Do you carry a fixed blade attached to your pack? How?

I will usually have a folder clipped to my pocket while hiking or backpacking. So if I bring a fixed blade too, I generally just pack it inside my pack.

Great tip! I love it, simple and effective!:thumbup:

Now why the heck did I think of that? Heck, another idea is to make up an appropriate sized paracord lanyard and rig that up to dangle the sheath. This way you can have a lanyard on hand if you want one but not necessarily attached to the knife for when you don't want it.

Oh, I really like the paracord idea! I might have to whip something up, it would look a little nicer to boot. But, for those who aren't into making leather goods, or tying lanyards, the carabiner is quick and easy.

Um. I want a helicopter so I can get to all of the nice fishing spots easily. Good heavens, man. That's the coolest redneck-pimp ride I've ever seen.

LOL! I wish we got choppered in!
redneck-pimp ride... you crack me up.

That unfortunately was for someone else down in the ravine who broke there hip. The pilot was nice enought to take a picture and B.S. with us a little while he was waiting for the others to get the guy up to the helicopter.

Too bad Stingray. I really wanted that helicopter to be yours. That would be so amazing- to have enough money where you owned your own helicopter and could fly in to super-remote, difficult to get to spots and fish. If I ever "get mine", that's what I'm going to do. Except, my helicopter will have a badass flame job, with nudie girl nose art.

Even better, have my pilot bring me in real low over a bear, and leap from the skids onto the bear's back with a knife in my teeth. With a camera man there to get a pic of me in midair, just as I'm about to land on the bear, with the bear looking up at me in fear. That would be so great.

Thanks for the ideas!
I really like the idea of making my own dangler sheath. I think I still have some paracord leftover too.
Stingray - Does the carbiner ever get in the way of your pack hip belt? I am at school right now so I can't try my pack on to make sure it wouldn't interfere. I guess as long as I have the hip belt above where the carbiner connects to my pants I should be fine. I wouldn't want a metal biner sandwiched between my hip and my pack's belt. I think if that is a problem I could then use a small loop of paracord to lower the biner out of the way. I will try it when I get back from class.

Moonwilson - I would pay to see a video of you doing that, if you lived to tell about it. :)

Myright - I like the way you attached your knife. I would have to either get a new sheath, or attach some paracord somehow to make it work. Plus the knife that I use is a little longer, so it might get in the way.

mdauben - Sometimes I will just keep a fixed blade inside my pack, but occasionally I will hike alone and I feel a little more comfortable with a bigger knife easily accessible.

The problem I have found with attaching it to the side of the pack, is that because the pack has a frame, the pack site farther away from your back, making it harder to reach around and get it. That is why I like the idea of having it on my waist, or somewhere close by.

storl - I have thought about attaching it upside down from the pack shoulder strap, but I am not sure if it would work. Partly because it looks to "rambo" for me. And partly because my knife is just the regular full size KaBar with the leather sheath, so it may not stay inside the sheath. I would either have to buy a new sheath for it or try to rig up somewhat to make it stay inside better. Money is tight right now, so buying a new sheath is out of the question. At least the leather sheath does have an attachment point on the bottom, so it could work.

Thanks for the ideas, I will have to try somethings out tonight.

I once had Eric at onscene tactical make me a rig for my RD-9 that had slots for my pack's compression straps to go through. It held the RD-9 nice and tight to the side of my pack. Pretty handy.

I do like the "have it attached to you" camp though. I'm a big fan of danglers or droploops to get the sheath below the big 'ol pack belt.

If you're going to dream, might as well be big. LOL

I keep a larger knife attached to pack ,RC6 molle clips to pygmy falconII,my NWA Sierra scout on my belt attached to me !

I'm the other way around...a larger one on a drop sheath and a smaller one inverted on my shoulder strap.

You mean some people carry only one knife

You could also carry it on a MercHarness, which despite many people's initial impression, is comfortable, even with a medium sized knife.... And it could hang on your side, between the strap and the bag.

Or, Survival sheaths make a *really* nice shoulder system.

Robert also makes harness and sheath systems that position your knife anywhere.... Including a Thigh Sheath....

No, it doesn't. If you look at the first pic with the helicopter, you'll see that the pack hip belt is far higher than my belt line.

Your pack hip belt should sit so that the top of your illiac crest is about an inch below the top of the pack hip belt, or more generally, the front of the belt should cover your belly button. For 99.9% of people that is above were they were there pants, so you shouldn't have a problem with sandwitching.

Ok, I just got back and tried a couple different ways of attaching a knife to my pack.
I tried the quick and easy carabiner to the belt loops, but I did not like it too much. I think it was because it tended to swing around too much. It is just too loose. If I made a custom leather drop thing it might help it to not swing around too much. So I tried a couple other ways to do it.

This first picture is for my large backpacking pack, a kelty red cloud 5600. I tried attaching it to my shoulder strap, but I found that it tended to swing around too much. But luckily the pack has a small strap that is used to make minor adjustments for the waist belt. I found if I just slipped it through that it would stay put and not swing around. With the carabiner it stays low enough that it is not up in my face the whole time too.

This next one is from my gregory Z35r pack. I ended up finding that the best way is to just loop it around the lower part of my shoulder strap. It slides down to the bottom and does not swing around too much. It is almost behind me, so it is reachable, but it is not in the way at all.

I generally wear my pants at nipple level personally. This way I can get the bargain polyester brown old man pants (cotton kills) with the 40" crotch. The advantage of this approach is you can use the zipper for your pants to replace the zipper on your duffle bag if you need too. :D :D

What knife is that? And if it is a Busse, please describe it with words, not letters, I don't know all the abbreviations.

I often tie my old Vietnam Ontario Marine knife on mine. In a pinch it will do about anything.

Do you have any images of that knife?

I hope this could help you.

BTW, I'm not a big fan of hanging things from a pack,
except for ice axes or skis.
When I carry a pack, I carry my knife in a top lid pocket.
After arriving camp site, I take my knife out of pack and
hang it from a sling running around my waist.

I don't normally strap blades to my pack.

I made this for a customer a while back...... spaced for MOLLE...

I carry an RC-3 on my shoulder strap, but it's MOLLE, so that helps out a lot. :)

For reference, the bag is a Maxpedition Malaga Gearslinger.

I'm with 42B (sounds like a bra size ). Inverted if you knife is secure in the sheath or right side up, if not. And you don't have to overthink it - no Molle, no loops, tape the sheath to your pack strap. I've done it many times - no problem.

An old picture, although this is on a Baldric strap, not a pack strap, but same idea:

I've done the carabiner way but I didn't care for it plus I don't always trust the belt loops to hold the knife if it snags on something. A while back I had the idea to use a short section of gutted paracord to make a simple loop that would go through the sheath and around my belt. After I tied the knot I glued the ends down. I had a pic of it but I can't find it now.

Marion

It's a Boss HG55 and is the current knife available from the main Busse site.
