Do you actually use your swiss army knives?

Today I used mine for the following chores:

  • Open packaging on new track lights;
  • Used Phillips for small or short chores during installation that would allow me to get by w/o using a dedicated driver;
  • Cut the strings off of two rolls of hay.

If you aren't using your SAK's you need to get out more. :)

I cannot really think of a time I thought I really wise I had a swiss army knife, I could use any heavy folder for opening a can and a really sharp knife will take the place of scissors, So do you who own them really use them much for stuff a ordinary folder couldn't do?

Also what is the best model to get? I want a balance of size and usefulness.

Opening a can with a heavy folder? Enjoy your shiny new butterknife :p - having done exactly that with a few of my folders, I know just how dull a decent edge gets after cutting the top off a steel can. Not wise when SAKs come with a tool for the purpose. With an SAK, however, you can use it as a screwdriver, a can opener, pry open paint cans with it, whatever, and still shave with the thing immediately afterward because you aren't destroying your edge or damaging the blade in the process.

I used to have a Bantam (medium sized, just blade and bottle opener), but lost it. My favourites are easily the Alox Pioneer and Farmer models - the farmer is a little bulkier because of the addition of the wood saw, but feels better during use, imho. The pioneer is slimmer and a bit easier to carry, but doesn't have the wood saw. I've used the latter as my general-use knife since I got it. Both are fantastic general use knives.

For just around town, I found the super tinker has the most useful items while still being small enough to not be noticed while in pocket, out in the woods I carry an alox pioneer/harvester. I thought the same thing about scissors, but I find them quite useful, as well as the screwdrivers, can opener, and tweezers.

I could probably live my whole life comfortably with just the Rambler on my keychain. It's a little small for cutting chicken/steak for lunch at work, so I carry a Soldier (THE swiss army knife). Most days I don't even carry a locking folder. SOOO many times, the SAK is the tool u need. Many times, it's better than a dedicated tool.

An alox vic soldier is just about the best knife I've found for EDC. Although I typically don't use the various tools everyday, when I need them I'm happy to have them. I'll still carry a heavy duty folder on occasion when I known it'll be helpful for a specific task, but day-to-day a SAK works very well.

My main personal tool set at work and around the farm is a pair of pliers and an SAK. I use the SAK more than my Iuzla/locking folder. The screwdriver and awl get the most use. After work is done, the bottle opener gets a lot of use.

I have used my SAK to take down and clean a very large number of guns also.

I have repaired countless small machinery and building issues with an SAK and a pair of pliers.

Have also used the SAK to open cans. Much better than using a knife.

I have a Super Tinker and I use every tool on it except for that funny little hook. Scissors are very nice. Screw drivers, I use the punch/borer thing, and of course the blade. Use the tweezers and the toothpick as well. I use one or other of the tools just about every day. I stay away from the ones with the corkscrew because I'd never use that but otherwise it is very handy and I wouldn't be without one.

I always have a Swiss Tool or spririt with me
as a knife I often have either one of the soldiers I own or a spartan/climber

best non scary knife around

I carry an Electricians. It has a large blade, a stripping blade, a reamer, and a screw driver/bottle opener. I don't need or want any of the other tools available.

I love my SAK's...my most two used is a swisschamp and my alox soldier (made in 1996). :)

Love SAKs. I have placed a classic on each and every set of keys in the house, excluding my wifes since she has lost two in the past 4 months. I have a Mini Champ on my personal keys and many other keychain SAKs. I can't go too many days without carrying either my Farmer or Huntsman as well. To many uses to not have one handy. I refuse to use a knife not anything than its intended purpose. Prying is left to the mini wiggy on my keys and screwdrivers are covered by either SAKs or the two on my keys. Heck I even have a pair of tweezers on my keys. So the answer to your question is YES!!! I use my Swiss Army Knives.

The little one on my keychain (don't even know the exact model, gifted) and a red Alox Farmer are pretty much my most often used knives. OK, saw and can opener don't see that much daily use but I certainly don't mind them being available. Both really good and really functional, so of course they are used. :thumbup:

Yep - I use my Huntsman all the time. I guess a regular folder could do most of the stuff I do with my SAK - once or twice.

In spite of EDCing a great deal of more sophisticated cutlery, my EDC SAK Alox Pioneer is probably my most used knife. I used it on Thursday to open a bottle of off-shore water that the waiter had brought without bringing anything to open it with. He thought it was very cool that the Pioneer appeared instantly from nowhere to open the bottle. :D I was used today to open a Priority Mail box. It's always there and always useful. Part of the reason it is always with me is that it's slim enough to fit in a back pocket without being uncomfortable when I sit down...a true pocket knife. :thumbup:

This has been my EDC combo off and on for a while now. I use the blade on the Soldier for cutting food and the canoe handles all the hard work.

The bottle opener on the Soldier is also helping me release the beer that's trapped in so many glass bottles in the fridge as we speak.

If I had to, I could get by with just the Soldier for EDC and never need another knife.

I don't even bother with a heavy duty EDC folder anymore. Just a Victorinox Farmer and Executive on most days. For most jobs, brains and creativity usually trump the prybar mentality.

I love my Victorinox Swisstool. It's a SAK on steroids. It is the most useful piece of gear I own, although I also love my Gransfors Bruks Hatchet for the woods... Today I fixed a drainage well in my saute line at work with it, and then used the pliers to bend some metal piping a few millimeters back so I could squeeze some casters into the pipe. On Thursday (yes, I went for a hike on Thanksgiving) I used it to saw through a branch and make a spear while I was on a hike in Kettle Moraine State Forest. Tools like these put a whole new meaning to Every Day Carry (EDC).

i use my Wenger Backpacker maybe not everyday but close to it, i used the can opener the other night to shave away the bolt hole on a wire terminal so i could avoid going out to the wal-mart at midnight. i used the saw last week to saw little plastic pieces out of my tackle box because a lure wouldnt fit. i use both the scredrivers more than i can remember. bottle opener is self explanitory. full serrated blade is great to me for cutting small rope and bailing twine and such. small blade is plain edge so i got both. i used the awl to make a new hole in my belt a few day ago because the old hole was tearing, the toothpick is again self explainitory... my girlfriend thinks its gross that i re-use it lol and well the tweezers... they are great for when hand rolled ciggarettes get small.
