do we really need EDC folders???

Coming from someone who is a citizen of Canadia where they have essentially given up their right to bear arms, I can see the train of logic in this question.
Personally, I have been carrying a pocket knife since I was six years old and will always do so. I use it all the time and refuse to have to carry all the other things it replaces.
These days I don't carry a folder, however. I carry a small fixed blade in a sheath with a clip for my pocket. It fits well and is no larger than a good sized folder is open. Its weakest point is the narrowest part of the full tang rather than a pivot pin.

I've got a Micra on my keychain and a plain edge Spyderco Rescue IWB. These two little things replace scissors, staple remover, file, tweezers, box cutter, screwdrivers, bottle opener. If I happen to have my Tinker on me, add a toothpick, awl and can opener. I actually use these on a day to day basis. If I were to keep all of these items in my pockets it would be cumbersome and I'd look like a wierdo (or a least a bigger wierdo). If I left all these items in my desk there's no guarantee they wouldn't migrate to somebody else's desk. Also, I would have to go back to my desk every time I needed them. I have on occasion stuck a pair of scissors in the belt loop at the small of my back when I'm at the office. Hmmm, maybe I need a kydex sheath for 'em;) But even a good pair of scissors only goes so far. Then you need a knife. YMMV. And knives are cheap compared to the cost of restoring old cars or getting tattoos.

If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand the answer :D :D

Given the choice between carrying a letter opener, pair of scisors, box cutter, bush pruner, pin for getting splinters/thorns out of my hands and something more substantial for cutting crane straps all the time, I'd rathe just carry one folding knife of good enough quality to handle everything.

Oh, and of course they're really cool :D

"do we really need EDC folders?"

One way to find out. Leave your folder(s) at home and don't carry one for 24 hours. Track carefully how many times you reach for it, would have used it, or find yourself opening things with your teeth. :D

Last night I was watching TV and someone was talking about the complex ways in which things are packaged this days, he showed a whole bunch of cartons and boxes, blister packs, bottles, cans, etc. then he showed a whole bunch of different tools designed to open them, it seemed ridiculous that you had to have many different gadgets to open everything.

He didn´t mention that all of those things can be easily opened with a pocket knife, apparently, he didn´t even think about a knife.

I believe too many people just don´t understand what a knife is.

Hey, a rock with a sharp jagged edge would do. Maybe a couple baseball sized ones for self-defense. Ease of carry is rather low, but the price makes them a fair value proposition.

But screw it, I already have a bunch of stupid knives, I'll just hold on to a few of them. I'll replace them with sharp rocks when they wear out.

Sometimes I go three or four days without cutting anything. Sometimes it's just mundane stuff, like cutting up cardboard 12-packs so they fit better into the garbage can. When I launder my gym clothes daily (yes, I do laundry, then it's done right) I always have me EDC there to trim off loose threads, especially in terry cloth towels.

Nothing, dramatic. In a pinch, I could borrow any cutting tool. I like EDC knives as I do spare tires. Not really needed daily, but a great comfort.

 I repeat:eek:

I have an EDC toothbrush, an EDC set of keys, and I never leave the house without the EDC Chip for my shoulder.

Of course there's a need for EDC, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't use a knife for something at least once a day.

I'd be lost without my EDC.

In fact, if I get out of the house in the morning, and I forget it (very rare), I turn around, and go get it.

How can this happen? When you empty your pockets at night, doesn't you pocket knife go right next to your keys, wallet (if you carry one) and whatever else you would normally have in your jeans ( or whatever)?

I carry a Delica every day, and use it most days. It's not as pure utilitarian as carrying a Swiss Army, but it's a lot sexier.

My best friend talked a male nurse buddy of ours in to carrying a Swiss Army. He works in a big hospital, and loves his knife. He uses it to cut tubing, open packages, even tighten screws on hospital beds.

A whole lot of people don't carry flashlights or screwdrivers in their cars. I guess they have no appreciation for tools.

I can't beleive a Canadain just said that. Yes we given up most guns, yes we've given up Autos, balis and pushdaggers (well I haven't given up any... don't tell any liberal that!) I suppose alot of people can use their key and their teeth but knife nut or not, no matter how "tatical" a knife is a tool plain and simple. I use my knife EVERYDAY. So I do need it!

"A gentleman should always have a handkerchief & his pocket knife."

I don't remember who wrote it, but I read it here :)

My Father and my Uncles all had pocket knives.

I thought I was supposed to have a knife handy!

What a great question. I'd say most people don't need their EDC's. The ones that claim they use their EDC's many times a day are either 1) The minority here who are employed as tradesmen, LEO, firefighters etc or 2) people who find excuses to use their knives. i.e. people who use it to take off staples rather than using a staple remover.

I think it's just a good excuse that tjat the $200 knife you bought to collect can also be useful. :)

Nope!
Now, being full time writer and journalist I use the knife I have in my pocket much (but really much!) more frequently than I did it being in military or later, being commercial body- and security guard.

Simply I have much more correspondence to open! :D

I am sure you do. I wasn't trying to place a blanket generalization on everyone but I know if I asked 25 people I knew from work and school among my friends how often they use a knife a day, they'd probably reply rarely. And I think that is the case with most people. All the examples I have seen in "how do you use your knife" threads are from mechanics, engineers, etc.

the thing about having an edc is that when you do need to use it, it's there for you, and not so much as that we HAVE to use it often everyday

you wouldn't throw your first aid kit away because you don't see a need to use it, would you?
i figure that if i asked 500 people if they use a first aid kit each day, i doubt i'd see many replies in the positive

be prepared

You are certainly right and make a very good point. And I am sure that if you take a moment to think about it, comparing an EDC and a first aid kit might seem to be a little bit of an indirect comparison.
