Discovery Channel has fired Cody Lundin

Maybe the safety issues were about stuff like "hey guys, let's see you repel down this cliff with a rope made of your underwear, instead of just walking around it... or wade across this half-frozen river instead of simply following it". Heaven forbid just staying put... *shrug*

I'd probably enjoy that too, at least for a couple episodes. The problem is, it would be terribly boring to most viewers. Two guys who mostly agree on how to solve problems? The manufactured drama and conflict between personalities is the only thing keeping these shows on the air. Let's face it, you can only watch a guy start a fire and boil water under a debris shelter so many times before the thrill wears off ;)

Well, actually... he already did.

That never gets old. LOL!

He is such a weird dude but he has this peaceful, trustworthy way of presenting himself that I found him ultra likeable. It was the absolute opposite with Joe, he was unwatchable imo and I don't think I made it through two entire episodes once he was in place.

I too am super curious about the specifics with this.

Ha great video. Notice how he says this is "just a lesson and he would never ever recommend someone doing this". What he really meant to say is that He never ever recommends this, unless you have network producers who write your paychecks hounding you. Did anyone see the one where he was cut and Cody Lundin used leaf cutter ant heads to close the wound? I'd have to say its better than using gunpowder.

I could think of worse places to cut yourself and burn with gunpowder though. I bet seeing a cut cauterized like that makes averageiowaguy cringe with his surgical background.

Gotta love the disclaimer at the beginning...

...Dave and Cody receive support when they are in potentially life threatening situations, as required by health and safety regulations...

Where in the H&S regs does it say, "Go ahead, cut yourself on purpose for no good reason and pour gunpowder into the wound"?

:D

I too am super curious about the specifics with this.

Ratings are slipping? He wanted more money and the network told him to go take a hike? He got bored and/or tired of the BS? Who really cares? I mean really.

It wasn't that long ago that Stroud "retired", saying he was just to old to spend that much time sleeping on the cold hard ground anymore. Suddenly there's a whole new series, with even longer trips (10 days instead of seven, I think). I'm sure that had nothing to do with somebody waving money under his nose.

(not that there's anything wrong with that... more power to 'em)

I propose that Cody Lundin and Bear Grylls get together and make a new show about cooking in the outdoors/survival situation. They can feature lots of British cuisine as a nod to Bear. Working title? Lundin Grylls.

Have Dave build a huge bonfire. Throw Teti, Grylls, Cody, & Strouds DVD compilations in it and call it Lundin Broil. If the test audience likes it then Discovery can make Mora network logo'd Gerber rat tailed survival knives, you know bring em back. They could put two in a blister pack and call it Dual Revival.

I love this thread, I'm proud I renewed my subscription to BladeForums today... almost as entertaining as the TV survival shows.

With all duel respect, the show was about survival situations, so some things are not always going to be safe or healthy. Disclaimer "do not try this at home!" Just don't be foolish and take unnecessary risks. I always felt that Bear was for entertainment by doing things no one else would recommend in a desperate situation. Les was at least doing his own filming. I would like to see Cody do his own show his own way, out in the desert, if not TV then on YouTube or on line. Maybe I have not looked too hard yet. I know it was Cody's style, but I always said, put some shoes on. I wish him well.

Since we have here Kyle aka averageiowaguy, or any other knowledgeable people I have a question: cauterizing a wound with gunpowder has even been referenced in any medical manuals even 200 year ago?
I am curious as if this nothing more than a legend.
Thanks guys

Doesn't surprise me, each season Discovery channel drops to a lower level of viewing quality. Most of their reality shows are too confusing and painful to watch. Cody should develop his own show.

Don't really care. The show was so dramatized, I quit watching. Wanting Cody to work with Mick Dodge is an insult. Mick Dodge is not a local legend, and anybody selling mealworms as maggots from a carcass in the NW, on national tv should be debunked on that alone. Can't stand that farce.

I'm glad I am not the only one who caught that. I called BS on that as soon as I saw it. When I was a kid I had some lizards we would feed meal worms to. Easy to distinguish to most people I think who have seen either. I've never seen Maggots that huge and brown. If anyone has please chime in. People who are in to insects as food put those on pizza. There was one point where he sees real maggots on some kind of fecal matter he finds. I think he didn't eat those and just palmed them. On the next episode he is sick with some stomach virus/ Diarrhea. Maybe its cause you try to eat maggots off of dead beavers?

Yet another show trying to entertain by eating weird stuff or drinking pee. I also say the encounters are BS on Mick Dodge as well. But we have already talked about network producers, entertainment, and money in this thread.

Joe Real, I personally have never seen an actual reference to using gunpowder to seal a wound. All of the cautery I've seen in old texts has been with a hot iron, or in the case of an amputation, sealing the wound with pitch. (which was probably fatal anyway, funny they never mention that)

Here is what I think:
Black powder contains three things as we know, charcoal(carbon) saltpeter, and sulfur. I would bet money that if you put old style black powder in a wound it would help it clot. No fire necessary. Modern smokeless double-base powder wouldn't work as well as nitro-glycerine is a vaso-dilator, so it could make bleeding worse. and now you have nasty stuff in the cut. I think that maybe where the myth came from. Its only a guess.
Cauterizing wounds outside of surgery is a terrible idea pretty much all the time.

As for discovery and all that I find it interesting that the rumor from folks who are related to discovery are not happy with the "edu-tainment" that discovery itself has been producing. You look at shows like mythbusters and survivorman, dirty jobs, and the guys that run them have full creative control. There has been a change in several networks (discovery, history, AE, TLC) to go for the ratings not the content. But the backlash is hurting them. They are having trouble getting content from independent creators, so they mill out their own (with no budgets, overworked staff). A few shows are carrying the chaff, and honestly the power of the internet means most of those shows could walk away as soon as contracts run out. But the argument is that its "reality TV" no reasonable person expects it to be factual.
Pick the shows you like, support the content creators you like, and screw the rest. Every TV comes with an off button.

got this off of wiki

Many chemical reactions can destroy tissue and some are used routinely in medicine, most commonly for the removal of small skin lesions (i.e., warts or necrotized tissue) or hemostasis. The disadvantages are that chemicals can leach into areas where cauterization was not intended. For this reason, laser and electrical methods are preferable, where practical. Some cauterizing agents are:
Silver nitrate: Active ingredient of the lunar caustic, a stick that traditionally looks like a large match. It is dipped into water and pressed onto the lesion to be cauterized for a few moments.
Trichloroacetic acid
Cantharidin: An extract of the blister beetle that causes epidermal necrosis and blistering; used to treat warts.

I've had doctors do this to me more than once, (couldn't stitch because of swelling from bone being struck) hurt like hell. It did heal up nicely tho, minimal scarring. Per the doc, that pain will take up to a few weeks off of the healing time.

The first time it was done that seemed like a good idea, the second time, not so much.

a lot of plastic surgeons use the stuff too, to reduce scarring.

To be honest the flaming arm was bad however DC using his BHK Pathfinder knife, duct tape and tarp to get honey from killer bees was more foolishly dangerous. Cody's speech says it all. On a side note both stunts were probably not dreamed up by either Cody or DC.

Safety issues.... well, you never know right? I think it is all about money.

The show has run its course. As Terrio said, how many times do you need to see someone build a fire? Lundin was a master primative fire starter. I'll give him that. Just about everything else about the guy turns me off. Canterbury and Lundin were the best team regardless of Dave's ethics issue as far as Dual Survival goes.

I suspect those rope trips (probably un-necessary) down the face of a cliff or a glacier did him in. I think Lundin is pretty much afraid of heights. You wouldn't get me doing that stuff unless I HAD TO to save my life. More than likely I would just shorten my life if I tried a stunt like that. Can you imagine lugging around a couple hundred feet of climbing rope just in the off chance you might just have to climb down a cliff?

When it is all said and done, I like Gryllis the best because with him at least you understand it is all about entertainment.

I think it was long over due. I was never sure the guy could have survived his way out of a wet paper bag. Dave on the other hand would live like a king forever darn near any place you put him. I still watch his YouTube stuff from time to time and it pretty much covers everything. I think if they gave Dave his own show it would be a pretty big hit. I'd watch survivor man and Bear again too. At least you could learn something from time to time watching those shows and they had different point of views on how to survive. Cody pretty much just acted more like a girl that most girls do. He depended on Dave to get him out of whatever they got into.
