Do I actually need my knives? Hmmmm. Do I need the art hanging on my wall? Do I need the music that is played in the background? Do I need the sports car in my garage? Probably not. But I enjoy all of them and many more items I do not need. So maybe I do need them to give me pleasure. If I can afford them and other not needed things, why should I not have them?

Don't need a knife at all. Just ordered my first quality knife(BM Rift) to be a secondary to my CCW. I'm a nurse, can't use at my job. I don't own a ranch. I don't go camping. If I use it, it will be for mundane tasks or, God forbid, SD. Usually, if I need a sharp object, it's not far away. Haven't carried a knife in a long time. With so many places becoming anti-gun lately, I wanted something to become my primary if my primary was unavailable. I know I will use it and become addicted much like my firearms, but I don't NEED a knife. I'm sure after carrying one, I will feel like I don't know how I did without before.

of a matter as to how needing them comes into play. For instance I just used my sebenza no less than 5 minutes ago to cut of tape and cloth padding off an aluminum rod so that the rod could be used in a trellis like structure. Yes the knife came in handy, but the same task could have easily been done with a old swiss army knife or utility blade. In addition such a task that demands the use of a knife does not appear frequently.

Referring to Blues Bender's post, I truly believe that the use of a knife to cut vines are faster and more efficient than that of a garden sheer. But say you only need to cut vines once every few months when they begin to grow thick. (not that I know how often Blues Bender need to use his knife, just hypothesizing) Does that warrant the need for a good quality knife--at least one of a higher monetary value?

Don't get me wrong guys. I love my knives and finding a use for them whenever applicable. This is as mentioned before a debate between need vs want and is still a highly subjective matter. To each his own...and please don't stone me to death.

No one's stoning you, man. People are answering the question with an over analysation of need vs wants. It's really he only way to answer it.

You could always go get a tool for the job. You could carry a lesser tool and sharpen it more or or enjoy it less. Thus you don't *need* it in a very basic way. You wanting to make life easier and less work and your wanting the emotional gratification of enjoying the job more are *needs* on a higher level.

As you say, going up in levels of needs things become more subjective. I personally don't think having a handy tool in your pocket would be that unusual of a need.

This. I really don't NEED knives on a day to day basis either. My first job taught me how to open up all kinds of packaging just with my hands. And if you got down and dirty, most foods you could eat with just hands too. Pineapple would be a tough one... :P

As frank said, I do not need them anymore then the other comforts of life. Nobody really does, they just make life easier! And significantly more fun!

Because opening packages directly correlates to garden work.
Many things directly correlate to needing a knife daily/often. Being in the garden is but one. Again, there's a reason man has been making and carrying small knives since long before recorded history.

Its hard to say, sometimes I could do with a Vic than a folder. Too many knives I don't need. Spyderco slipits would be good, probably that & a Vic would be all I need. love the Slipits. Gary

Not all of them, but yes, I NEED them. Farm work, my job, hunting and fishing, kitchen work, etc., etc. I really can't imagine not having at least a couple of decent knives.

I am willing to admit i own more than I need. I sat here and gave much thought to your question and can't remember the last time I went all day without using a knife for something. I'm an industrial electrician and use a knife everyday at work. Being outdoors often I always carry at least one knife and often have two. I don't carry any gear I don't need but always carry a knife.

The only time I need a knife really is for fishing which I only do about 2-3 times a year. Other than that I would get by fine without a knife in my pocket but there's not much fun in that. I like to whittle a stick when I'm bored or cut boxes for recycling instead of tearing with my hands.

I wonder if the question shouldn't be, "How much time/energy do you save by having a knife on you at home/work?".

I'm getting long in the tooth and am not as outdoorsy as I once was so having a knife while not at work is convenience usually... opening packages, etc.

I'm a machinist and having a knife in my pocket at work saves me lots of trips to my toolbox. It's a real time/energy saver.

I could see how someone working outdoors or ranging far from a toolbox or something similar all day would have a huge time/energy savings by having a pocket knife.

Apes can use tools too.

You show me an ape that can use a bottle-opener.... And I'll put on a little red dress, change my name to "Shirley," and I'll literally bend over and kiss your buttocks.

Wait a minute, we're in the ape family as well...weird!

Who says we are? A group of scientists who to this day have failed miserably to prove the Theory of Evolution? Yup, that's why it's not scientifically called the Fact of Evolution. Get enough of the population to believe in a theory, and pretty soon they think it's just an accepted fact.
