disappointed in Benchmade

Define "sharp". I cut myself with one(943SBK, on the plain edge). Would that happen with a dull knife?

^^Exactly. I'm always amazed by the stuff people will whine about, and the justifications they'll come up with to explain why this very basic question isn't the only sensible response to their whining.

Yeah really, I don't care how sharp the factory edges are, I put my own edge on my knives once I get them before I use them.

i get that part but this wasnt a thread about sharpening. my point was if the op wanted advice on sharpening knives then he would have requested it. IMO some of the responses came off sarcastic and being that i've dealt with that before it bothered me.

I agree with the OP. A knife should come sharp. It is ridiculous to suggest otherwise. Did you buy your new car without an engine because the car company didn't know that you might want to go somewhere?

Whether or not someone knows how to sharpen a knife has nothing to do with it. Did someone actually suggest Benchmade doesn't sharpen their knives because they sell to the military?

I'm ashamed at the elitism some of you are displaying. Unless of course I am mistaken and you are really saying you don't like your knives to be be sharp.

I could say more but I will bite my tongue for now.

also, it's no about a knife getting dull. he's talking about brand new knives. i'm shocked that people can't grasp such a simple concept.
In Japan, at least kitchen knives from world famous makers are sold w/o any edge at all. Assumption is the owner decided what type of the edge he/she wants and either does it on his own, or uses sharpening services at the store. I mean the concept isn't that simple :) To me it's very simple that factory edge is very unlikely to be precisely what I want, and obviously it will not last forever. So, at best, it saves 1 sharpening if it is ideal... Otherwise, even if it is "sharp" (depends what one calls sharp) you'd still have to adjust to your use.

well, i've learned something here. some people like their knives to come sharp and some don't see it as important. i actually prefer that my folders don't fold because i can actually just bend the sh@ out of it when needed.

Here we go again..... exactly how sharp should the knives come... at what grit should they be sharpened, and at what angle. You tell me, then get everyone to agree and there will be a change.

Benchmade won't listen here because BM is not represented here, they have a toll free number, tell it to customer service.

I do understand that WAY too many people cannot/ refuse to sharpen their own knives for some reason. Hence the fact that they prefer sharpness out of the box. However, personally I wouldn't care if it came dull. I sharpen their out of the box anyway. I guess the only reason I would like it sharp out of the box is if I need a knife right away (lost it on a camping trip maybe? ) and new a new one that was sharp.

Again.... how sharp is sharp.... quantify!

god forbid he ran into a situation where he bought a knife (foolishly assuming it would be sharp) and it failed to do it's task at hand. im not bashing BM and i dont think he was either. the guy was expressing some disappointment... big, huge deal.

The last time I cut myself was flipping closed an 805, that thing slammed closed on my pinky. It sliced my finger open pretty well.

I like to use up the factory edge first. No sense in wasting the out of the box edge. I will use the sharpmaker and touch up though. After that, it's EP 600 grit.

When I first started buying and shooting guns, one of the most important things I learned is that you need to be able to take care of your guns. Basic maintenance including stripping and replacing minor parts is a necessary skill if you want to shoot guns on a regular basis. The ability to do a little tweaking and fine tuning is also essential to get your gun to how you you want it.

IMHO, buying and using knives is similar. There are a few things that you need to be able to do to keep your knives in good working condition, sharpening is one of them. As has been mentioned, if the OP has the necessary skills, the edge that he got, he could easily have got to where he wanted it to be and would no longer be a problem.

Again, a parallel situation. Buy a new gun and it's not up to your standards? Tweak it yourself or go to a gunsmith and have it done for you. Buy a new knife and the edge is not how you want it? Sharpen it yourself or have someone else do it. Both times it pays to know how to do it yourself.

BTW, don't go off mad because others don't agree with you. ;)

Ya know come to think of it I ve never had a Benchmade "dull" out of the box! Nice and sharp actually! No complaints! I guess if you buy a knife and you re not happy with how it comes take that up with the person or dealer you bought it from!

im certainly not mad. i've been laughing actually at how badly everyone missed the point. im over it though. i used to repair televisions a few years back so now whenever i buy one, i don't care if it actually works because i can fix it (that's my last cheesy analogy). it's absurd that some people would actually want to buy a sharp knife. ludicrous! the nerve of this guy...

It's not a big deal. If you use you're knife you'll have to sharpen it anyway. If you don't use the knife then why do you care if it's sharp?

I think the engine analogy is completely ridiculous. It's more along the lines of buying a new car and it not having a full tank of gas.

You forget most of them don't really use their knives for more than flip toys and pocket ornaments these days.... ;)
