Do You Ever NOT Use Your Knife?

I do it all the time. I'm not the type to "look for reasons" to cut things. I still use scissors when appropriate, or my hands to open certain packages.
Granted the vast majority, if not all will outlive me, but every time I use one I also know I shorten the life of the edge. It'll get closer to needing resharpening, and down the road that will cost more time and money in materials, (stones and what not), so if I don't "need" to use my knife, I don't use it. The result, many a day where they just become pocket jewelry, however it's still always nice to know it's there for when the opportunity presents itself to use, like a gun or fire extinguishers or smoke detector, I'd much rather have one and not need it then need one and not have one available.

That s frugal! And I thought I was tight.:D

Some days the knife may not get much use.

I like unexpected use, like at the Bell store the other day.
My crappy flip-phone finally had the screen die, so I had to upgrade to the cheapest smartphone that came free with the basic phone plan.
The guy at the counter was trying to open the box, and started searching for something to cut the tape with.

I said, "Need a knife?"
He did.
So I opened up the ZT 0392PURBLKWC and handed it over.
It did the job very easily, and he said, "That's a nice knife."

In the days that followed, I have used the knife more than the phone, which is as it should be. :D

For me its about dependable availability...similar to a concealed weapon...not daily utility.

Best.

I must admit, even on the days I use my knife very heavily, I almost always use a phone more. Sadly, it's the nature of the business.

Hi. For me it is really rare not to use my pocket knife :). Normally, when I’m in the office, my day starts early and I prepare my breakfast, slicing down some fruits, bread and cheese, spread the jam on the cookies, etc. Lunch also is a moment where my pocket knives comes into play, cutting some bread again, occasional cold cuts, cheese and fruits again. When out at suppliers it’s a busy agenda for my knives: PP straps to cut, cardboard boxes to open, shrink and stretch film to remove, etc., I keep my sharpies quite busy :D. At home there is always some “maintenance” activity or household chores to carry out, from gardening to minor repairs and, again, a knife comes in handy. Often at home, I also have fun with them in the kitchen, even if more dedicated and effective tools would be available. But it’s fun :p ! I also regularly take them during my walks in the woods or my hikes and they take care again of minor food prep on the trails and all the camping tasks, including some minor wood-working (some carving and whittling just for fun). Some of them pictured here, busy in their daily activities. Just to share!

I use mine daily. I carry a work knife which gets used multiple times a day and an "off-duty" piece that gets used throughout the rest day as well.

Having kids makes using your knives a bit easier, it's either cut open a toy or please cut my food...

Even if it isn't just for cutting, the need always comes up for me.

I normally carry two knives. I usually use my main folder, which stays ready in my front pocket, for something almost every day. I also carry a large SAK on my belt however, and that hardly ever gets used. I enjoy carrying it however, and has been a part of me for years now. Plus, it seems like every time I try to get away with just a knife a screw needs to be tightened!

Am I the only one who uses their knife to cut open anything I can possibly cut open ?
I find that even when things come in easy tear packaging it's just easier to effortlessly glide through it with a sharp knife than to try to tear it open.
I don't look for things to cut , but if something needs opening It's second nature for me to grab my knife cut it open . So much so that I sometimes find myself automatically opening my knife as I enter the kitchen, just last week I went to get a drink of water and had to put my knife back in my pocket.

Just an observation, I recently noticed that a few days had gone by and I never even removed my knife from my pocket, except when I was changing clothes at the end of the day.

So I was wondering how often you guys have days where you never remove your knife from your pocket to use it. Playing with it, flipping it open, looking at it, etc. doesn't count.

Thanks!

Often, but even if I'll need a pocket knife once a week, when it's needed I'd like to have it in my pocket.

Whatever fancy folder is in my pocket often sees days without use, and even gets left behind sometimes. I always have an alox SAK in a lower pocket for the tools and a plier tool in my bag, but since I've carried a neck knife it's seen service every single day—it's just too convenient to be able to reach through your shirt, grab it, slice, and put it back.

At any rate, I'd always rather be—as John Le Carre put it—"the kind of friendly spirit who always has a timetable and a penknife."

I use a large folder (Opinel, Sodbuster, Buck 110) most mornings when making my breakfast and many times during the week for lunch. I use the same knife for use in the shop or around the property regularly.

I carry a Micra in my RFP and that also sees pretty much daily use. Each implement gets used regularly.

None of my knives ever see anything but occasional light-duty. They're primarily pocket-jewelry, but I enjoy them.

We have no cell service where we live. My wife & I both have one, but our phones don't get a lot of use. I think the most mine gets used is when my wife & I get separated at Wal Mart, and I get scared & have to call her to come find me.:)

I don't think a day goes by that I don't use my knife several times, though.

Sure. I have quite a few days where my knife doesn't get used while I am out and about. But I don't look for reasons to pull it out of my pocket. Its there if I need it. Those times when I do need it do come up. Whether or not its enough to justify daily carry is subjective. But for my personal tastes I would rather carry it even if the need wont present itself that day.
