Disappointing D2

the1cman,

Sorry to hear about your knife! In light of where your knife blade broke (i.e. on the thumb hole portion) we can cover your knife under warranty. Please send it in and we will get you setup with a new blade. All you have to do is worry about shipping the knife to us. We got the rest!

I just dusted off my 530 for EDC use today. I've had 2 BM's with issues, one mine and one not, and both were taken care of from their end.

That said, I don't think a work knife should break from being dropped. I also only think D2 is tough in the same sense that chalk is abrasive. Yes, it is, but only if you compare it to something even less so. Accidents happen, and my biggest concern when dropping a knife is that it not end up in something it shouldn't, like my foot, not a toilet. FWIW, I also think spine whacks are perfectly valid, because I've turned in a door frame and hit the spine of my knife on the frame.

So, should you have dropped it? Probably not (lanyards are nice). Should it have broken? No. Is this really anyone's fault? I don't think so. Did BM show their typical customer service? In my experience, yes.

Not to jump on you, but you have a knife with a fairly thin blade (compared to a Hinderer or Strider) and a big hole drilled in it. It's not a coincidence that the blade cracked right through the diameter of the hole.

I'm 6'4, so when my knife falls it falls long and hard. I have a D2 Griptilian that ive probably dropped close to 100 times without any damage. It's tougher than any of my other knives. Maybe you just got a defective one?

Anyways it doesn't matter now. Benchmades amazing customer service has you covered!

The area that is broke at has significantly more metal on it than some other areas that more commonly sustain damage from a drop, regardless of the hole. Benchmade's knives are generally tough despite them usually favoring higher hardness over maximum toughness (a major advantage for the usage of a cutting tool in which edge retention is the more important trait of the two). The place that it broke I find to be unusual and I've dropped Benchmades in all of their steels on hard surfaces and never experienced anything like it. Generally, tip and edge damage was the outcome and I dare say that is pretty normal. While it does not necessarily mean something was wrong, like any other maker/steel, if there is even something tiny that is off with the steel prep or heat treatment, it can have a major affect on outcome, and these things do happen time-to-time. Also to my understanding, if the carbide distribution is less even than normal, this greatly reduces the toughness.

Benchmade's response reflects their fantastic customer service and I can almost guarantee that they are going to examine the blade closely upon replacing it to determine if anything was out of spec due to their commitment to making a fantastic product.

Update on the Knife. So far all the Costumer service reps have been nothing but nice Here's what sucks I cant get my knife back because they no longer have parts for it which for me sounds odd. They have offered me a replacement option

The model with the multi-color G10 is a really nice knife, and pretty similar in form factor. I'm also a much bigger fan of S30V than I am D2. S30V is a very tough steel.

You're getting a nice upgrade. Go with the contoured G-10. You lose the hole & D2 and gain thumbstuds & S30V.

This is what I like about Benchmade, and why my little Bencmade family is growing. :)

I have that exact knife with the G10 scales. Trust me, it is very nice. In fact, it is my latest EDC, and in my pocket right now.
Mine is one of the limited production series, number 179 of 250. :)
My favorite knife companies of all time are; SCHRADE U.S.A. but their doors are now closed, ESEE knives, and of course Benchmade. I am tempted to try Spyderco also one of these days.

You should have got an Adamas. I haven't had any problems with D2 on any knife. This is why i don't buy many knife with opening holes. I believe it causes a weak point in the blade and in constant fear while using them cause picture the exact thing that happened to your knife happening. I highy doubt that happened from just a fall though but maybe. But buying a D2 knife you expect it to be able to handle almost anything which it didn't so i wouldn't be happy either. Try a 275 or 810. You won't be disappointed.

Yep. Like an idiot didn't wear gloves when cutting down a tree with a 3.80" blade. Knuckles took a couple hits. Was still descently sharp after finishing .
