Dive Watches

I've have a few vostoks amphibians. including. the scuba dude one like yours. one quit working and then started again. couldn't get it to run. so put it in a drawer and it sat for couple years...pulled it out to toss it. as i was walking to the trash can it started running again. still runs to this day.

these are low cost mechanicals, built more to wear for 10 years and then toss when they finally die......nothing wrong with servicing or replacing the movement if ya want to.....except the cost of the work will be more than a new watch costs.

I would have been thrilled if this thing lasted 3 years or more. Guess these are basically disposable items when factoring in potential repair costs. Sort of like finding someone to repair a VCR. Maybe I’ll try sticking it in a drawer for a year or so.

some run well for a long time, some dont. some have tight bezels..some have loose ones. some have decent wr, some don't. their qc is all over the map..but a good one isn't a bad watch and the movement is typically pretty durable. the qc just isn't there on these..but the cost reflects this......

yeah I know that sounds stupid and impossible but that's what happened. I was smacking it, tapping it hard on a hard surface to see if some debris was stuck.....winding it doing everything to get it to run. wouldn't. tossed it in a drawer. least a year maybe 2 was cleaning out some junk from that drawer decided it was time to toss it. started running. doubt it would ever happen again.

That reminds me of an old Dell mp3 player I had years ago. It was heavy and big, about the size of a pack of cigarettes and was using a hard drive method for storage. One day it stopped working and I was going to toss it. But I figured since it was a goner anyway I would first try to smack it hard on a table a few times, using the old (if it doesn’t work, whack it with a hammer) technique. It fired back up and worked again.

yep. too bad that method doesn't always work......

Well since this is the dive watch forum let me tell a story related to dive watches.

I wanted a certain model from a microbrand. I found one on ebay and bought it for initial listing price. When I opened the package it was running very fast, like 5 seconds per minute fast. I contacted the seller, got a refund and sent it back. I did some research and found that this can happen if the watch gets jarred and the coils of the hairspring overlap. When the seller got the watch back he found that it was running fast so he did the "smack it" trick and it started running properly. So he listed it on ebay again and I bought it again, this time I had to pay more to beat some other bidders. I got it and it is running at the correct speed. I have a bit of trouble with power reserve which could be me or could be the watch, I haven't determined yet. The watch has a Seiko movement and I have this problem with some Seiko movements. When I re-bought it I assumed that I might have to replace the movement and I would do that if necessary. The watch is in my rotation and the next time it comes up I'll watch how it is running.

I've only had this one a couple of months and haven't gotten around to getting a good photo of it but eventually I will.

Got this before my wedding in 2008. It's a Luminox 8100 series. Wore it daily for a number of years before I put it away. I have been thinking about replacing it, but I rarely wear one because I am an electrician. I would love to just get a swiss army with the nylon band, but even those are crazy expensive these days. I belive there was a 10 year warranty on the luminous gas, but mine still glows bright in zero light.

I would recommend against a Victorinox swiss army watch. I have one that I've been trying to get fixed, but every time it comes back from warranty, there's something new wrong with it. First the date wouldn't advance, then the seconds stopped, while the minutes and hours advanced, now the chronograph won't time past 8 minutes and 20 seconds. This is a three year old watch that's still covered by warranty, but their warranty department has not been able to fix it.

If you want something low cost and reliable, go for a Citizen Eco-drive model, or a Timex. You'll get a whole much more value for your money, and I've never had issues with any of mine.

Marianna Trench tested, probably the ultimate dive watch but too big for me. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic.

My daily wear sub has been in the salt water pool at the fitness center probably 1000 times. Clasp was so gunked up with residue it wouldn't adjust and had to use a toothbrush to free it up.

another Fugu for the thread. NY0156-04E this one I call the Fitzroyce Fugu. from the film jaws3. the character Fitzroyce didn't wear a citizen diver. rather a seiko quartz diver. likely a 7548 model. so its not due to that. it's the color of the bezel that reminds me of his wetsuit choice....
