You can rip, tear, smash, or stomp a lot of things to get them open / separated / sized / shaped, etc. You can hammer a nail in with a brick and remove a screw with a scissors blade. Doesn't mean that's the best way to do it. Humans have developed into tool-users. Most of the tool users have developed enough intelligence to use the right tool for the job at hand ;).

I certainly don't need ALL the knives I have, but I find a proper use almost daily for one or two knives.

Yes, my work requires that I use a knife. I don't carry pocket jewelry to be trendy or a hipster.

Used daily to larger and lesser degrees in my construction work. One of the two knives I carry opens large boxes, cuts fiberglass strapping, trims moldings, sharpens my pencils, cuts open tubes of adhesives, cuts splinters out of my fingers, slices open plastic sheet banding on materials, strips wire, and on an on.

All the stuff I normally do at the office. Couldn't get by without at least one.

I suppose I don't need them; I could rip open stuff. But its much more convenient and easier to use a knife. Sometimes its just the right tool for the job.

The best thing for cutting 550 Paracord and making feather sticks. Besides - what would I sharpen if my knives were gone.

No, I most certainly do not need my knives. That said, I don't need satellite TV, or even a TV for that matter, internet, laptops, iPhones, iPads, or 90% of everything else we have, and the multiples of them. We work hard for what we have, and the sacrifices we make doing so afford us with a certain quality of life that makes those sacrifices worthwhile. When that ratio gets skewed, as in too much work and not enough family time, everyone in the home feels the tension created by the change, and it's corrected.

We try to live in moderation, but also live it up here and there, and do it all without condemnation.

Until BFs, I just wanted one knife to accompany my CC. Ok...Maybe one for tactical and one for utility. But you have to handle them to figure out which one works best for you, because opinions only go so far(nice excuse, huh?:)).so now I have 8, which I don't NEED.

Actually the best thing for cutting 550 cord, nylon webbing, nylon tubing, and nylon rope is a heat knife (which truly isn't a knife).

Even though I don't need all my knives, I need a knife; the more of them and the more varied they are, the more I can get done with greater ease. That, and I have some pretty cool knives!

I need A knife. Having one is just so useful : Cutting fruits ; vegetables ; meat ; conducting small ( or even large ) repairs ; cutting rope ; wood carving ; gutting and skinning game ; cleaning fish ; helping out with gardening by harvesting flowers; fruits and vegetables ; cutting open packages; especially the delicate ones that can't be clumsily torn open or the hard ones that can't be opened with bare hands. And finally there's always the case of finding it useful in self defense ( Don't worry ; l am not an idiot ; l would only use it if the attacker was armed or could not be beaten bare handed . Then there is the unpredictable scenario of ever needing to cut my way out of something; like say a sear belt.
Now it is TRUE. Maybe l don't always do these things every day ; but usually l end up doing one thing or another . Besides ; there is a little something called the unpredictability factor. No one can predict the future. What if some day ; we do face a situation where we do need one ? Having one on you Will pay off. Okay ; even if it is not guaranteed to be an everyday necessity; no can deny that it is an every day convenience . Think about it . A knife is the most versatile tool around. I've personally used them as can.openers ; screwdrivers; prying tools ; batoning tools and even as a saw ; a shovel ( to help me dig ground ) and even used one to get a shard of glass out of a wound in my ankle. While there are other tools that can do all these jobs; they are each suited to that specialized task but 1 knife can do all that and probably more. That's why l always carry a folding knife with me.
That being said ; while l carry and need 1 knife ; l own several more than than one ; because l like knives in general and collect them.

If I'm completely honest with myself, i could probably manage without one. I sometimes find myself actively searching for excuses to use my knife throughout the day. But like others have said, I just feel so naked without one. The worst feeling in the world is when you really need to cut something, but today you weren't able to bring your knife. That's why I hate air travel, government buildings, etc. So yes, simply for the comfort they give me, the enjoyment I get from possessing and using high quality tools, and the few situations where I actually need them, I do in fact need my knives. After all, what is need anyway? People don't need TV, social media, etc. I actually have more practical use for a knife than those things on a daily basis.
But the most important thing to remember is that it's not about what you need. If you used that kind of logic you could justify giving up everything beyond food water and shelter. (At which point you would be back in the Stone Age and in need of a knife...... Lol)
This is America, need plays very little into our choices of what to own. I like knives, so that is what I carry every day. I might even still carry if I had nothing to use them on, but fortunately my knives are at least somewhat practical and could be considered a necessity more than many other peoples hobbies could

Yes I need my knives! and so does everybody else whether you know it or not. Knives are the oldest tool known to man, and yet they are still extremely mandatory in civilized present age. that should answer your own question. Just imagine going one week without a blade at your disposal. I mean come on man. My guess is you will be grabbing the scissors before dark on the first day.

No, I don't need all of my knives, nor do I need all of my clothes either; a couple of knives and a couple of changes of clothing is all that you really need. But, it certainly makes life more pleasant to have variety and to be able to occassionally indulge your wants.

I def need clothes. Where would I carry my knife. :p

Thumbs up for Maslow.

The quest for the perfect EDC.

We all use tools every day, at work and at home. I'm a machinist and use plenty of tools at work. Even an office worker uses hand tools (scissors, yadda).

A knife is the original tool. It will do as many, many other tools in a pinch as well as being the right tool for many jobs.

Do we need tools?
