I camp, hike and hunt and have a certain level of "knife need." I don't always need a knife in my 9 to 5 world but they certainly male the day go smoother.

Having been in the trades for 40+ years, living on 7 1/2 acres in the woods with a stream in my yard and trees all over to keep up on I do really need and use not just one but many knives through out the course of my day.

Even keeping with the right tool for the right job mentality I have many occasions between keeping up the trail on the property, cutting and splitting wood for the winter there's always plenty of need for the different knives I carry.

BTW, ask you folks who say they don't really need their knives, pm me and I'll arrange for you to do them to me, I'll put them all to his use, I promise... :)

Yes and everyone I know who thinks otherwise is always asking to borrow my knife or asking me to cut or open something that cannot be torn.

Oh hell no. There's a good number of knives that I've bout that I have absolutely no need or use for. I simply bought them because I wanted them. There's really only a few knives that I truly, genuinely need.

But then again this country isn't based on the concept of need.

My knives keep me sane. They are therapeutic and comforting. I will stand and flip my knives open/closed, open/closed for as long as I'm standing still. It also gives me a much-needed hobby. Customizing and sharpening seems to be the majority of time spent with my blades. I think we all "need" something to keep us occupied during down times....my knives just happen to be that something.

I don't need all I have, but everyone needs a knife.

I can't imagine anyone voting no. Some may not realize they need one, but there will be times when your teeth just won't cut it.

Agree with this 100%. Flipping my knives is like a stress ball for me. :D Plus there is not a day i don't use them. I'm sure some people just like buying them from a collecting stand point and buy the most expensive just the look at their beauty or immaculate design and although thats great i only buy knives i can use not just look at. Why buy a knife if you can't use it? Has no value to me. But I get why people just collect very expensive safe queens too. I use all the knives i have.

What I need is for no member to ever create a thread title like this ever again! What if I left the PC on and my other half saw this? She'd start in without even looking at the poll... In fact she wouldn't wanna look at the poll for at least a week. C'mon man think! :D

Is this a question of need vs want? I could naw through packages but I'd rather use a knife. Scissors in the pocket just seems dumb ;) When I write a note, I use a pen or pencil and not a piece of charcoal. I need to have a knife, I want to own many

No, not the pile that I have. I have knives and a few machetes, even tomahawks that I've used once or twice, then tossed into the heap. Part of it was lust and part of it was ignorance as to what my outdoor needs\uses truly were. Today if I had two Mora's of my choice, a wood saw, hatchet, splitting axe and a SAK or multi tool, I would likely be set for life.

"Need" is a strong word. I would certainly not die if I had to track down box cutters at work all day or suffer through using them. My use for knives, so far, has not been life or death.

...but it would be unbelievably inconvenient and far less time effective for me to not have them.

You've heard of comfort food? Knives are my comfort tool. So I need them emotionally.

You don't really *need* anything but the bottom 2 tiers.

No. I went most of my life without one. Now I have to get one more just once in a while. And there is always one on me. I just try not to let the acquisition proclivity bother me too much.

I'd love to watch you rip through a plastic heat-welded clamshell with your teeth. That would be real entertainment.

Say, 7:30?

Yeah I'm a rancher I use a knife everyday multiple times a day. Cut hay bales, trim hooves, fix fence, just all the things you use one for.

I have one or two that I sincerely need, and another 530-ish that I don't. So overwhelmingly most of mine are not needed, so I voted "Nay."

I need knives for cutting chores and would feel "lacking" if I didn't have one in my pocket all the time.

The question for me is more.... how many do I need. I can honestly say that I need probably two or three knives. I've taken to carrying a Vic multitool on my belt, a Vic SAK in my pocket and another folder in a pocket daily. I could easily get by with only one SAK and perhaps a backup if I loose or misplace it.
