do we really need EDC folders???

I carry EDC defensive blades along with the rotational snazzy custom knives - at leat two of them in addition

But I don't usually cut with my snazzy blades, only to have them around for enjoyment. When it's time to cut a box, I use a box cutter. When it's time to cut plastic ties, I use a pair of dikes, etc. etc. When I used my good knives on boxes, they wound up with tape gunk on them and it was a pain in the butt to see it on the blade the rest of the day until I was able to remove it with paint thinners.

What I do cut with my knives is benign cutting - the occasional cellophane wrapper of crackers, or string or a cigar or something like that. It's just my office lifestyle, here in the northeast, where plently of other types cutting tools are around. Producing the nice knife for the simple chore gives me pause to check it out while the deed's done.

Maybe one day I'll turn a custom into a beater, but so far I'm not inclinded to do that.

I like my knives simply because I like them.

I have very few knives that are not "users." I use my Sebenza daily and clean the tape gunk off. When I need to trim saplings I reach for a khukuri or the Battle Mistress. I have some damascus blades bought for aesthetics, and a few knives that I doubt will see much use, but I don't have any "safe queens" either. I guess it's kind of like cars. Some people have one, some trailer classics to the car shows, and others have a few in the garage and take them out on sunny Sundays. I've never owned more than one car, or a brand new car... but my '65 Mustang ragtop was driven every day when I had it!

Speaking for myself..

This household contains 2 teenagers and a 4 year old, plus me and my boyfriend.

Scissors? Forget it, who knows where they are.
Steak knives? The dishwasher is always dirty.
Box cutters? If you can find one, its guaranteed to be rusty.
Screwdriver? You've got to be kidding. I think I might have seen one out back a few weeks ago. (yes I use the top of my blades for screwdrivers)

That's why I've always got something sharp clipped to my pocket.

Hahaha - that sounds familiar, I'm the only teenager in this house, but yeah - thats how it goes.

As for what I need an EDC Folder for - have you actually carried a knife all the time for a week or two? I dont know how I could live without it for opening packages, cutting various things, etc. etc. etc.

I don't remember who wrote it, but I read it here :)
You might have read it on Highroad.com too!

quote:Remember back, if you searched a young man's pockets you'd find: A comb, a pocket knife and a handkerchief?end quote.

Yes I do remember those days of old (1950's).I still will be found with all of those items but I'm no longer the "young man".tom.

Everyday out here in Mosul I carry a Cold Steel 3 inch Voyager plain edge, a large Sebenza, a Shadow IV and a Victorinox Swisstool. I also carry a Princeton Tec II, a CMG Infinity (red lens for night vision conservation), a mini DMT(fine grit), a Bic lighter, a Fisher Space Pen and an All-Weather notebook.
Everything gets used daily and I do mean everything.
Even in garrison I carried a minimum of 2 knives as well as the pen, notebook, flashlight(the CMG Infinity), the Swisstool and a lighter.
I don't believe I have ever gone without some or all of my 'gear'.
You ask do we really need an EDC folder...I think it is our duty to carry at least one for all of the reasons given here and others not yet broached.
Not sure of your expectations from all of this but I for one have enjoyed reading the variety of responses and reasons given here.
We have a very colorful bunch here and I believe it a great honor to be counted among them.
