disappointed with the new Reeve Umnumzaan

Anyone know which knife won the Blade Overall Knife of the Year award? It had some kind of African name, like Umnumzaan or something.
Maybe Reeve should try making something like that.

Gentlebeings...
Having just returned from the Atlanta Blade Show it was my privilege to have handled one of the first 20 prototypes of this knife. I will tell you this. I would reserve judgment on this knife until you can hold one in your hand. The ergonomics and balance of this knife are amazing. The revised pivot design is unbelievable and completely unique and built to provide a lifetime of smooth performance.

I was amazed at this knife and after holding one and inspecting the prototype I for one cannot wait to get my hands on one as soon as they go into production. It will be my EDC for sure.

This knife has incorporated perfectly everything that you have come to love about the sebenza and CRK quality but also it has made dramatic improvements in pivot, frame lock, and blade design which CRK is also known for....it is most exciting..

The overall impressions of people towards this new knife reminds me very much of the overall impressions of people towards the Sebenza--some like it and some do not.

I was expecting something much different. It did not appear to me to be that earth shattering of a design or departure from the normal Sebenza. But, it does seem to fit in the overall reeve assortment.

I cannot say that I really want one. It is nice to see the grooved handle, but there have been many people who do not like it.

Choices in knives makes it exciting. It is not the knife for everyone, but neither is the Sebenza. I am sure that they will sell as many as they can manufacture. It will no doubt be a knife worthy of the Reeve manufacturing excellence.

I notice that the people who actually handled it are overwhelmingly positive in their evaluation.

You're right, Esav. Those whom have handled the knife aren't let down by it. I might have to "expand" my thoughts on the ideal size of an EDC:D

After the Newness wears off, most will clip their Old Sebenzas back to their pockets. I've seen this with the New knife-thing, too many times.

It is nice to hear some good news about the piece. More reviews that are positive may push more nay sayers to the table. But I fear the following....

This seems to be true with just about every Sebbie owner out there. Or just about any knife owner. It is great new and exiting but when that all wears off and you some back down out of the clouds you realize that this is just not that great of an improvement. It seems there are a lot of CRK fans that are not happy with the design. The look and features are what drives people to buy different knives in the first place. Next comes feel. If either one of those steps don't work for the owner then it goes up on the Exchange or in the draw.

Exactly, I really liked it. The only thing I'm not to sold on is the glassbreaker. I like the fact there is not a huge cut-out to access the lock. The Umnumzaan felt really good in my hand. While there is no fancy patterns or inlays on the handles, Mrs. Reeve did say nothing is set in stone.

I love big beefy folders. I like my SmF, and may pick up a PT. I have a small seb regular i think. I get confused on classic vs. regular.

I was hoping this knife would be something a little more. Maybe a single piece of Ti for the frame? Maybe some G-10 for texture, a different blade steal... I dont know what exactly.

I'm not a CRK knives fanatic, but I do love good folders, so I'm not real dissapointed or upset like people over on the CRK forum. I think its a good direction for CRK to go. His knives are excellent, I dont see why people whos lives depend on them shouldn't have a great knife from them...

I'll reserve judgement until more reviews are in, because with the scarcity of hinderers and lochsa's I want a new high end tought ti frame lock...

I think that if all the clutter on the handle were removed and the blade's spine were flattened out a little bit more, the folder as a whole would be more well received. It would also for sure have more of a Reeve feel to it. All that stuff makes it look a little more tacky than it should.

I handled one. I like the textured grips very much. I asked if we would ever see such on a Sebenza and the answer was no.

Another plus - it has dual thumb studs.

If I did not already have a knife of similar size that I like a lot, I would consider one.

I don't like Reeve's knives. They might be strong and well made but kind of girly looking.
Striders look like a man's knives. I carry Emerson Commnader, sweet knife it is.
Regards,
john

you owe it to yourself to try out some darkops knives. Ultimate man knives.

LOL, CRK's are girly knives? I know I'm not the sharpest guy around, but maybe I have some unresolved issues. I've liked CRK's stuff for a long time and have never had the impression they were girly. I judge a knife based on how it works for me and the Sebenza has never let me down. As far as it being a girly knife, I think that is a really a funny statement. To each his own CRK's aren't for everyone if the Commander is your cup of tea, then great for you. Getting a Commander in a left hand version is darn close to impossible so I guess I'll just have to live with my "girly" Sebenzas. If someone thought I was carying a girly knife, I don't think I would be able to sleep!:);):p
