Of course, every man needs a knife...why are we having this discussion? ;) I know I'm not the only person who was raised this way.....

 :)

I think there's certainly a reasonable argument for me not needing as many as I have, but we all know that if I'm here, I don't care about that ;)

As for whether or not I need them, I certainly think I do. I go camping at least twice a month in the summer and fall, and do a lot of wilderness training with my uncle, so my fixed blades and such are pretty essential. At work, I cut a lot of varied things from basic packaging to heavy zip ties and occasionally some leather too. I could use a utility knife I guess, but like HWF said, I was raised to always have my own tools, which includes my own knife, and to know how to maintain and use them myself, so there's a lot to be said of that.
Not to mention, I grew up on a farm in Texas, where all of the repairs and such that were done around the house and whatnot had to be done by hand, so a knife was one of the first tools I learned to use.

I guess I could get by without one if I tried, but its something I was raised on, and it wouldn't feel right not to have one one me.

I've had a knife in my pocket every day for over 50 years, whether I need it or not.

Need, maybe not. Especially not all of them ;) You can use something else off course, however it makes things often more easy and efficient. So I voted Yes :) And if I don't bring my knife with me it feels like I forgot to put on my underwear in the morning. Just for daily use like opening letters, boxes, cutting rope etc. And various things "I believe and find reasons" it could be practical ;) Although I got a good set of kitchen knives I often tend to grab my edc... When I visit friends where I stay over for dinner I'd like to have my knife with me because I often experience they have shitty and dull kitchen knives. (sorry for including food related reasons). In the outdoors (hiking/bushcraft/camping) I often like to have a knife on me and use it for building shelter, cutting or harvesting plants and food prep.

Nah, I graduated to the wonderful land of work. :)
Now I'm in the wonderful land of looking for a new job...
I may go back to the land of school yet again, perhaps college this time to see if leads to work better than university did.

If I had a redo, I'd go into the trades and head north. There's likely a tree or two to use those new cutting tools on up there.

The straight answer would be: no. I only need food, shelter, the love of my loved ones, and a dry place to sleep at night. But the emotional answer would be that yes, I need my knives.

Remember the Simpsons episode where Homer got a gun?
You can open your beer and turn off the television and lights by shooting. :D

Haha, of course you can "technically" do that. I was just poking fun at the implication that a knife is only useful as a weapon.

I remember. He got the gun at Bloodbath and Beyond.

Yes, I need a knife, but I don't NEED my knives. In theory I only need one, but which one is it? A good fixed blade is nice to have around if I ever go hunting or camping again.
The Griptilian is great for everyday, but on Sunday the church Elders may have a different view of things if that is in my pocket. The Kershaw Zing or the SAK will work great for a dress/church knife but they are a little light for much of the work I have been up to lately. I am not ready to give up my rescue knives (retired medic) and the Leatherman Wave is just to darn usefull. Then there are the blades needed for yard work and heaven forbid I ever need one for defense. I figure that about ten blades (not counting food prep) is what a person really needs.Twenty, if you are the sort of person that will loose a knife or needs a back up. So, there you have it, twenty knives is all you really need.

I wonder how many handbags my wife has. Maybe I should go count them.....

How do you cut up your food with a gun?
How do you get your meat when it is still walking on hoofs without a gun?

Then how do you get your meat out of the skin and off the bones without a knife?

If you don't do it, someone is doing it in your stead.
