Disappointed with Strider

So, I just received an SnG a couple days ago. Nothing ultimately wrong with it, so my problem isn't with the product itself, as much as the warranty. I just received an email back from Strider that confirms that taking it apart, carbidizing the lock-face for extra life, and even tightening the pivot will void the warranty and leave you SOL. Now, I'm not sure I can hang onto this knife. Does anyone have more info on this or any personal experience? I love the knife, but warranty is extremely important to me as well.

Before, if you screwed the pivot up it was a $25 fee. Not sure if that's changed or not.

Carbidizing makes sense because it adds to the length of the lockbar so changes lock up (at least so people say--I've never seen a difference when I do it to mine, so it's negligible I suspect), and you're supposed to fit the lock after carbidizing not before. Many companies don't like you taking the knife apart (I don't agree with it, but it's not uncommon), so that one's not extraordinary, either. Tightening the pivot voiding it, however, seems ridiculous.

Why do you feel you need to mess with the knife? I don't necessarily blame them for not wanting to cover for other peoples screw ups. They feel as though their product is 100% as is, and the customer shouldn't need to alter anything. Use the knife the way it is now and have a warranty, or give up the warranty to modify it how you want it. Striders warranty is perfectly fine in regards to backing up their product.

The knife has the best warranty in the business, you need to do nothing to it but start abusing it immediately. When/if the lock has issues they will fix it without question.

Well, I mean one of the reasons I like my Emerson is if it gets loose, I use my nail and crank it down and no harm done. I just think it's kind of ridiculous that a company at any price point would seriously refuse to fix a knife because it may have came loose and you needed to tighten it. I mean heck, companies sell pivot tools specifically to do this.

With all the lock-tite they slather on the pivot threads, the screw won't loosen.
I hate loc-tite though.

They're not going to know if you tighten the pivot if it loosens up over time. But I doubt the pivot would get loose due to them using loctite on the pivot. Mine hasn't loosened and I've owned it about a year. Stop over thinking this. USE THE KNIFE.

If I decide not to trade it, I will. I guess it just freaked me out to have my first truly high-end knife and know that nearly anything regarding maintenance has to be sent to them and that they may or may not decide I need to pay to have it fixed.

They're just trying to avoid headaches caused by people who think they can work on knives, but can't. You shouldn't have any problems with it, and if you do happen to have a problem with it, send it to the experts to handle (Strider). They're not a huge company like Kershaw or Buck. Their knives are handmade by a handful of people and warranty work can be troublesome if you're having to fix additional knives due to customers messing them up.

Good post.^
Strider folders are assembled in a certain manner. You have to know how to assemble them the right way.
USE it, is correct.

So if I DO end up adjusting the pivot, just make sure not to screw it up? :P Also, is buying a pivot tool worth the investment then or should I not even think of it?

The lockbar side of the pivot can be adjusted using a hex bit. The other side just needs something put in it to hold it from turning, but like we've said, they use loctite on the pivot and it shouldn't need adjusting.

GET the tool.
And, NEVER sell that SnG. Trust me.

I love the SnG. I really do, it's a sweet blade. I still don't know if I'll end up trading it, but I do want to like it. Maybe if I still have it and make it to Blade next year I can talk to the makers myself.

so you have issues with things that you could have found out before you bought it, I just got an SNG myself but have no desire to take it apart and make modifications. Different strokes I guess, tightening the pivot being a problem I just can't believe, they sell the tool for doing specifically that!

idk what the op is smoking but this is their official policy. i have sent in a few knives over the years that i adjusted the pivot on with no problems. i highly doubt the op statement is correct.
