I need a knife in my pocket for whittling - a favourite hobby and time filler. But now that I have one in my pocket at all times, I find I use it a lot for opening packaging and general cutting. And comes in handy in the garden.

Can't imagine not carrying one now. It makes the little inconveniences of life way easier to deal with. Especially those stupid packages that are stapled together, ugh

I would have expected higher "Yea" numbers on BladeForums.

Yea 211 79.03%
Nay 56 20.97%

Use them all the time. For example how can I open the boxes of knives or knife related items mailed to my house if not for a knife?

Yes, I need a knife in my pocket. Have for 40+ years. It's a tool, and as such, it makes life easier. Just think about how long man has been making knives. Knives predate recorded history. Since the Stone Age.

My thoughts exactly.

My answer is "No" - I do not need 'MY' knives. But I do need "A" knife. I live in the country (in the woods), I work outside a lot and do a lot of projects and often find myself needing to cut something or use my knife in some other way for a task. I also like camping, hunting and fishing. I use my knives all the time to clean trout and gut/skin deer. But truth be told, I only NEED a $20.00 Gerber or Kershaw. I have expensive knives because I enjoy them and I'm doing well enough to be able to take part in this hobby. If money were tight, expensive knives are not something I would be spending money on.

I had to cut something before, but instead of reaching into my pocket where I had two knives, I reached into the drawer and used the scissors. Right tool for the job.

Don't think I'll use scissors on the steak I'll be eating tonight. Probably won't use scissors to chop the veggies for a salad either. Not the right tool for those jobs.

Nope. Although I use scissors to cut chives when I'm in the garden. Get out some good steak knives for the steak.

Yes, I use my knives everyday. Opening mail and packages, all sorts of stuff. I may not use them "hard" but I find a knife indispensable, whether it be a one hand opener or a gentleman folder. Even though I work in an office environment, I cut the straps when cartons of paper are delivered. At home I use my CS Recon 1 as an ice pick among other things.

A steak knife is still a knife. Regardless, I just used a table knife because the steak was tender enough it almost melted in my mouth. Probably could have just used my fork. So, no, I really didn't need any knife to eat supper tonight.

I have a couple of knives that are just for abusing them at work. Grabbing them with muddy hands and stabbing them into a bag of sand or something.

Yeah, when I did machining I had a work knife in the tool chest.
An old full tang bowie I reground into a tanto.
Great for scraping rust off of stuff, cutting straps holding steel stock together, and everything else someone could possibly use a knife for in that environment. :)
After I left that line of work (hated it with a passion), the knife went off to my step-brother, where it has rotation in the "doing stuff in the woods" category...as well as getting abused as a workbench knife.

You're killing me with that steak. I had to settle for a turkey on rye for dinner.:( Steak sounds alot better.

I'll probably end up with frozen pizza, or maybe I'll get mcdonalds and hate myself for a while

I guess I don't really "need" a hammer to drive a nail, as almost any heavy, metal tool will work in a pinch.

Of course, if I'm framing a house, I'm sure as heck not gonna grab a pipe wrench with my box of nails.

Usually though, no matter how big or small the job, the proper tool is still the right choice.

Due to my numerous medical conditions, I'm on a low fat, low sugar, high sodium diet. No red meat for me except on special occasions. So you and your steak are pissing me off. I will say that my Shun 6" utility knife makes quick work of a chicken. I prefer to cook my chickens while they are still alive, preserves the flavor. Pluck em, throw them in the oven, and blast heavy metal on my surround sound so I don't hear them scream.
