I can't imagine living out in the sticks and not having a knife. As the generations before me, a knife is part of everyday living, even today most of the time my EDC is keys (for the carbon breathing horses :D) and knives, the wallet & phone go mostly not needed, not carried and unused, those are tools for town where the real rat race is.

Some of them, yes. Hunting would be pointless without something to process the animal, so I need at least one there. Also I open a lot of mail, I could rip it open but it is just easier to use a little pen knife or something to slice it open without damaging the stuff inside. I usually carry one for utility too. So yes, I need my knives.

How do you get your meat when it is still walking on hoofs without a gun?

Then how do you get your meat out of the skin and off the bones without a knife?

If you don't do it, someone is doing it in your stead.

This doesn't make sense, in the context of the post, and my response. Again, the implication was that a knife is only useful as a backup weapon. The guy said his knife was useful after all his ammo ran out; don't think one has to burn up all their bullets while hunting. So I made a joke about cutting things with a gun as a tool. Nowhere did I imply that I had an issue with guns. Nor did I express an issue with hunting.

And I'd use a bow.

I need a knife on a daily basis. A lot of activities I enjoy require a knife of some sort, from taking care of my horses to leather working. I hunt, hike, like to carve and build stuff, even on archaeological digs my knives get tons of use. I could probably do it all with a fairly simple fixed blade and a SAK or Leatherman tool, but I love having lots of toys to choose from. :D

Besides the tool aspect, in my city I sadly find it necessary to carry a knife with self defence as one of its possible uses. Gun ownership permits are available (and I've had mine ever since I was old enough), but gun carry permits are severely restricted to civilians to the point that they don't really exist. And if by some miracle you can get one, it lasts for a year. The government gets to decide if you get it or not, without any need to explain why. Since our current government is anti-gun, they reject all requests. Anyway, carrying a gun is rarely an option here. It's dangerous and although a knife wouldn't be my first choice for a weapon, it's much better than my bare fists.

Of course I need them, how else am I going to open the boxes containing more knives???
