discussing Strider?

Just because you do not share his opinion does not mean he's not entitled to it.-------------------

Sir, my edited post at 7:57pm did establish that I believe in his right to state his opinion. Certainly, my earliest post did leave that out.

But, why do we continue to "review" personalities instead of products? I read positively glowing reports about the latest production offerings from the Republic of China...which country MAY NOT necessarily have our best interests at heart.
I cannot support that type of double-thinking.
Nevertheless, I like all of you guys. We ALL appreciate nice knives.

Strider makes an excellent knife...always has, I own several.

Josh is a great guy and they have always taken care of any issues I have had.

I once was waiting for a folder to be returned and when it arrived I opened the package and there was a badass fixed blade inside...I called Josh and told him he said they made a mistake and that knife was to go to a soldier being deployed and if I could ship it back overnite....I said give me the mans Addy and I will overnite it to him...Josh sent me a label and I shipped it...Josh called me back the next day and asked what he could do and I told him I had been after a recurve SMF...they ground me one and it showed up in a couple days, no charge.

I dunno, I never had any issues contacting Mick, Duane or Josh when I needed to over the years.

And I'm just reflecting what I've seen and read here on BF and a few other comparable boards I frequent. I myself, have zero experience with Strider, mainly because they're "shady characters". :D

Clearly, I'm missing out on some cool knives, and as a knife knut, I know I would really enjoy a Strider (especially an SNG CC). That said, if I waffle on my principles simply because I want it, then I'm only letting myself down. It's a choice I make, and I don't look at people who buy and support them any differently than those that don't, as it's their own personal choice to make as well. I've said this before here, everyone makes mistakes, I'm nowhere near perfect, so I don't expect anyone else to be either. It's not a grudge I hold against Strider, but rather an integrity and character standard I hold myself accountable for. They made their choice, and I subsequently made mine. I wish Mick and Duane, their families, and their company all the best, but my money will continue to go elsewhere.

Maybe one day I'll see things differently, who knows.

And it's testimonies like this that will in fact change my mind. Good on you, and them.

Thanks for sharing that.

Because when you buy the "product", you support the "person". So, to some people, personalities matter too. But no worries, us Central Floridians need to stick together anyway.

I held out for an SMF in the configuration I wanted. The knife is actually superb for my requirements. My go to knife. IMHO an outstanding blade.

I personally have owned several Strider knives. Every single one was great for their intended role. I can and will only speak from my personal experience. For a hard use, beat the snot out of folder, in great steel choices, Striders are top notch. I have a SMF in stonewash, with a CPM-154 blade that is all day one of my favorites. Out of the box the edge was too thick (obtuse). I spent about an hour on my WE and took it to a 20 dps edge. Now it is one of my top 3-4 Mid-Techs. I can't speak for Mick, I don't personally know him. I can speak for Duane, as I met him. He came across as a straight guy. I liked him, and he was very cordial.

As far as the knives: don't have one bad thing to say. I have liked them all. I would have to be in a BAD way to sell my current SMF. I mean it. There would be Millies, and Benchmades, and dare I say.....my Shirogorov would go first. Strider uses top end steel, and the HT is spot on for whichever one they use.

That is MY Strider discussion. As usual, YMMV.

Cheers

Your willingness to sell your Shirogorov before your SMF is indeed quite a statement. I am also fortunate to have a new-in-Baggie SMF in DGG and cpm154. It is a marvel of engineering prowess, IMO.

I respect your principles, just to be clear when I got into Strider knives I knew nothing about the person... I bought the knife, I have always tried to ignore the marketing and look at the tool.

That being said, I have had dealings with Mick and he has always went above and beyond to help me and he sent his condolences when my father passed 5 years ago.

At the end of the day their just knives and we all bleed red.

How could one not like this.

Nobody seems to share experiences like yours, and they bring a completely different perspective to the Strider personalities. Knife makers should always go above and beyond to help you, that's standard customer service, but contacting you about the loss of your father is a true reflection of character. Your two examples have given me reason to look around again, as it's been awhile, and reconsider Strider.

This should also help the OP quite a bit.

Again, thank you for sharing, I really appreciate it.

I traded for an SNG DGG recently and have been very pleased with the knife. Beautiful design and much lighter than I expected. Would be nice to see a thread about the knives only.

I struggled on whether or not to buy a Strider after reading all of the negative stuff. But if former Navy SEALs can forgive his past and work with him, then that's good enough for me. I finally broke down and bought a SNG, it's a great knife, so much so I bought another one in GG version. The fit and finish is not CRK, but then again not many are. But both mine are well made, lock up good and don't have any play. I really like the ergos and blade shape. They do take a while to answer emails though, but I finally did get a response. Just my 2 cents.

You have the perfect username. The absolute center of the target. If only more folks felt that way, wouldn't it be a great thing!

The SNG and SMF in hard use, high wear steels like Cruwear, PD#1, and Z wear really live up to the toughness of the design itself. These steels are used as upgrades to D2 in both wear resistance and toughness. Though not as wear resistant as some steels the toughness ( almost near 3V level with a little better wear) of these blades IMO are the balance that was missing in such a tough knife design. Just look at the size and strength of the pivot to see what I mean.

I read about QC problems but myself I have never had troubles. Every blade I bought from Strider starting from the 3V release has been perfect alignment, no lock rock, no finish issues. Not at all what I was expecting due to the complaints here on BF. In fact 2 SMF's and 3 SNG's over the years have actually been perfect.

All of my Striders have been absolutely flawless except one DB fixed blade that had wacky grinds, which they are completely replacing for me. Communication is the only thing they could improve but it's still decent. My striders have been the best knives I've ever owned or used. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1403790704.217651.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1403790717.399635.jpg flawless fit and finish, glass smooth, and the SMFs feel like a fixed blade, no BS.

I love my Strider knives(SMF & SNG). Overbuilt as bricks and ready for hard use, I have nothing but good to say about them.Personally I just stay away from the drama involved with Strider and enjoy the knives. I love BF because like most of us here we love collecting and talking knives, knives and more knives. I really don't care about the never ending controversy. To me it's just about the knives, and he makes a great knife. I'm not a FAN of Strider anymore than I'm a fan of many top Mid-tech's.(CR,Hinderer,Ect).All great knives, all with their own appeal. I will say if I had to pick one folder to carry for an extreme hard use survival situation, I would be the SMF.
