Do you bring a folder into the wild?

I feel you need at least 3 knives about you in case of loss or failure:eek:

A SAK Alox Farmer goes everywhere with me,work, walks, wilds etc but I like to have a CASE Slimline Trapper or Queen Cutlery Utility with me out in the woods. Why? In addition to a SAK and a belt knife, this pattern has a long thin blade which is excellent for slicing/food prep.

Er, a Mini Grip often gets included in these forays as well, you can't resist that lock:D

I'm always carrying a Leatherman Charge TTi and Benchmade mini-grip.

I usually bring a medium sized fixed blade as well.

Always a SAK Huntsman in the pocket; a SAK Farmer in the pack.

Plus a fixed blade on the belt.

Back in the day, I carried a Buck 110 constantly.

I've never had any problems with any of the above, or any other good folder. Just remember it's not a fixed blade, and don't try to make it act like one.

SAK Huntsman. The saw is great for sawing and the back makes a good firesteel striker. The blades are great for detail work and food prep. I have a Wally World special - rough use fixed blade knife. I am going to replace it with a Buck 110. I wanted a Spyderco Native but they are sold out at all the local Wally Worlds. For heavy duty outdoor chores, I carry and use a Gerber Gator pocket ax. With the pocket ax and the SAK, I seem to have it all covered. I rarely use my fixed blade knife. I like the idea of a folder as a backup.

I just went out to the local mountains today, in fact. On my person were a Greco Explorer (full tang, 9.5" fixed blade), Leatherman Supertool 200 and RAT/Ontario folder. So, yep, I always have a folder on me in the wilderness to supplement my fixed blade.

My thinking is, I carry a folder in my pocket for EDC when driving to the wilds, so why not bring it with?

i typically carry my EDC in the woods with me, which is mostly a large Case stockman with bonestag (CV steel)

I love using the Buck 110 and carry that in the mountains alot. I also always have a smaller Buck stockman in my pocket just as an edc habit! IMHO there really isn't anything that a Buck 110 can't handle in the woods, filleting, food prep, skinning, gutting, whittling, fuzz sticks, just a great all around and useful blade!

Diamond Dog - you're all right,bro !!!
The Buck 110 is my all time favourite locking folder !

Everyone will probably laugh, as I've come to learn that a lot of people don't like Cold Steel, but I have carried a 4" Cold Steel Voyager Tanto every day since 1994.

It was my first duty knife in 1994 and one has been with me ever since.

I am on my second one and the only reason it's my second is because of a "wardrobe malfunction" back when my wife and I were dating - we were asleep and her jeans hooked the clip and when I got startled and went to get up it flexed and I couldn't react in a daze quickly enough to save it before it snapped.

Both my Voyagers were made in Japan and the lock is still absolutely solid. Edge retention has always been good.

I don't generally use it in outdoors roles but it's there.

I always have a SAK Huntsman Plus an generally some type of fixed blade close as well. Maybe a few others too...:D

Don't laugh at my Voyager Tanto - I'm attached to it. :)

always have at least one folder with me:
Spyderco
or SAK Farmer
or Timerline
or byrd
or Cold Steel Voyager clip point
:)

I bring my reground ZT0500 into the woods......Tom Krein does amazing work! :D
