Do Tanto style blades really affect performance?

Sure he can. Lynn T. is well known to have stolen many of his designs.

I use the words "probably" and "introduced" to be accurate, but I believe Bob Lum was the man who introduced the Americanized tanto design, but it can't be proven, nor did Bob care about stuff like that when he was alive. Bob just made and sold knives, he didn't need to fabricate a story like Lynn T. to get more sales.

That's all still opinion and complete BS started by a few people years ago, spread by a bunch of fan boys and parrots, it was BS back then and it's still BS now and always will be BS.

It's amazing how a ton of BS can be piled up high enough and then all of a sudden it becomes gospel if enough parrots keep spreading it around.

Like I said, BS.....

I own an early CS Original 5 3/4" Tanto, bought it back in 1986, some say that was the knife that started the tanto rage in the US.
I own the same one, and it isn't just Thompson that claims it. Of course he didn't invent it, but I'm pretty sure CS were the first to make the tanto popular. This model is 30 years old now, I don't think I ever saw a tanto IRL until I saw the Cold Steel.

Nope he didn't invent it and never claimed too, it was designed for Cold Steel. :)

Hoe long ago is "a few years ago"? Bob was making tanto blades in the 1970s. Now which decade did you get your CS?

And the Japanese have been making Tantos of many different styles for over 1000 years...... ;)

What Millenium are we talking about again....

Some people really need to do their research before spreading BS or should I say parroting BS......

You don't like CS, that's fine, but spreading BS doesn't help anyone nor does spreading bad information.

Like I said, "introduced". You sure seem to have talked around yourself, did I say anything otherwise?

Sure people emulate designs, and very few designs are original, but that's different from stealing designs, creating a whole fake history about them and then selling that as fact.

traditional tantos don't have the "tanto" shape though.

Some did and do depending on the Master Japanese blade smith who made them.

A lot of tantos were nothing more than Katans that were broken so they made knives out of the blade that was left.

I've heard that, but I haven't ever seen one. anyway they were extremely rare, and the drawings I've seen don't show that the two edges have the same type of grind.

Bob Lum made a whole series of knives that he called tantos, some with traditional blade shapes, and some with a hollow grind on the main edge, and a thick saber grind at the tip for extra strength. This is the start of the "tanto's are for stabbing/have stronger tips" meme IMO. Obviously a tanto with the same type and thickness of grind on both edges won't be any stronger than a knife with a single, curved edge.

anyway, when Cold Steel started making tantos, they made them the same way, which to me indicates they were probably inspired by Lum's designs.

Quite possibly. And if not by him, then by someone else. I don't think we'll ever know who actually designed the original tanto. ;) After that, they were all inspired copies and variations on a theme.

Exactly and Lynn was (Is) a Martial Artist so i would tend to think that the Japanese type was the basis of his thoughts and that was tweaked to suit his needs.
