Did your Traditional knife get a workout today? -Part II

And speaking of pork, the Camillus 23 Mom gave me for Christmas saw to the thick-sliced ham at church.

(Yesterday, actually…)
Found a beech branch that got snapped off in last week’s storm, so I took a chunk:

Stripping bark is the type of task where the Opinel really shines. The thin blade and comfortable handle made the job a breeze:

I’m trying to decide if I want to make a cane-sized or staff-sized walking stick with it (for the next time my back goes out). I suppose I will start with a staff, and if it is too cumbersome, cut it down.

Staff. You can ... "reach out" ... to the hungry "puppy" or "puppies" that "think" you would make a tasty snack, before it or they are close enough to take a bite, when you're out walking or hiking. 😁👍

(If you're trained in staff work, either can be used for defense against predators in the concrete jungle. The staff still has a reach advantage, but sticks out more than a walking stick.)

Good thinking.
I have a piece of oak that's a little short for a staff, but I'll have to get the cane-length just right, because I won't want to cut down the narrow end and lose all those little knots.
I find, when I really need a cane, I appreciate a hand-filling handle. Elegance be ding-blasted.

I have made several of these,I strip bark with the back of a lock back blade.

I oil them, drill a hole for a wrist strap of para cord and then fit a ferrule.

A bit over the top perhaps 😁

what is the knife with saw I think I need one 😄

CelloDan CelloDan asked me the same question in the “A Walk in Nature” thread, so I have a response all ready for you!:D:thumbsup:
It is a Mikov (Czech) version of a German-style hunting knife, with faux-stag covers. I bought it at a very deep discount from a US dealer that was liquidating its stock of Mikovs ( @euroken alerted me to the deal). The saw is excellent, as good or better than the one on my Victorinox Fieldmaster, but I have not managed to put more than just a decent working edge on the 440A blade yet - I probably just don’t know how.

Yes, i've practiced the "canne d'armes" along with the "savate" for many years when i was young. I'm getting old but i do think my good health and shape come from that time.

Dan.
It looks like that requires way more finesse and coordination than I have ever had. I’m more of a matraque/manche de pioche kind of guy… 🤣

Yes, it requires more speed and accuracy than muscular strength. It takes years of practice to get the technique and to don't have to think about it when in action. The result was what we called "élégance".

I used my full sized sodbuster to cut some vinyl tubing for a customer
And when I pulled it out and opened it he was all...woah why you carrying a pocket sword!

Heh
Wonder how the customer would have reacted if you were totin' a Cold Steel ELAND (ratchet lock, 5" blade) or KUDU (ratchet lock 4.25" blade), or a two blade slipjoint Folding Hunter (4" blades).😱 There are larger folding "pocket knives" out there. 😁 Saw a photo of one with a 12 or 14 inch blade, (handle a inch or so longer) not that long ago. That one really was a folding two hand short sword. 😳
The ratchet lock sounds like a ratchet when you open and close the blade, too. They are not quiet when opening or closing. 😁
