Why should it be corrected if it's not a problem? Don't break it if it ain't fixed or something like that right?

Here's a question for you more mechanically inclined folks, is it better for bearings to run in a race rather than a flat plane?

For the purpose of what the bearings are supposed to be there -- fast smooth flipping, you want the least friction / resistance (which is why the bearings are there in the first place). (But I'm not saying bearings are the only way to have fast smooth flipping.) To get the least friction, you want the minimum surface contact. To get the minimum surface contact, you want the round bearings running on a flat plane.

We can definitely agree on that but it should go the same way in reverse. If your buddy said something that is pretty neutral but could be perceived as being dickheaded, you'd give him the benefit of doubt that he only meant to be helpful. Seems like most want it one way, speak softly about KAI and their products, but not in reverse, speak softly about fellow forum members and their views.

Being a member of this forum I'd think it'd be more important to protect and defend fellow forumites than to defend a company that supposedly has no ties to the forum.

If I wasn't sure what he meant , I would ask him how he meant it. And again, it isn't what we say, it is how we say it. I am not an idiot , I know KAI has made mistakes, we all do, but they work at fixing them, like the steel lockbar inserts for example. I don't want to go way out there, but as you may know the world is not becoming a better place to live on a daily basis, it is getting worse all the time, the lack of respect for our fellow man and everything else is what I believe to be at the root of the problem. So I just choose to try and be nice and say things that will build up rather than tear down, wether it be KAI, you or anyone for that matter.

I dont think there is a direct correlation with the amount of time you spend chatting on a forum and expertise, just a motley assortment of opinions that you choose to agree with or not.

Im sorry you confuse my opinions or choices like not buying the knife with a unicorn with rainbows coming out of its but on the handle as my expertise, just a choice based on my opinion.

Lol dude you've been here less than a month and you think you know more than SO many highly respected makers/companies you just shit on.

You should start making knives since you know so much!

:D

Respectable. I wish we could all be that way more often. Truly.

Bodog,

I'm sure I missed a couple, but by my count you've used the words "retard, retarded, retardedly" 9 times in this thread. I'm not that sensitive things to like this, but seriously, dude, maybe time to find a new word.

I should have just looked at the knife better at the store,...but I was on the phone donating to my favorite homeless charity and trying to find the owner of a lost poodle all at the same time.

On a side note does anyone know why needle bearings aren't used for pivots? Seems like they would solve most of the issues discussed in this thread.

Needle bearings will have more surface to surface contact than ball bearings. Plus how are you going to use needle bearings? It would have to be around the shaft to be useful. If you're going to lay the needle bearings flat against the handle's inner surface and the blade, it's not going to work. Just imagine how fast the outside end of the needle bearing would have to roll compared to the end near the center.

Since the needle bearing can't have different speeds at the two ends, using it will actually slow down the flipping as it drags.

Ken Onion.......A detail of the caged bearings, internal stop pin and raced washers.
Your favorite knife is designed by Ken Onion. Ken Onion uses IKBS lol... So the designer of your favorite knife thinks that titanium races are fine but you still think it's a design flaw?

This thread is not going to end well so we'll just call it a day. Also, to address the issue brought up regarding clones:
here's a picture of a 80 dollar Chinese knife..... note the hardened steel washers for the bearings to ride on?

Different grades of Titanium exist, some are not suitable for knife making, some are alloyed to the point where they can barely be classified as Ti because of their content (more Aluminum than anything else). That knife in your picture is a POS, that is why it needs those extra washers. Hard to imagine. I know.
