Do You Ever NOT Use Your Knife?

Just an observation, I recently noticed that a few days had gone by and I never even removed my knife from my pocket, except when I was changing clothes at the end of the day.

So I was wondering how often you guys have days where you never remove your knife from your pocket to use it. Playing with it, flipping it open, looking at it, etc. doesn't count.

Thanks!

Ive had days where that happens. Knife never leaves my pocket. Ive gone through whole days at work never using my knife. It happens sometimes, theres just nothing to cut and Im too busy to play with my knife. But the days where I use the heck out of a knife make up for it.

Most of the days, really, my SAK sees the light only because it is hanging from my keychain. I think the embedded toothpick sees just as much use as the blade, statistically :). I guess such is life for people working in office environments.

I don't think that playing with a blade that closes with an audible click is what other "IT people" trying to focus on their work would appreciate either, so I feel - in my case - it's not a good idea.

Sure, it happens. More frequently I find myself carrying multiple cutting tools and only really ever using one of them. Doesn't matter though. I love my pocket sized bits of joy too much.

Yes it happens to me frequently and it makes me sad :)..... at the end of the day while emptying my pockets I ask "Do I give this blade another chance or try something different"....weird I know

I use one almost every day, if only to slice an apple at work (it tastes better sliced thin). The patina is coming along nicely on my Opinel no.8 carbone :)

Rarely, if ever, when at work, but it happens with some regularity on my days off. When a knife is brand new I'll look for excuses to use it, but once it becomes a comfortable part of my EDC I don't bother.

I use my knife mostly at work, but in free time too. It seems like some days you use your knife constantly and then comes day when you barely even take it out of the pocket.

A knife is part of my work gear. I spend the morning opening boxes, pallets and banding material. Due to that I actually carry three knives.
One for dirty work, boxes, et al. (Custom fixed blade in CPM REX 76 @ 64 hrc)
One for clean work, food and food grade plastics. (Changes between Traditional and modern folders)
One as a back up, Victorinox Secretary in my wallet in case I forget my other two.

Being retired now has lessened the need for a knife as often as it did in the past. Doesn't matter, the knife is a tool that should be available at all times just in case there is a loose thread or apple that needs cutting. I have carried a knife since I was young, needed or not.

Its rare I use mine. I used it two nights ago and that was it.

In most work places its against the rules to use your knife in their building. I know that every factory I have worked in in the last 15 years that it is forbidden to even have one on you let alone use it.

At home I use a kitchen knife or scissors so the only time I use my personal knife is if I am out doing my own thing or working in the garage.

Mr Watson, now that you are retired, you will be part of those old timers sitting around the old country store playing checkers, whittling a stick or, or slicing an apple....you entered the realm of the Norman Rockwell. Better to have a knife and not need it, than need one and one is no wherein sight. And yes, opening and closing and playing with a knife is considered use...as long as it brings its owner joy. I like the statement above about pocket sized bits of joy.

No. I need to open something with a knife every day. Hay bale and mail, usually.

There are days that my one-hand opening/clip carry knife never gets used. But my SAK Spartan sees use every single day for something or other. Not necessarily at work, but in my life.

Sometimes there is nothing to cut!

When I read the title I thought of times when I reached for my knife, realized the company I was in, then used my keys to open a package instead.

Most days I find myself needing to use it for something or other. It's kind of like carrying a flashlight. You might not have realized how much you needed one until you start carrying it, but then you find out how often it is helpful, and it eventually just becomes second nature to reach for it. Most importantly, however, is that my main "use" for carrying these things it to have them on hand whenever I DO absolutely need them.

There is one thing I have stopped using knives for though, and that is opening boxes that use paper packing tape rather than plastic. I prefer to rip them open as a sort of exercise for hand strength. I use the term exercise loosely of course, as I realize it doesn't take much hand strength to open a box. I kinda just see it like the way I prefer taking the stairs rather than elevators whenever possible.

Sure - sometimes I go weeks never needing a pocket knife. I don't need to cut things as part of my job, or during my normal daily commute to and from work in my car.

Sometimes whole days can go by that i don't really need my knife. Living in an urban environment is different than life on a farm or ranch.

My old man once told me something that I never forgot. He said that a pocket knife is something that is carried a lot, but used a little now and then. When I was a kid and all men carried a knife in their pocket, it was always some little one of two blade penknife. It was all they really needed. Todays knife market is artificially motivated by hype of a product that has very little to with the real world.
