I know that ppl purchase folding knives for a variety of reasons. Some want a self defense tool, some want one to aid in jobs like paramedics or other rescue workers, others just like to collect them.

Ppl use alot of different products during everyday existence but I do not know if they have forums for pencils, or scissors, or underwear.

Do we all buy folding knives because they are a hobby or is there really a need for them?

If i need to open envelopes a $10 letter opener will do.
If i need to cut a $3 pair of scissors will do
If i need to cook have kitchen knives that have more useful shapes and are easier to clean
If i want it all in one package for convience a Victorinox will do
The list goes on...

In this day and age when the majority of the public gets by whole lifetimes without having to have an EDC folder do we really need them?? Or is it an "excuse" to continue a hobby?

Just my thoughts at 1:02 a.m. in the great white north :)

Well...this is kind of a dead end discussion...so I'll just put in my 2 cents.

Do we really NEED anything? Food, Shelter, Water...all neccisary for survival...Knives, like anything, are just something to make our lives easier, and im some cases, save our lives.

I mean...really..why in the HELL would you carry a letter opener, scissors, etc on you, when you could just have a knife?

Like I said, this could go on forever.

Speaking for myself..

This household contains 2 teenagers and a 4 year old, plus me and my boyfriend.

Scissors? Forget it, who knows where they are.
Steak knives? The dishwasher is always dirty.
Box cutters? If you can find one, its guaranteed to be rusty.
Screwdriver? You've got to be kidding. I think I might have seen one out back a few weeks ago. (yes I use the top of my blades for screwdrivers)

That's why I've always got something sharp clipped to my pocket.

Do you know where you ARE, man?

OK. Here's an answer:
Knives are our most basic tool and human beings, indeed, need them. Over the last 3 million years we've gotten quite good at making them. A few of us appreciate that and would like to own a few samples of what knife evolution has taught us.

I got my flame suit on. Trust me I have already braced myself for the worst :)

I dunno but out of all the people I know who know about my knife "fetish", they cannot understand my obsession. Maybe knife nuts are so used to the knife way of life but in my experience "normal" ppl really don't see a need for them

Sure they can be use and put to use but do we buy them BECAUSE we need to use them or do we buy them and then FIND uses for them?

From what I've read in my short time here it seems that people spend hundreds of dollars on knives for more than just pragmatic reasons. So if you have one pair of scissors and one letter opener you can buy a DOZEN of each and still have money left over than if you bought one decent knife.

So we all weigh the costs and find buying knives the best method, as in uses outweigh the costs? Most of us have waaay more knives than we use or even need. It seems a bit hard to believe that a "hobby" reason is not a factor...

I mean we're on here 24/7 READING about knives, talking about knives, looking at knife pics and anticipating future knives. All this in the name of utility???

Curious, first of all, you should realize that a Victorinox (or Wegner) is an EDC for many people. of course this forums is not just about utility! We love knives; that's not a crime. It's a godd thing.;)

Hobby doesn't come into effect when carrying a pocket knife for daily use. Buying dozens of them does.

Allot of your last post mentioned cost compared to letter openers or scissors. You pay for quality. Most of us here, regardless of what they say, can be classified as knife "collectors". When collecting anything, you will pay more for the rare or quality items. We are just lucky enough to collect something that can be used on a daily basis.

You also mentioned the daily Joe doesn't find a need for a folder and that it is possible that "we" make up reasons for knife use. While I am sure that most of use here find creative ways to use our EDCs at times, I don't believe this is the case. I would guess that a fairly large population of this country at least owns a folding knife. It may be a POS China model they picked up at the local flea market, or maybe the SAK for camping, but allot of folks out there own a pocket knife or two. Fact is that people who don't carry a pocket knife are incovienced here and there throughout the day because of lack of a good cutting edge. How?? Why don't you ask the people I encounter at least on a weekly basis who either ask "Does someone have a knife?" or the folks I watch struggle with something until I hand them mine.

do we really need EDC folders???

In a word, YES!

I think it has been pretty well summed up by the forumites who posted before me. There are lots of reasons to carry one, and almost NO reason not to.

I'd be lost without my EDC.

In fact, if I get out of the house in the morning, and I forget it (very rare), I turn around, and go get it.

I carry a multi tool every day as well, but I use my EDC folder so often that i simply cannot function well without it.

As far as what 'normal' people think of my EDC, and my hobby? I really don't give a damn what they think, just like they don't give a damn what I think about their hair, tatoos, earrings,(the list goes on). Each to their own. I may not approve, or understand why a guy needs an earring, and he may not understand why I need a knife. I don't care.

I have been carrying a knife of some sort since I was 10 years old, and I will not ever be without one.

A lot of us carry some extra gadgets in our pockets or on our keychains. (Check Gadgets & Gear, and the periodic "What are you carrying?" threads.)
Not everyone carries all that stuff, but often it's a good thing that somebody had it.
On my keychain I carry a Photon light and a small tape measure. I use both of them a few times a week.
I usually have a pen with me too. If I lost one item for a few days, I'd probably miss the pen and the Photon more than I'd miss my knife.

I'd also rather be able to carry my laptop with me everywhere--but I can't. But my little Co-Pilot slips on my back pocket so easily, there's no excuse not to have it there.

That is a GREAT line.

On to the original question: of course we do.

Someone on these forums once said:

"My good reason to carry a knife is that God gave me rather weak teeth and rudimentary claws in an evolutionary trade-off. The hairy- armed person who figured out how to put an edge on a suitable rock made it possible for us to be recognizably human in the first place. I wear a wristwatch whether or not I have an appointment to keep, and I carry a pen and/or pencil because I am a literate person whether or not I have a specific writing task ahead of me, and I carry a knife because I am a human and not an ape."

from http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=128979

I don't want to be one of those people using a key to "cut" open a package. I wouldn't go so far as to call people like that apes, but I'd certainly call them unprepared, maybe even sloppy.

once i've stepped into the world of knives, i have been UNABLE to leave, knives just totally fascinate me and a oggle and drool at them like i've never done before... but it really is hard to describe to someone who isn't into knives just what the big deal is

i used to make the mistake of trying, now, i just smile and say, "because i do"

hey, some people are into cars, others into fashion, others are into stamps. IMO, knives are the most practical, so i say, to hell with all the anti knife ppl out there because when there are 10 people stranded on a deserted island and there are wild boars running around and I"M the only one with the knife, who's gonna be the most loved?

you guessed it...

Just because one tool can be used to accomplish something, doesn't mean that another is useless. And just because one person does not see a need for a knife doesn't mean that there is no need for one. Not to mention that every one of those people who cannot see a need for a knife still uses one. I would be very unhappy if I had to go search for scissors every time I needed to cut something. Why carry around a pair of scissors, a letter opener, etc. when carrying a knife will do the same job?

I'd say that probably every one of us has taken out our EDC to cut something only to hear, "why do you carry a knife?" My response is usually, "for times like this when I need to cut something, dumbass."

Hello all,

I don't know about ya'll, but there is hardly a day that goes by without someone asking me to borrow either my leatherman or my knife. It's to the point that I think the folks I work with would be more shocked than I if I were ever to *gasp* forget my EDC items.

I'm not a collector of anything, really, just a user. The only knives I have that I don't use are the ones that were a mistake. I pass those along to other folks who may be able to use them. I give knives as gifts because many people I know don't know how useful knives really are until they have one that is a terrific example of form meeting function. The only other tool I can think of that I have on my person as often as a knife is a watch, one of many, and I don't glance at it nearly as much as I use my knives. 40 years ago, my Mom realized that I had a little knack and affinity for sharpening her kitchen knives, and I was delegated that task, then and now. A very fond memory, and a lifetime of pleasure. I have a need to breathe, the rest is gravy. Salude.

I agree whole heartedly with Danelle!
If I kept looking for the scissors everytime
I wanted to cut something it would take all day!
And once I had found them I would be very tempted to
attach them to my side, so I would know where they were
next time I needed them. ;)

I like Bad Guys point - buying one pocket knife for utility is ine thing, buying way mor than you can ever carry use is definitely hobby territory - not that there's anything wrong with that :D
Danelle makes a good point too, it's just so damn useful to have a letter opener/thread cutter/nail trimmer/box cutter/apple slicer/etc etc in one compact package always at hand.
Could I survive without my EDC? Sure I could try an open packages with keys or a pen or my teeth, I could snap loose threads with my teeth. In fact I could survive without a lot of things in my everay life but my life would be a lot more hassle without them (cell phone/PDA/watch). I think we are lucky our hobby has a practical application. Besides knives are cool

Well, I don't use all the stuff I carry every day, but when I need it, I sure am glad to have it.

Let's see, today I accompanied a client to a factory that was loading an order of his into a container for shipment to the USA. He used my small Sebenza to scrape off some dubious looking material in a hard to access area. He used the Arc AAA on my keychain to examine the product already loaded into the container. I used my Leatherman C2 Juice tool's small screwdriver to tighten up my sunglasses. Then I used my Sebenza to cut a couple of cigars (try doing that with a pair of scissors) and when I got back to the office I opened my mail with it.

Sure, we're not talking about earth - shaking emergencies here, but the gear I carry makes my life easier, and that's reason enough to carry it. The fact that I enjoy having a Sebenza in my pocket just makes things better.

I carry one as a tool used daily.

I carry two more daily for defense of my person.

Each has specific tasks assigned to it and each are available and up to the task when required/needed.

One makes life so much more convenient, the other two make continued living possible should they be called upon to perform their asssigned tasks.

Each of the three are chosen carefully for how they will perform their intended functions if and when they are needed.

I constantly remind others that " a little forethought goes a long way". If you haven't had the forethought to be carrying one you should be left to your own demise when you need one.

Others asking to borrow the cutters who do not have the forethought to carry one themselves should not be loaned a knife. To loan ones knives to another who needs one but never carries one only perpetuates the cycle of them becoming dependant on others for their needs.

One other mentioned that evolution gave most animals weapons on the forelegs and paws, in their mouths, on their heads [ horns ], etc. Evolution has not granted us these weapons to survive, instead we eventually developed a brain large enough to be able to create things to help us survive.

Our brains evolved to allow us to stay warm by making fire, others have fur and feathers. We also became capable of defending ourselves with sticks, sharp edges of rocks and such as we didn't have claws or fangs with which to survive.

Sharp implements with points and edges which pierce and cut like fangs and claws were developed. We learned from the animals who preyed upon us that these pointed fangs and sharp claws were deadly. We didn't have the same things to survive so we developped our own claws and fangs by creating objects which did the same thing to them and at the same time kept us from becoming preyed upon further.

It's not our fault natural evolution designed the deadliest animals to have the sharpest, stongest fangs and claws with which they would be able to survive through a natural selection process.

We don't have the speed of other animals, the strength or size of some, the claws, teeth of others. We have developed a brain with which to create things we are not as fortunate to have like other animals.

Our brains and sharpened implements designed, copied, and perfected from nature have allowed us to rule the jungle. By availing ourselves with these implements and using our brain we have dominated the animal kingdom for quite some time now.

Would you ask the lioness to give up her teeth, her claws? They are the king of the jungle because they are fast and have teeth that puncture and claws that slash. We have none of these by natural selection.

We can choose to carry them on our person however for the possible time we may need to defend ourselves or need to extricate ourselves from harms way. That could be any number of things which will affect the outcome of if we live or die.

Knives make our lives easier to accomplish certain tasks like other animals, theirs are permanently attached and consequently they have no need to "carry" them, nor do they have a choice.

We humans, on the other hand, do have choices. The ones who make a point to carry a knife which makes lifes daily chores easier and perhaps carry one with defense in mind, have forethought and are prepared far better than those who rely on others for their needs and protection.

As in all of nature, the strong survive. If you choose to be strong you will prepare accordingly. Those souls who can't see the need for carrying a knife are unprepared for events that may unfold at their feet literally. They are easily preyed upon by others animals [ even other humans ].

You are prey or you are predator in this world.

Humans developed implements based on our observations of the other animals actions and outcomes of confrontations resulting in life or death encounters.

It's in our nature to survive that man carried knives out of the caves and into the big bad world, to be a predator and not prey. It was a conscious decision and a wise one on the humans part as it turns out.

We are less prepared to survive in the jungle than other animals, yet we prevail in large part because we learned how to use objects like others in nature which were not developed in our species to the same degree.

Knives? Man has always been fascinated with the inherent power they possess and I see no need to mess with something that has been proven over the years.

Knives, love em or leave em. Don't ask to use mine if you haven't the forethought to arm yourself with one when you could have.
