Do I need to add a first initial to my mark?

Just leave it as is, Nick. Only thing I'd change is the maker, more grumpy, cynical, and makes hundreds or crappy knives a month

See now, you woke me up too!

Dan

nick....the one knife i ave from you is super clean and i love the crisp simple mark you have on there....i couldn't imagine it any better with your first name on it or any different mark.....i say keep it as is......ryan

Oh, and Kevin, I think the mark database is an awesome idea. I think it would be a huge undertaking, but if it had the kind of effort put into it that I know the CKCA would do... a maker's mark database would be fantastic.

I dug these up... for what it's worth :)

My original mark. It's from the one that was Nick Wheeler Winlock,WA. I just taped off all the other parts. I've since had stencils made in the same font with just the last name.

Oh,found the VERY original mark... this one was strictly from pre-forging days :)

Currently I use either the one in the beginning of this thread posted by STeven, or the one used on this damascus piece.

Add the one that Matt posted, and that's three fonts. Four total lay-outs. My entry for the database Kevin :)

I don't think you'll stick with it long enough for it to matter honestly.

I don't know if your other 8 posts are of greater value, but I sure hope so. There's nowhere to go but up from here. :jerkit:

Whoa, hey! Before this lighthearted thread became a troll problem I was being lighthearted, right guys? Nick?

For clarity, my comment above about making hundreds of crappy knives would only mean Nick there would have to stop making 'em so perfect (and infrequently). Don't want none of you mad at me :)

Back on topic, when I used to make western styles (and will do so again), I used to put my name on one side of the blade and my logo on the other. I liked the effect and could add that little extra spice without taking away from the standard on the one side. One would need a logo then, and that's a whole new sticky wicket.

Joost another suggestion.

HaHa! Dan, you know I don't take anything you say seriously ;) LMAO :D :p Just kidding buddy :D But yea, I knew you were josh'n.

So how about you post some pics on this forum of those freak'n gorgeous eastern pieces you forge out!!!

Thanks dude. Ya, I'm getting my butt back out in the shop. Been some drama around here keeping me from it, but the energy's coming back.

Really man, don't need to change anything on the mark. When you can tell who made a knife from across the room, the mark is less significant.

Dan

I think its a good idea to use a full name myself. It might not matter much now but a hundred years from now it might be cool for people to know your full name;) You should mark them "Nick Wheeler International Pimp/Knifemaker"...Ha!!

Some makers use a japanese chop(that requires research, for sure, unless you speak japanese), some makers use a symbol(Don Fogg's gold plug with cherry blossom stamp, Don Hanson's Sunfish), some makers include a certificate, or in Virgil England's case, a fob, like a keychain fob, but handmade, that is the certification for the knife...

Each maker has to decide what marks , or none to use, and each collector has to factor in how much this does or does not matter.

No one is ever going to be completely happy about this stuff, and we can talk about it forever, but in Nick's case, my original statements stand. I never liked Vince Evans' fish with the stylized "E", but people always seem to want his work...it takes all kinds.(Vince is great btw, this is not a slam on his work, just his mark)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Nick,

IMHO, I don't think you should worry about that. If you work on your own style and quality of your knives the stamp should not matter much. I agree with Steve that you should keep it simple, it shouldn't be something to distract from the knife itself.
