discussing Strider?

After hearing so much bad about them here, I was mildly shocked the one I received was so flawless.

I agree Jill almost didn't buy one after what I had been reading here but I have to say I am very happy that I did.

This site demonizes Striders horribly. They are the best knives I've handled. I tried to go back to my Emerson's and ZTs but they get booted out of my pocket in an hour and a strider goes back into it. I will say I hate stolen valor more than almost anything, it took me a while to get past that. Mick is a stand up guy though and has spoken to me very respectfully and like he was my friend on USN and they have a great warranty. I most certainly cannot say that about other manufactures... My last experience with a certain somebody was a joke.

Why? Because some cannot get past stolen valor? That's not demonizing, that's an opinion. Sorry. Calling it demonizing is like calling someone who disagrees with you a "hater."

No doubt the fans of the "certain somebody" would consider you a demonizing hater.

Some very positive information and personal experiences being shared here, and the civility is mind blowing, to this point.

I think I might go shop for a SNG CC right now.

I prefer the DGG better, due to the immense grippiness.
It is a tad hard on pockets, but not as bad as, say, Cold Steel Or Emerson's G-10 when new.

I bought the SnG first and held my breath as I opened the shipping box. I expected a banged up POS, but the F&F was the opposite of what most said , so I bought the other two.
The AR is actually an older production knife and it was perfect too.

Posting in every single Strider thread on why you don't like Mick may qualify you as a "hater" and not just having a different opinion.

@ JillJackson; that is is EXACT one I have. That knife is flawless. I love it.

This thread caused me to literally take out my XM-24 and my SMF and lay them side by side. I looked them over, flipped them, talked lovingly, caressing them....oh wait, I got off topic. Seriously though, I had my wife pick her favorite, she couldn't either. The SMF is that good. Mrs. Vegas Blade knows quite a bit about knives. She can discuss vanadium content with most. :) Point is, the knife is great, and in it's size and weight class, it can hold its own with many.

BTW, across the board, this has been a darn civil discussion of a touchy subject. Thanks to those who have contributed.

Well, that's not really fair, is it? You forgive them for stolen valor but everyone else who doesn't is demonizing them? The fact is, they lied about their military experience to promote their company. They're now successful and most likely pretty wealthy because of it, so I guess it paid off for them. So far, this thread has shown proof that they're more human and humble then they once were, I hope it continues.

And they should really rethink a few statements on their website... Taken directly from the Stirder Knives Faqs page in regards to military discounts... "Liars and cheaters will be hunted". So, it's OK for them to lie about their military experience for monetary gain, but if you do it to get a discount on one of their knives (monetary gain), then you will be hunted because of it. :thumbdn:

And that "certain somebody" issued you a personal PUBLIC apology, which was the stand up thing to do, but not often seen. Case in point, Strider who offended and betrayed way more than one person, but not so much as a peep out of them.

By that philosophy, posting in every Strider thread about how pleased you are with your Strider knives makes you a "fanboy", and I disagree on both accounts.

I know the feeling of "the character of the producer affects my appreciation of the product". (I can't watch Tom Cruise movies because I don't like Tom Cruise -- despite never meeting him or having personal contact with him in any way.)

But my reaction is contingent on there being something still ongoing that I don't like. If knifemaker is a convicted murderer, but has paid his debt to society and now makes quality knives, the past bad acts of the knifemaker would have no effect on my feelings about the knives -- even though that past bad act was very bad indeed. If the knifemaker is currently -- say -- a horrible racist, a serial wife-beater, an active neo-Nazi, those ongoing bad acts would have a direct effect on my feelings about the knives. My economic support of someone who did something bad in the past is fine with me; my economic support of someone who keeps doing bad stuff equates to my supporting that bad stuff, and is not OK with me.

My understanding of the Strider "bad stuff" situation (not issues about the quality of the knives) is that it happened in the past (and pretty distant at that), and there are no ongoing similar bad actions. If that is the situation, is economic forgiveness wrong?

Precisely. People ask about Strider, and you are going to get opinions. Nobody says once the fans come into the thread it devolves. The only ones saying that seem to be the fans, when the nonfans enter. Then the nonfans are called demonizing or haters. That's when it devolves.

I'm sure there is a Strider-moderated Strider forum out there where Strider fans can discuss how much they like the knives and their maker without fear of people having a differering opinion show up. That's absolutely fine. That's how those forums work. It's just that the General Knife Discussion Forum here ain't that place.

Sorry.

Some people are capable of looking at both sides of an issue. Some aren't. Some don't care about said issue. If you chase down every Strider/CRK/ZT/Microtech thread to stomp out any criticisms and only praise the product, you might be a fanboy. On the nother hand, if you chase down every Strider/ZT/CRK/Microtech thread only to take a dump, you may be a hater. That's just the way I look at it.

I assume you have an opinion, but do NOT assume that I share it.
I have owned many Striders; all were great. I've owned and enjoyed at least twenty in four different models: SMF, Sng, PT's and SJ-75's. Their customer service is superb...even though emails are not responded to as quickly as we seem appropriate. I have had trashed knives re-bladed and made as new and returned to me for no cost.
John, this is a KNIFE forum...NOT a personal grievance arena. I realize that you are new here and welcome to post YOUR ideas. But, Whine & Cheese forum would love you. No flames, sir, but please leave the personal attacks out of the discussion.
sonnydaze

Actually I don't have really any strong opinion on the brand at all, I have never owned one and don't plan to but no "personal grievance" at all. I'm not a big fan of the styling, but I don't think there is anything "wrong" with them.

The founder's shady past is a well known fact though, the questionable military record and the definitely not questionable criminal past (he served fed time for an armed carjacking).
