Do you carry?

Are you allowed to have a knife in the non-"sterile" section of the airport. Say I want to dropoff or pickup some family and will just be in the lobby and baggage sections, is this ok?

I'm not sure if it's ok or not. I recently picked up my wife at BWI and met her inside at baggage claim. I had my Spyderco Delica with me and left it in the car. I didn't want to even have to worry about anything.

I'm sure it would have been fine to carry there though. I'm sure a case could be made for carrying and not carrying in "non-sterile" parts of the airport.

Like the quote above says, I wouldn't even try anything like this. Simply because I don't wanna lose my best knife, and possibly go to jail. Leaving you knife in the car will prevent so much from happening, and you can be in and out of there with no hassles. I know some people would say it is "stupid" to do that, but for the person who carries a knife everyday, its not normal to have to leave our knives anywhere to enter a building. Even the courthouse here, I can walk in there with my knife and nobody says a word to me.

To make the post short; The only time I do not carry is when I am on the plane, and even then, the knives are in the checked luggage in the belly of the plane, with at least one folder within easy reach when its time to claim my baggage upon destination.

That was just based on my opinion. Your best bet would be to check out the knife laws of where you are gonna be, be an airport or wherever. This day in age you can't really claim ignorance, cause they will say you can look online and all that, because the resources are everywhere. Go to yahoo or google and type in "knife laws for (wherever) and there should be an abundance of information there.

It all depends on your airport. I know that my airport (Sea-Tac) you are allowed to have your firearm/knives with you until the security checkpoint. At that time, you may not go any further.

So if I was picking someone up at the airport IE baggage claim, I am not pass the check point so therefore I can have my firearm/knife on me. The only time you need to worry is when you have to pass through some sort of check point. At that time, you should NOT have anything on you.

My understanding for knife carry, in general (some cities have their own codes), in California:

Fixed blade - must be open carry, open carry in any suburban or urban areas will highlight you to law enforcement and probably be more trouble then it's worth. I only carry a fixed blade in the woods while camping / hunting / etc.

Folding knife - Can carry concelealed any length of knife, but open carry is prohibited. Again, there are places (like around schools) where no knives are allowed and then specific municipalities with their own laws.

Again ... Folding, any length, concealed, is OK in Cali

So that law really makes sense then. I can get busted for toting a BRKT PSK 2.25" fixed blade in my shirt pocket along with my writing pen, but not for toting a Benchmade LFK 5.2" folder stuffed in my waistband?:jerkit:

Exactly! Remember, these are West Coast laws are are specifically designed to remove all commen sense from the equation.

Boy is carrying in California a hot topic. Maybe it's a good thing too, because from all the posts about the subject the rules are very clear...

OK, I carry one Benchmade or another in my right front pocket. I only own one fixed, a 220, which is carried only on hikes and when camping. I own a few BM autos, which spend their time in the safe. They don't go out.

Like many of you, I don't think twice about carrying a knife, it's been that way most of my life and that's not going to change. Just be polite and aware of your surroundings and there really should be no worries!

LOL, haha! Right, right. :-D Looks like I'll just have to carry a nice folder. Curses! I love FBs. I need to upgrade my carrying folder....

Thanks, guys. Really appreciate all the help!

I was going to state Left Coast laws in my earlier post but I bit my tongue not wanting to offend anyone. ;) Here I am going to tote my fixed blade RAT RC-3 at work tomorrow. Heck, state law enforcement in downtown Nashville see me take it out of my left front pocket where it is totally concealed and use it on the job and don't say nothing. I feel sorry for you CA guys.:(

Don't worry; we here on the left coast know it sucks.

There's 3 of them- 2 vics and an Aitor.
Yes sir, that is the one that I carry daily. Nice photo. I use a rawhide bootlace thru the lanyard hole and attached to my belt when I am out on the water (fishing), so I don't accidentally drop it into the drink. Very handy; does 99% of what I need a tool for!:)
