Do I look like a serial killer?

Jnewell- don't tell me you wouldn't be tempted to go talk some knives with a fellow crk owner???...... or you can run away, that's fine too

Im with Nyefmaker, I likely won't even use my knife in a situation that calls for it, if I'm in a very public place at the time. Then again, I live in Totalitarian NYC. How I miss the West Coast...

I feel your pain brother. I never been to West Cost but relocating my family to SLC UT is my life goal.
I do not think it is prudent to pull a sebie in Starbucks. If I did it here they would call in a SWAT team. LOL

I would never pull a knife out just to fondle it in a place like Starbucks.

Every man I've ever known carries a knife around here, and if you take it out to use no one would think a thing.
If you pulled one out just to fondle in a very public place I would give you an odd stare myself.

Okay, but I EDC a Flash II. I won't freak out if I lose it, It's got a blade long enough to be useful in a defensive situation, it's light, it's moderately fast. I don't have anything close to a Seb to carry, but I have carried my Al Mar auto, and all day long I was checking to make sure it was still attached to my pocket. Plus, the SOG is not pretty or otherwise fondle-worthy, so I don't have that temptation. On the other hand, when I do have the Al Mar, I'm all the time firing it, becasue, well, just because. Tell me I'm wrong.

The thread title reminded me of a classic David Firth animation (not Stanley). You will have to look for that one your selves as I'm not posting it here. It's a bit sweary. :p

I have a dinner most Saturdays with my knife friends here in Taiwan. We know the owner of the restaurant and he knows us well and what we are like. I have seen peoples skin nearly fall off and their teeth crumble when they see a 12 inch bowie or nice 7 inch fighter being passed around the table so my little CRKs are hardley even noticed. :D
I personally think people should be exposed to responsible knife owners as regularly as possible. We are not bad guys, we come from all walks of life and are frankly exactly the sort of people that should be promoting responsible knife ownership and use to "Joe public". Why is checking out a new, legaly carried 25 in a coffee shop any worse than looking at a new phone, watch, pen or anything else ?

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Where I am knives are a way of life. Which is why I choose to live here.
Good post Haze!

Its a place I feel comfortable with enough that I can just take out my knives either to fondle or to use. I think its just the kind of opinion non-knife people tend to have out of fear of being attacked by a crazy knife wielding psycho. Yes, I take out my knives in public. But I also know what its purpose is;
1. A tool to use
2. When the situation arises, then a self-defense weapon
3. Enjoyment/ pride of ownership
4. Collecting as a hobby

This type of sheplie behavior is foreign to me. I live in the South and almost every guy arou d here carries a knife, even VERY wealthy people. It's no different here than having a pen.

The OP mentioned a comment about a tool reference in regards to the knife, what happened to the right tool for the right job? I don't fondle my knives in public, in this day and age it's akin to running through the mall with a rifle in your hands, people are gonna look.

My daughter was in Manhattan yesterday when the bombs went off in Boston, my last word to get before she left with her BF for the city was, "...be aware, don't walk around in ignorant bliss, watch the people and if you see something unusual don't ignore your gut."

People are on high alert these days, even with a knife knut for a father she would be concerned and aware of she saw someone sitting alone at a table in public playing with a knife, heck I'd be concerned too.

Gettin' back to the right tool for the right job concept, when I'm out in public I carry also a more socially accepted SAK OR small slip joint so as not to raise any eyebrows, it's the responsible thing to do, I have a French Laguiole that I carry for eating out, (can't stand the serrated butter knives they give you at the restaurant), when I open it up and lay it out on my napkin next to my other silverware no one blinks an eye.

As a representative for your hobby your expected to act responsibly in public, your actions are interpreted by the general public as the norm for other people like us and as such can be the difference between your act being socially accepted or considered to be a threat.

There's another thread around here about walking in public flipping your knife, another equally irresponsible act in public IMHO.

Yes, but there is also the enjoyment side of this hobby. Just because others feel uncomfortable, I don't think I should feel self conscious to the point where I can't enjoy my knives. Yes, it may put someone on the alert, but there's no rule against opening a knife. Who's to say I wasn't going to cut a brownie or something? Here it might be more lenient than other places, we don't allow concealed carry firearms or auto knives, so there is hardly any threat from an armed attacker

Ted, this is great, I like it. If someone doesn't like the fact that you're using your knife to cut up a steak, or peel an apple, or cut some string, they can go to hell. However, if you're acting like a fool, waving your knife around in public, you deserve to get smacked in the head.

Friends and family kid around with me about my knives. When it comes to my Sebenzas and higher end stuff, do you really think I would want to ruin my expensive knives :D ;).

I would probably enjoy few things more. If my company started flicking knives in a public place, though, I'm getting off the X pretty fast.

Same here, I see knives clipped in pockets everywhere. It's a southern thang :)

A large sebenza is actually a pretty big knife, especially to non-knife people. Taking it out at a coffee shop or anywhere in public for that matter would certainly raise some eyebrows. Heck, I'm a knife nut and if I saw somebody doing what you did I'd give you a strange look too.

Just because you have it doesn't mean you need to whip it out in public. That goes for things other than knives as well. 😏

I pulled a Seb out of my purse in a coffee shop a few weeks ago to show a friend, but didn't open it. I think that made a big difference, because one guy sitting close enough to see commented on the graphics on it. I don't think he even realized it was a knife until I held it closer for him to see.
