disappointed with the new Reeve Umnumzaan

I liked Umnumzaan till I read that it won't have the same bushing construction as Sebenza. I can't understand this decision and because of that Umnumzaan is imo closer to for example Camillus (forgot the model name - full titanium, robo asisted opening) then to Sebenza

Make that the expectations of quite a few knife users from a maker like Chris Reeve not being met.

You can't blame people not liking the design on the OP's opinion.

Nor can you say the design is just as likeable to people as the Sebenza is, based on users who have actually held the knife.

I would buy a Sebenza, based on photos and reviews. I would not buy one of these knives, however positive the reviews are. I don't like the way I look, I don't think I'm alone, and I don't think it's fair to dismiss a common sentiment by saying "oh, well they just haven't held the knife."

enderwiggin,

It was definitely not my intention to dismiss a common sentiment! I respect the position of the OP, I really do. It's just that the thread would be better titled as "disappointed with the design choices/looks/blade length/etc. of the new Reeve Umnumzaan." That would help make it more clear where the OP was coming from.

Mostly, though, as I said, it just didn't seem right that a google search on "Umnumzaan" came up with this thread in the first 10 results.

CRK deserves more respect than this, in my opinion. Just my opinion, that's all.

I think that if all the clutter on the handle were removed and the blade's spine were flattened out a little bit more, the folder as a whole would be more well received. /QUOTE]
Errrm.... Haven't you just described a Sebenza?

I've never been a big fan of the Sebenza, the design never appealed to me. I've always liked the Mnandi more, but that's more of a gents knife rather than a folder that can take a beating like the Sebenza. This new CRK design (I refuse to spell that name. It's pronounced "zoomzoom" in my head) actually appeals to me more than the Sebbies. I don't care that knives are "tactical", but for the most part, tactical looking folders have appealed to me. Maybe that who CRK is targeting with this new design. I also like the glass breaker and can't understand why anyone would think that it's "gimmicky" unless they think all glass breakers are on all folders.

Overall, this design gets a thumbsup from me

I'm just a little confused on the ball bearing detent between the lock face and the tang....

I will be honest, I didn't really care for the Umnumzaan when it first came out, but then it grew on me. I DO have an Umnumzaan, and I LOVE it. It is a big knife though. It is a very, very smooooothh knife. I AM very happy that I bought mine.

Shoot, I like the Umnum.
I get dissapointed everytime I handle a Seb!

Chris finally made a handle with some ergos and style.

A girly knife? That is pretty funny, with two tour's in Iraq and lot's of other nasty place's with my "girly" CRK knive's that have personally saved my but more time's than I care to admit! I have used my Sabenza's to clear jamed firearm's, open can's, dig hole's take the motivation out of fight's etc etc. I better get a less girly blade, like a srider? Ha! I will bet my life with any CRK masterpiece anytime! I don't care to be told I have a girly knife! Chris reeve is a true master of a bladesmith and I have never been let down by one his product's! Maybe I will ask him to make a more "tactical" black knife with broken glass inlaid in the slab's and maybe some fake blood painted on for good measure!

You had to bring up a year-old thread to tell us this?

Really had a hard time deciding between the Umnumzaan or a Sebenza. After much thoughts, I went with the Sebenza. I chose the Seb because of its simplicity. No doubting the zaan is a damn good knife, but the Seb is simpler in its construction, no need for a special tool kit to disassemble, no ceramic balls, no glassbreaker...just a simple quality blade. There's my two cents.

The Sebenza has a ceramic ball, albeit a smaller one.

That ceramic ball is just for the dedent, on the Umnumzaan it actually connects with the tang to lock the knife. This design is very unique and I believe better then the original framelock design – more on this from me later.

ZOMBIE THREAD!

Glass breakers? I like it. It's small, unobtrusive, and handy in an emergency. It also works surprisingly well. Glass breakers work because they focus a large amount of force on a tiny (pin head sized) area. Often hitting a tempered glass side window on a car with the butt of your knife isn't going to cut it. I've seen baseball bats just bounce off the windows without even a scrach. This little nub however shatters it easily.
