazon and look at several different knives, and think about how each blade shape or length would be more useful for this scenario (dumb things like justifying tuff lite solely for box use, which is stupid considering 90% of my edc is opening crap), then comes all the crazy shtf scenarios or the survival scenarios regardless of the fact I haven't had the chance to even be much outdoors for a few years.

If money was no issue I don't think I'd be content until I had one of everything, despite the fact I'll rarely use half of it.

Don't know what it is about knives but there's some sort of primal urge to collect and have as many knives as possible lol.

I downsized from around 250 blades (folders and fixed) to 12. I now have all the knives I will ever need, no debt, and some cash left to boot.

I've thought about this lately and as I look at the dozen or less knives and multitools I own, how many do you really need? If you're a collector, I can see it's no different than say a baseball card collection or comics, but I like to use all of my knives and I don't feel much of a need to buy much more. Almost like I'm starting to feel like too much of anything is not a good thing. Thoughts?
Death to the heretic! ;)

For me the bug bit real early, I was rockin the ole fixed blade survival knife with the compass on top on my side at about 10 years old, of course plastic machine gun and camies with my buds back in the old neighborhood in the early 80's. I've always been a knife guy, now all the cool ones I like just seem to get more and more expensive. I don't drink or smoke or anything so gotta spend my doe on something,... and what better then a super trick fixed blade,... or 30. Just sayin.:emot-yarr:

I certainly have all the knives I need as far as my current uses go, but if I admitted that I shouldn't buy anymore, I'd have to do the same about my other collecting hobbies as well!

Nope, if I did, I'd quit buying them. Instead, I keep adding more to my wishlist. I like collecting them, even if it's just for me. Sure, most people don't understand why I keep buying machetes, but I LIKE machetes, so buying more makes me happy. I pay what needs to be paid, so it doesn't matter what I do with my spending money. Usually it's knives, sometimes it's movies or CDs, sometimes it's going out with friends, etc.

All the time. But then some awesome deal comes up or a company releases something that I "need".

I'm pretty much there already. Anything that comes up that interests me is usually too expensive and the money I've invested already steers me off. If you don't settle on a handful of " grail" knives , you'll never stop buying.

Sometimes it's good to re-visit and use what you haven't in a while , think why you bought it in the first place , and fall in love with it all over again.

Numerous times.
Often that cycle repeats itself after testings and more testings in different environments and you getting close to knowing your style, applications and preferences.
Then you trade/sell off those that YOU THOUGHT you will keep and then acquired more into that cycle.
With many different grinds, steels, handle materials, makers and etc, we are only dealing with knives.
3 years ago a set of forged kitchen knives were just kitchen tools.
3 years later it is worth my time to study the mystics behind it.

Enough? Not something i want to think as long as i have enough funds for it.

The part of your question about how many you need is the part I like. I need my Siss Army Pen Knife as it HAS a small scissors, tweezers, and a few things I use regularly. I need the Big EDC for defence, or cutting what the Swiss will not. That is all I need.

BTW I have two spares should one need repair, service, or get lost. That is all I need, and have.

I try to. It works sometimes.

I have a total of three knives right now but have owned up to over 60 at one time.
Here soon it'll be 4, then I'll make money and it'll be 5, then 6, then 7, and the madness just never stops.
Three knives is more than enough for all of my needs, however, I love pocket knives and continue to buy them because I like them and it's a great hobby for me. So overall, I don't get more because I need more, I get more because I'd like to have more lol.

I've gotten to the point that I only own knives I use If I don't use it--it gets sold or traded. No safe queens here.

Sometimes, yes, then think I really need to satisfy my need to try them out, sharpen them, experiment how to use them, and before another catches my eye. I find myself going in cycles and styles for one kind then another, sometimes different steels.
