i cant edc any hi dollar knife simply because im afraid of ruining it. now if im going to a show or something i will but if i know im going out to ride or work the chances are i may damage it and take 420hc or maybe my m16 aus8 but the s30v and 154cms stay home for special occasions or am i just a wus.

I'm from the camp that thinks knives should be used, high-tech steel or old-school steel it doesn't matter.

If I won't use a certain knife, I won't buy that certain knife.

But I don't own anything really expensive or special.

I do plan on buying a Godfather and an Al Mar SERE 2000, though, and I plan on using them.

There are knives I would not use. Such as very fancy, rare, or otherwise special knives. But I would not buy those knives in the first place.

I`ve carried and used every knife I have. The again, my expensive knife is a $185 custom with a fixed 2 1/2 inch blade. All my knives were bought to use and not just look at.

No Paul, you are not a wus. I say that because I do pretty much what you do and I am no wus. One just needs to own various knives for all occasions. Some hard use knives, some light use knives and yes, even some safe queen just to look at knives. The point (pun) is just to love knives. It's all good.

If I don't carry it or use it, I sell it.

Among my folders I've actually defined three categories for myself: 1) "beaters" that I frequently carry and use and sometimes abuse; 2) "limited use carriers" that are relatively high-end folders that I'll carry for very special occasions (formals) but rarely, if ever, use for cutting; and 3) "no carry" knives that are top-end folders that I can appreciate and occasionally use (cutting chores) at home but never carry. These categories tend to correspond with the relative values of the various folders. I've found that for me it's not the "cutting" with the knives that place them at risk but, rather, the "carrying" that creates the risk.

Interesting... I use the same cagegories for my firearms.

I'm the opposite, GoodGuy.

I spend the most on the knives I will use the most.

I just bought a cheapo butterfly knife. I knew I was going to flip it a few times and then put it in a box. I will toy with it from time to time, but I mainly bought it just to have at least one butterfly knife in my collection, for the sake of variety. Since I knew I wasn't going to use it much, I wanted to spend as little as possible and still get a knife that I found (visually) appealing.

If I want to buy a knife for EDC-duties, I spend more money. Right now my best knives are my Leek, Native, and 110. They are also the knives I use the most.

Like I said above, I want to buy a SERE 2000 and maybe a Godfather. When I get the SERE 2000, that is going to be the knife I use the most. I also want a Manix.

Why pay more for performance and durability if you aren't going to use it?

I'd think that the best knives to go cheap with are there ones where performance and durability don't matter since they won't be used.

If a knife is very fancy-looking and I would be scared to scuff it or dirty it, I wouldn't buy it in the first place. I have no interest in knives as art or fashion accessories. To me, they are tools.

I am not saying you are wrong. It's just a matter of preference. I'm just giving my view.

When I am not in a very "knifey" mood and could stand to use a junker instead of one of my favorite knives, I will bring a junker with me since I won't mind as much if I lose it. But most of the time I *am* in a "knifey" mood and do want to enjoy the quality of my better knives. So I can understand your not wanting to damage, wear, or lose your high-priced knives.

Paul, I'm kind of a wuss myself, and what I've been doing for a long time is carrying a SAK along with a high-dollar folder. The SAK is what I use, and I justify not using the "high-dollar" one because I'm saving its edge for self-defense (primarily against dogs). I think mainly I just like to have it to fondle.

yea like the other day my roomate locked himself out of his room and we had to get a ladder and get up to his window and get the screen off so he could get in. He yells ANYBODY GOT A KNIFE...so I threw up my beloved pristine caly ZDP to him..uh oh...I knew he was going to bend it or something but he got the screen off and didnt put a scratch on it..believe i inspected that thing for 30 mins...whew

I am from the same camp. If you buy it and it sits in your drawer - you have waisted your opportunity to get something else with those funds. Unless, of course, you are a collector, which I am not.

yea i edc a deluxe tinker all the time but i just didnt have it...darn good knife that deluxe tinker especially doesnt have that goofy corkscrew!!

I used to hate the corkscrews since I have no use for them, but have since changed my mind a little because of the really cool eyeglass screwdriver that fits in the corkscrew. Don't need it myself anymore (had lasik surgery), but it comes in handy from time to time with my middle daughter's glasses.

Haven't thought of it looking like a drill bit. If you go to one of the knife sites that have close-in pictures, look up the Vic Spartan Lite. It should have a good picture of the tiny screwdriver. It is kinda odd looking.

I am of the opinion that if a particular knife is never used it is jewelry.
Some like jewelry and some don't.
