Do you bring a folder into the wild?

Always, use it for everything except food prep and game cleaning, even use it for that sometimes. Last two deer I skinned I used a mini grip, one was a Ritter (which I used to put down the doe that had clipped a car and broke her back) and the last one I used a D2 version from Cabela's. Nice score on the D2 grip, I think your going to like it. The D2 and the slightly thicker cross section seem to hold up better whittling and other wood work better than the high grind on the Ritter. The Ritter is a slicing machine though. I usually carry one of those, or a small Sebenza. But, lately I've been using a Spyderco Millie and am really liking it. I haven't found anything it doesn't do, including things I usually use a fixed blade for, like filleting catfish. The G10 is grippy and the open construction cleans up easy for a folder. Salt 1 is my go to for anything salt water related.

Just a backup SAK in my PSK, and my Leatherman Wave. I prefer fixed blades for wilderness activities. In fact, I recently switched my EDC to a small (neck knife-sized) fixed blade, and I haven't looked back. I prefer the simplicity and durability of a full-tang fixed blade, and the lack of moving parts and recesses makes cleaning fish guts off my EDC easier.

That being said, I love folders too! But most of mine have retired from active duty.

All the best,

- Mike

I carry this S&W folder every where. This is one of the sharpest and toughest folders I have ever owned. Biggest suprise of my knife life. The thing was 6.00 at the local farm stroe I have cattied it every day for four years and have just beat the thing to death.

Always. Usually my full-size Ritter grip and my Huntsman SAK. Fixed blade is my trusty RAT-3 (hopefully soon to be RC-3 in Blaze Orange )

When in the woods I augment my normal EDC stuff (always includes a folder, current rotation between benchmade monochrome, benchmade grip, benchmade vex, spyderco pacific salt and twitch II which wouldn't be coming into the woods with me). I augment it with some sort of fixed blade as well as redundant fire and a larger first aid kit.

Always have the following on my person, especially in the woods;

The Vic Farmer has seen lots of use, the D10 is relatively new but is definitely a winner.

During my time wandering the Florida Everglades, I always carried an Uncle Henry Bear Paw, and/or a Victorinox German Army knife. Lately, it's been a Spyderco Endura and a Victorinox SwissTool.

if i got my pants on, i got my knife ( knives) on. but it seems like the young guys at work are ALWAYS trying to borrow my knife. i tell em i forgot it.

I normally carry a SAK or multi-tool. It's nice to simplify things sometimes - yesterday I went out with my Schrade Walden 2-blade folder, single barrel 12 ga., and only ONE turkey call.

I always have a SAK with saw, on my side and a Native in my pocket. When I go to the woods, I just add a fixed blade to the group, usually a Rat3 or Buck 119.

The ONLY time I don't have at least one folder with me is when I'm flying on commercial flights. Otherwise, there's likely to be an SAK and a CRK Sebenza or Umfaan with me. And, if I'm gonna be spending any amount of time outdoors, I'll also have a Leatherman SuperTool on my belt in addition to my fixed blade.

I rarely carry a fixed blade, for my type of use folders work well. By my type of use I mean normal outdoor chores while hunting, fishing, hiking, working ect. in a fairly urbanized area. Their isn't any deep wilderness here and I generally plan on going home each night.

I can't always carry a fixed blade everywhere, but you can slip a folder even in your swimming shorts:D

I too carry way too many out of habit, but knives are an essential where I do want some redundancy. Sure a fixed blade is the best option, but folders make great backups and are often more accessible.

I remember an article in a knife magazine many moons ago where the author used a Benchmade AFCK for all his "survival" camp chores including building a shelter. Definately not ideal, but doable.

Some of my favorites:
Benchmade AFCK, (HK) 14205/Snody, Large/Sm Rukus, Griptilian
Spyderco Military, Para-Mil and Manix
Ritter RSK-1 and mini
Sebenza

In addition to regular folders, I almost always have a multi-tool (Leatherman Charge or Swiss Spirit) as well as a SAK (Outrider or Farmer).

If I have pants or shorts on, I'll be carring a folder. If I have a belt, I'll be carrying a fixed blade.

I usually have a SAK somewhere in there for the tools and once in a while carry an opinel. However, I generally prefer a fixed blade and that includes a small pocket carry fixed blade model.
