One dude decided to derail the topic by going on an anti-evolution spiel? Which hopefully has ended, because the rest of the conversation has been enjoyable to me.

I'm about to go to lunch; wonder if I'll need a knife there?
What the hell, even if not I'll use one anyway.

Just use one of your keys to saw on whatever's for lunch.
I have nothing against another's opinion or stance and that's what this thread is primarily composed of--opinions regarding the topic of this poll; however, it is necessary to find an opportunity to jab at the OP whenever you can...? You take things out of context. Of course I use knives when applicable and if it will come in handy. I voted "no" in my post as prior to my interest in knives a few years ago I managed just with nothing other than a multitool if a task demanded use of it. Addressing the topic of keys....of course I'm not going to use a key and try to cut cardboard or other thicker or tougher materials. A box is taped at the seam, yes? A key (if that's all you have on you) can easily cut the tape which is all you really need to do to open a box. Disposal is as simple as collapsing the box and putting it in the recycle bin.

Everyone has their own stance and I respect all of them. Hence why you don't see me trying to argue with every post contradicting my opinion. Now lets try to continue this thread as an enjoyable conversation.

Abso-frikin- lutely ! Aside from the fact that I'm a woodworker who uses them multiple times a day during the work week, they are used with moderate frequency other times . Also, I like them. Aside from the practical utility they provide they have infinitely more character than pure practical tools like box cutters and scissors . So... They re also fun to have !

Hey man, no harm, no foul. I suppose food can be just as tastey if ripped apart with a key as it is when sliced with a knife.

Some tape, a key won't easily cut, believe it or not. The box could be stapled together or glued in which case you'd have to rip it apart instead of neatly cutting it.

I personally got deep into knives after repeatedly slicing my fingers trying to tear open plastic blister packs on items. I don't carry scissors around with me.

Using something because it is all you have is adaptation. Using an inferior tool for the job when another is readily available is a lack of logic. Knives will always be useful, in a culture founded on using tools, unless we reach the point where every item is "easy open" and every job can be accomplished without a sharp object.

Of course. Typically for me, if I get packages it will be at home where I have scissors or things of that nature to open packages. Knives no doubt make a multitude of tasks easier. I enjoy using them whenever possible and keep em around the house. At most I probably only need a multitool. Please don't get me wrong. I'm not some illogical fool trying to pair a task with the most difficult solution on hand. I'm simply reasoning between efficiency and frequency. My point was is that I probably could do without em and be just fine for the most part, but please don't be like our fellow animal leghog who is inept at understanding anything other than his own opinion.

I think that people only need one knife, and maybe a backup. People only need one pair of shoes, one shirt, one pair of pants etc. However, need and want become blurred when thinking about what might happen if those shoes wear out, or that knife breaks. I think we start to think ahead, and then it becomes a hunt to find "the best" or "the favorite". Then again, life is short, and we all should do what we love with our money, because we can't take it with it.

Yes, one for an EDC multi-use that includes defense. However the number of knives I have, no. They are sheer pleasure.

That is the one of the most logical posts in this thread.

If your job or livelihood requires a knife (numerous examples), that's one thing, but the rest of us could probably get by without having a knife in our pocket. I still think people are confusing need with want, or are just not thinking about it in a literal fashion, as in could you survive. Then again, maybe I'm taking the OP too literally.

For me, other than using them in my hobbies (not a need, rather a want), I can't think of the last thing I used a knife for that I couldn't have done with a pair of scissors. Clearly, I love knives, if not, I'd EDC a pair of shears and spend my time on Scissorforum.com instead of here, but I'm not so irrational to think that I couldn't survive without them. The vast, vast majority of women have never owned a knife in their life, and they get along just fine, even to this day. For most people, life in the 21st century does not require a knife beyond food prep.

Then again, asking "Do you actually need your knives?" on a Bladeforum is like asking "Do you actually need to lift?" on a bodybuilding.com. People here are passionate about knives, hence the almost 80% YES vote.

If I didn't need a knife, I wouldn't carry one.

As an urban homeowner of ~35 year old house, I perform fixits on a fairly regular basis. I need to cut twine, cardboard, and gardeners tape, trim flash from plastic items, open blister packs, and other uses.

Some of my uses could be done with a pair of scissors. But I don't carry a pair of scissors, it's easier to carry a pocket knife.

I don't know. It would suck when you had to wash your one shirt and one pair of pants (and I assume your one pair of underwear and one pair of socks) and dry them, especially without the washer or dryer you don't have because you don't need them.

You can survive without a roof over your head too. Many do. I deal with them often enough. Still proper quarters are a need and not simply a want.

Need literally means something. So does want.

That's what the rest of my post entailed.

Honestly, I do not get out into the woods for dirt time, and use the big knives, as much as I would like but I will say, some knives I "need" and others I just "want to need." My wife asks me this question every single time I have or want a new knife. "Do you really need that knife?"

Two knives she has actually thanked for having when she initially asked me if I needed them.

My BK9...I never thought I would really need it outside of camping, but I will say this I use it every-time I do yard work. It has really found a place in my yard work tools. Sure I have other tools that could do the job, but they require electricity or gas and motor to run. The 9 just takes care of the task lickety-split. She has used it to and commented how awesome it is. Are there other large choppers out there that might be better? Sure there are, but I may not really need them since I have the 9er.:D

My BK24...where do I start with this little piece of awesomeness. I use it and I need it everyday. That thing cuts just about anything. The FFG has enough width to spread butter on bread like a champ too. I never use the (sorry excuse for a)knife provided at restaurants anymore...for real. My wife actually asks me for it every-time we go out to dinner to cut her stuff up too. Is it the perfect knife? No, but it does what I need it to do whenever I need it to do it.

I have many knives I just wanted, so therefore I create a need for them (being a backup for another knife is my classic excuse). Most of the time that need is superfluous...at best.:D

Yes ... I use my knifes everyday and multitools I have a leatherman 300 and I have put it through the ringer at work and as an electrician my kershaw leek has been at my side for 8 years and when I need to strip wire I count on it. As for my case trapper when I eat lunch or any food that needs cutting it is my go too so yes I use my three I carry but

I have so many that I don't use as well unfortunately
