do you edc your best knives?

I've used knives just about all my life.Started collecting 10 or 12 years ago. Did the A.G. Russell thing for a while, some very nice knives by the way.Was into folders for a while, still am,just not as much as I used to be.
Lately, last several years, have been into fixed blades, primarily Bowie's and Fighters and yes MS and JS makers wares.I definitely use 'em,had to see if they would live up to the,I won't say hype, higher cost.Wasn't disappointed, did some rope cutting,2 X 4 chopping, deer butchering along with small game. All are high carbon steel,1095,1084,5160,52100.Anywho,I think getting into the Customs was the most satisfying aspect of my knife user/collector addiction.Any minor edge deformation, dulling is usually easily remedied, although I do kinda' take it easy on mirror polished, pricier knifes.I'm no Cliff Stamp, though! :D

Not EDC but C and I keep it in my pocket or on my belt in one of those black nylon or kydex velcro sheaths to avoid it getting knicked up by change and car keys. This is about a $2 fix for the problem. It decreases the accessability slightly because I have to flip open the sheath to get to the knife but I don't find this a problem.

I don't carry most of my knives because they are WAY bigger than I need and should carry. I like big knives. I carry most of my smaller ones though.

I'm sort of with DGG on this one. I've found that the "cordura" sheaths work well with EDC and, for me, help protect the knife and offer relatively quick access without a lot of fumbling.

I use all of my knives without thinking twice. I dont see a point in buying a knife and then never using it. That just seems like a waste of money to me.

I often carry two ECDs, One is a $500.00 Sawby folder that I bought about seven years ago, my other ECD is a Pro Tech Godfather. The funny thing is that I use the Sawby most of the time because it is much more of a utility knife. I just can’t see buying or owning a knife that I won’t/can’t carry or use.

I don't carry some of my best knives simply because they're not particularly comfortable to carry...

A 710 and Endura 3 for instance feel better in the pocket than, - let's say -
a Schatt & Morgan File & Wire ATS-34 English Jack.

Is the English Jack better than the Endura 3? Well, not when it comes to being "carryable".

Such different knives -

I really don't even know, come to think of it, what my "best" knife is

Yes, I do EDC my best knives!! I too a from the school of thought that they ARE meant to be used!! I EDC a Sebbie, and 1-2 customs!! And I too can't see buying a knife and not using it!!

I used to never carry my wood inlay sebbie. Then one day I got "crazy" and put it into my pocket. Several scratches later and I truly appreciate the engineering that went into this knife. I have a Hinderer, a couple William Henry's, and a Lochsa. All get used, but not as much as the Sebbie. There IS a difference between using and abusing, though. I am not prying any paint can lids off with my classier knives. Most any cutting chores are fair game though :)

Yup - definitely buy with the intent to use. My two most expensive are my Spydie Paramilitary and Al Mar SERE 2K, which up here, are both up over $200 CDN. I do use them. I'm not a hard user, but I do buy quite frequently and I do cut a fair amount, so for me, that game is basically, find a new one, carry it in amongst my "regulars" and see if one of the new ones can replace one of the regulars. Now this can get ugly:) What if one is "as good" and hence it doesn't replace any? That's when you start lugging 6 or 8 or so:D My newly acquired Spydie Delica 4 replaced my D3 but my D3 replaced my Blaze during the week. Also, my Centofante IV replaced my BM 530 for a short time. BUT I'm carrying my CIII as well:eek: I recently acquired a new multitool, a Paladin PT510 (SOG is the manufacturer) and it's replaced the Wave II on my belt, but the Wave replaced my PST in my Maxpedition. I do like my Wave, so this is just a short term trial, so far. I'm going to see if I can get a Spydie UKPK from a CDN vendor, and most definitely, I think, is an SE Delica 4. that's when it's going to get really complicated.

do you edc your best knives?

Absolutely not. My "best" knives are too expensive to replace easily. Many would be impossible to replace at all, being one-of-a-kind, discontinued, or vintage knives. And many of my "best" knives would be entirely impractical, if not illegal, to carry; they certainly wouldn't be allowed at work.

For an EDC I select something small and practical, inexpensive, and that can be replaced with a phone call. In fact, should my EDC be discontinued, I have a duplicate in my collection too. :)

Very cool to read the variety of responses to the question.

Best Wishes,

Only time I wouldn't carry a knife I own is because of possible legal issues (size, opening features, yadda yadda). I am planning to buy a balisong eventually and I won't be able to carry that legally where I live. Might do it once for shits and giggles though. :p

When I do finally get around to purchasing a "custom/high dollar" knife, I'll throw that in my pocket too.

I've carried a DC Munroe Chimera for about 9 years, a Jeff Hall too, and use a Tiz Pozzibon (aka Adone) engraved custom hunter as my hunting knife, so what do YOU think?

That said, I just picked up an S30V leek as a new EDC, because I want more of a "Point" than the Chimera gives me, plus using a V sharpener, I always end up rounding the tip of the knife - wnated something I could put on a flat stone. First opinion? The leek is going to be a closet queen, and I'll be searching for another custom for EDC

Well, none of my knives are customs or really that expensive. However, a couple are fairly difficult to come by in new(or next thing to it) condition as they are discontinued and they haven't found their way into my pocket very often. I like the idea of using a knife that is current and easy to replace if it was to become damaged or lost. The ones that are discontinued are on my list to duplicate so I can use them without that feeling of possibly ruining or losing them. The more I read this thread, the more I want to put them into the rotation, though.

Yes, I EDC my customs!!The maker made them to use, not sit in a drawer.
Some of those customs looks like jewels. I don't know if I could use one of those when I have a beater lying around somewhere. But I wouldn't buy one, so I guess I'm in the boat with using the knives that you buy unless you are a collector.

I've used and carried all of the most expenive knives that I own.

Ed Fowler made me a Gent's Pronghorn that is as close to the knife that he carries as he could make it. He made it for me so I could carry it EDC, and I did. Maybe more than I should have, because the knife was really starting to show it. I stopped carrying it ashamed of the condition I had let it get to.
It's back with Ed to clean it up. I was hoping he wouldn't get on my case about the condition and his only comment was, how he could he get mad at anyone for using one of his knives.

BTW there is no right or wrong answer to this question, do whatever seems right to you.
