Do you carry?

Hello!

My name is Spencer, and this will be my first post here. (I came here because I too am a knife lover.)

Do any of you carry knives? If so, do you carry them openly, or concealed?

Just a question for discussion that I thought might prove interesting.

Cheers all!

Spencer

Welcome to the forum Spencer. I'd be surprised if anyone says NO to your question. In fact most people here carry more than one blade on them at a time.

I carry one. Openly and concealed, it depends what kind of mood I'm in. Sometimes I have a Slippie tucked in my pocket or I have my Delica or Grip clipped in my pocket.

I'm not one to carry a FB unless I'm in the woods then it'll be open carry for sure.

I carry my knives too. Sometimes in my pocket, but most often on my belt in a sheath; both fixed and folding.

I almost always carry knives. I carry a Victorinox Classic on my keychain (24-7), and have some combination of a traditional or SAK in my pocket, a tactical clipped to my pocket or a multi-tool in a belt sheath. I rarely carry fixed blades outside of the woods, but it happens every now and then-always legal length mind you- (ie. working on something, and I have it on my belt when I go to the hardware store to pick-up some extra supplies).

I carry a Leatherman Wave on my belt, and a craftsman utility knife with pocket clip in my right pocket. All depends on where you go, some places do not allow open carry.

Okay, good. :-D Nice to see we're on the same page, sometimes one can get serious flak for carrying a "weapon" (oh noes!). ;-P

I live in California, to be precise, but after having done a bit of research I find the laws to be such a legal mess that it gives me a headache.

Does anyone here live in California? I'm hoping to carry the Fury Stealth Boot Knife, one of my favorite knives:

But, I'm a little hesitant. She's not small, and she's a fixed blade. What do you think? Bad idea? I'm just looking for a bigger and better knife to carry than my little Gerber folder, which is more of a tool than anything else. ;-P And call me crazy, but I hope someone else here understands me on this one. Am I the only one that likes carrying something, and even perhaps finds it comforting (not sure if that's the right word though) to carry?

(Note that I do want to open carry.)

there are a few recent threads on ca law regarding knife carry.

it is confusing, and after reading through some of the threads, my opinions have changed (per my posts).

often, a concealed fixed blade is going to get you arrested should it be found by law enforcement.

the law prohibits concealed carry of a dirk/dagger capable of "ready use as a stabbing weapon." it is my opinion that this does not necessarily include carry of all fixed blade knives. and it should be noted that the penal code does not define a dagger as a double edged knife.

a general exemption is whether or not the knife is for lawful employment or recreation. it would be difficult to argue that your boot knife fits either description.

when asked, i normally recommend against concealed fixed blade carry, though there have been exceptions.

my Benchmade 710 is on my person, unless i'm swimming, showering, or sleeping.

i've been wanting to make the switch to carrying a FB, concealed somedays, open on others, depending on clothing/weather. i've been recently let down by Benchmade, though and the FB i had my heart set on was a BM, so i might be a folder guy for awhile longer. plus concealing a FB and a handgun gets a little annoying.

reread your post. i see you want to carry openly.

the only exemption for open carry is "openly suspended from the belt". it is also my opinion this is an exemption, not an example of legal carry.

It's called a boot knife, but I was planning on belt carry. So...you're thinking it would not be considered legal?

Sigh....

if worn on the belt, in plain view, ie no part of the handle or sheath are concealed by clothing, it is legal per ca law.

you must also be aware of city or county laws where you live.

I know here in Tennessee, it is illegal to carry a knife with a blade longer than 4 inches on you. Plus carrying a boot knife open on your belt is just asking for trouble. Its just like here in tennessee, where if you have a permit, you can legally carry a pistol, but if you choose to carry it open, and police see you walkin down the road with a gun on your side and no badge, they are gonna stop and drill a gun in your ear. Its always better to carry legal. I know more people say carry concealed, but I am like this, if its illegal, dont carry it, and if you do carry an illegal weapon concealed, than you will be charged with possession of an illegal concealed weapon if caught. I carry my leatherman wave on my belt but it is always under my shirt, so i never catch any crap with it. I have carried it and a pocket knife with a clip on it into the wildhorse saloon and nothing was ever said to me. I heard an instance where in NYC if you are caught with a pocket knife with a clip, or a multi-tool on your belt, they wont cofiscate it, but you will get a fine, but you can take that same multi tool and put it in your pocket or knife, and as long as it can be openly seen, than no problem.

While I am at work (in the office), I EDC a German-made military pocket knife. The knife was made by Victorinox under contract for the German army and has green plastic handles, one knife blade, one saw blade with a combination can opener/bottle opener/screwdriver at the tip, one leather punch (I use it as a staple-remover!) and a corkscrew. The knife has done everything from opening cans of coffee for the coffee brewers to unjamming photocopiers and fax machines. The best part: it is sheeple-friendly. Even my VP borrowed it one day and commented on how handy it was. By far, the best $20 I ever spent!

How 'bout if I wore a jacket in the cooler months, and it was sorta hidden by that?

I would interpret the law to mean that if you are attempting to obscure (cocneal) it (including covering it with a jacket), then you are carry a concealed. This is a problem that open carriers all over face- needing to be extra dilligent to make sure that they don't accidentally conceal when not legally allowed to do such.

I always have atleast 1 most of the time 2-3 knives on me when i am not in school or airports or otherwise prohibited areas.
