So, earlier today i was at Starbucks enjoying my coffee and i decided to take out my new 25 to admire and look at. As i opened it i noticed a guy across the room on a laptop with his eyes wide open. As soon as i looked, he looked back at his screen. Then a few minutes later, there he went again with that strange look.

Do you guys ever have this happen to you when you fondle your knives???

A coworker pulled out his SOG Flash 2 to show me at work tonight, so I, in turn, showed him my Small Sebenza 21. Which he didnt like and told me it was cheap......I know. But another co-worker, standing a few feet away, stated "I didnt think we were supposed to bring weapons to work." I advised him that it wasnt a weapon, it was a tool. He sarcastically replied, "you're my hero."

I don't really fondle any of my knives in public. If I do, it's kinda descretely. I don't like people seeing what I have on me or whatnot....!!!

Medic- exactly, it's a tool. I dont know how many times I've been asked why i need to carry a knife with me "are you going to kill someone?" Also, if a sebenza looks cheap next to a flash, then something is wrong

Nyefmaker- i couldn't resist it. Its my first sebenza and i absolutely love it

The Sebenza doesnt actually look cheap. Its a real sebenza, perfect in every way. But he couldnt flick it open very easily, and it didnt have "cool serrations" like his flash which was assisted opening. So to him, it wasnt any good. Made me giggle a little.

I don't have a sebenza myself quite yet, but will be getting one soon hopefully. In any case I always laugh to myself when the "tough" guys like to pull out there tacticool knives with all the serrations in all black and say that their knife is much better. Heck I started out with SOGs, but I sure learned better.

As for being around the general public, it's probably not a good idea to pull out your knife and have it seen openly. Most city and urban folk are scared of knives and will think you're trying to stab them.

Best Practice. I don't let people know I'm carrying a gun for just this purpose. Keep em guessing so I am not the first target. I saw a douche bag walking around with his Springfield XD in town this weekend in a hip holster. Cheap plastic thing, and he was paying no attention to it. Had on a "Kill em all Let God Sort em out" type of T-shirt. At least when the lead starts flying he will make a great diversion for me. I just don't like his type being front and center in the debate as our "Poster Boy".

You should look them dead in the eye and say, "If I were planning to kill someone, YOU would never see it coming."

Spot on! It is a tool, and like all tools if used recklessly it can harm people. If used with skill and practice it can do wonderful work.

when going out for food I order steaks. they come with the worst knifes so I pull out my leek and use that instead.
Agreed, I always use my own knife. Sometimes I get odd looks from the wait staff, but screw em.

Maybe you should bedazzle it and anodize the whole thing gold :)

If you are fondling, as opposed to using, a knife in public? Then yes, you do.

And if you are grinning and whispering endearments to your precious, you oughta be put away! :D

Agree, public fiddling is asking for trouble. Frankly, if I saw this happening at a Starbucks, I'd be out the door faster than steam out of the barista's nozzle.

fiddling/fondling, especially when alone - not just using the knife, yes. That would appear a little sketchy. Pretty much doesn't matter what knife or how the person is dressed.

Other tools (especially those can act as weapons) are the same way. Someone lovingly admiring a hammer, or a pistol would also appear sketchy, regardless of their intentions.

The thread title reminded me of a classic David Firth animation (not Stanley). You will have to look for that one your selves as I'm not posting it here. It's a bit sweary. :p

I have a dinner most Saturdays with my knife friends here in Taiwan. We know the owner of the restaurant and he knows us well and what we are like. I have seen peoples skin nearly fall off and their teeth crumble when they see a 12 inch bowie or nice 7 inch fighter being passed around the table so my little CRKs are hardley even noticed. :D
I personally think people should be exposed to responsible knife owners as regularly as possible. We are not bad guys, we come from all walks of life and are frankly exactly the sort of people that should be promoting responsible knife ownership and use to "Joe public". Why is checking out a new, legaly carried 25 in a coffee shop any worse than looking at a new phone, watch, pen or anything else ?

I pulled my folder out once in public to show a friend. I won't do it again.
Hi Haze.

Im with Nyefmaker, I likely won't even use my knife in a situation that calls for it, if I'm in a very public place at the time. Then again, I live in Totalitarian NYC. How I miss the West Coast...
