Do you guys use your most expensive knives?

Use em, don’t use em - it’s your prerogative. I just think it’s a waste. To me it’s like buying a $300,000 Lamborghini, airlifting it into a climate controlled garage, then sitting in a lawn chair cracking a brew looking at it.

I personally love it when guys don’t use their knives. They’re NIB when I scoop em up cheap on the secondary. Love it. Thank you.
The whole point for me is for (what I consider) the more expensive one to hold its value for if/when it does hit the secondary market. I’d rather beat the piss out of a $35 knife and devalue it to nothing than a $300+ knife. But again, that’s just me. All that being said, yeah, I do question the wisdom of buying something I think is too nice and expensive to use. Pretty sure I won’t be buying any more safe queens.

I got a smaller collection of GECs and I find it hard to use most them hence I more or less stopped the chase for more knives of said brand. My most expensive knife though, a PJ Sebenza Insingo is in my pocket most of the time.

My knives are tools and they're meant to be used. My second most expensive folder (Spartan Harsey) is always ready for whatever EDC tasks arise. My most expensive folder (Hinderer XM-24) is currently lost since we just moved houses and I live amongst a sea of nondescript boxes.

I seem to collect knives but don't consider myself a collector. Most things I use my knives for could generally be accomplished with a utility knife or scissors. I just enjoy knives. The most expensive knife I've ever bought should be here by Monday and it'll be in my pocket as soon as the package is opened.

Carrying my Biryukov today. Only qualms was that I heard CPM-S125V can be brittle, and I'm a little nervous about sharpening it. However, it is so insanely sharp, and with the high edge retention, it will be sometime before it needs it.

Yes I use them. But my most expensive knife was a $160 ZT from KC several years ago. I dabble in the $40 (Rat 1 D2) to $125ish range so I don't get into collectables or high value knives at my budget. I rarely get sprint runs or anything else that might be valuable.

If I found something at a garage sale that was $10 and turned out to be valuable, I might put it aside to save the resale value. I hit pawn shops, flea markets, and garage sales occasionally and haven't struck gold yet.

I most definitely use my knives (the majority, but I don’t have time for ALL of them, haha) Gotta try them out for sure…or they just sit there. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Here are three that are put to regular use…varying pricewise from $300-$1000.

That reminds me, the Sawby needs some edge love. It’s sharpening time!

Two of mine are not replaceable for under 1800-2000. Those get used real easy. Mostly carried and picture taking. The other 7 are 500- 1000. I use them like any other.
If the job is really going to hurt the knife I have a couple 80-90 dollar ones or a razor knife.

Beat 'em like the proverbial red-headed step-child: find out if you got your money's worth...

About 6 or 7 years ago I purchased a custom Emerson CQC-6 on the secondary market for $3200. I carried it and used it every single day for over a year for anything I would use a pocket knife for. I’ve since passed it on but I was never afraid to use that one. Currently, my beater is a boomerang damascus large Sebenza 31 with black micarta inlays.

Well, if you're still around in 15-20 yrs before I kick the bucket, you're welcome to buy all or part of my collection from my estate at the then FMV of the knives for the benefit of the trust that I've established for my heirs. :)
Wow, you have things in place for your collection to be sold at current full market value after you pass on and the monies funneled into a trust established for your heirs? That’s impressive.

My shit will definitely be dumped in one chunk via consignment somewhere like ACK. My peeps aren’t dumb so they won’t be trashed but I have no delusions of them fawning over the things, going through current valuations, or selling one here one there to maximize value. They’ll just go “here are my ol’ man’s knives. Get what you can out of em”. Of course they’ll keep a few since they’re all into knives, but the vast majority will be put on consignment.

My guess is your stuff will end up the same way. Unless you have things set up very specifically. No way to enforce it once you’re in the dirt, so better get busy!😅 After you’re gone you won’t care much what happens to your collection anyway.

Instead of keeping all my stuff pristine to “benefit my heirs” while I get by using cheapo crap, I’d much rather cut things with the nice knives I buy while I’m topside. Bless y’all who don’t - got many a deal on many a NIB long discontinued blade out of that mindset.

yes, coming from construction and carpenter background I tend to use most all my knifes.

I use my user knives as hard as I have a need for. I don't use all my knives though. Simply because I have a few that I feel more like a caretaker than a owner of. Those are knives that I either got for a really good deal that are worth a lot more and found out that it's not really my style, or I have two of the same knife because I got an amazing deal on one and then decided I wanted the other blade shape. Those few knives are just sitting here on my shelf. I like to look at them and play with them but don't pocket or use them. I'm going to sell them eventually but have a mental block on selling knives lately, I tell myself that it takes a bunch of effort when in reality they sell themselves and all I have to do is stop by the post office.

I edc a leatherman Wave. At $100+ retail, its about as high as any multitool in standard specs (no Damascus, not a numbered special edition etc).

Our son was given a Randall #16-1 and a Chris Reeve Green Beret. Both were pricy at retail in 2002 or so. He took both to Iraq and EDC'd each for weeks at a time. There are other more expensive fixed blade knives, but these are premium spec tools from big deal makers.

Any of that count?

Rephrasing is in order for me. Most of my knives are light users, tape, mail, loose threads, occasionally cardboard.

When it comes to heavier stuff, I turn to my Spydercos. XHP, CPM-M4, and CPM-S30V I'm comfortable sharpening if they get dull. With the exception of the Southard being only a year old, they are all well used and very ergonomic, as well as older. Manix 2, PM2, GB1, Yojimbo 2, and Domino.

So, while I use my "expensive " stuff, it's light use.
