I think that they are the finest, most versatile rifle to ever be made. They prove their superiorty at the bullseye and combat matches, at Knob Creek, in the prairie dog towns and deer woods, everywhere and all the time.

You might want to move this over to Practical Tactical...just a thought.

To answer your question, AR's have come a LONG, LONG way in the past 15 or years. Back then you had basically Colt, Bushmaster, and few others offering rifles or carbines, mainly in 5.56/.223. They've now the '1911' of the rifle world, meaning you can have it in just about any configuration that your wallet book can handle. All things considered, they have become a very solid platform, and can be set up to perform in just about any role. I think they are a good rifle that offers a solid and modifiable chassis to work from.

I don't see anything wrong with talking about guns on Blade Forums, but that is just me.

Yeah I like the AR-15, don't have one, but I like em'!

Withdrawn, subarusti is correct.

No, this is a fine and dandy subject.

And while I don't particularly have any interest in ARs, they have the distinction of having more parts and accessories than any other type of rifle- easy to set up just how you want it.

Ok then, I prefer an AK. Keep your damn accesories I will take one that fires all the time no matter what.

I like ar15's and al's both great guns, mine have pretty much the same goodies on each. Both accurate and dependable whats not to like.

Well, now that we are in "Outdoor Gear, Survival Equipment & More"...
I had an AR about 30 years ago. Great gun, but I found that I burned through too much ammo every time I took it to the range. That made it too expensive for me to own. So I sold it and got a Winchester. That worked better for me. YMMV.

I have built 2 over the past 3 months and love them to death. I am not into all the add-ons and accessories. I just like a basic accurate rifle.

I can't say that I actually like them, but I can appreciate them. Nearly any good quality AR variant will be handy, light, reasonably accurate and easy to field strip/repair. Magazines, ammunition and accessories are easy to find, and the ARs with picatinny rails on the receiver and/or forend lend themselves quite naturally to two items I used to shun: good optics and a good light.

(I used to also shun hearing protection, and I was a bit too late in changing my tune on that one.)

This ability to take what I now consider essential accessories so painlessly - along with a plethora of various sling attachment points - make a number of old standby "go-to" utility longarms look a bit lackluster by comparison.

All that being said, I still carry a torch for a short, simple but carefully-chosen 12 ga pump shotgun as an outdoorsman's ballistic "multitool."

AR's are great rifles. I don't own one. Have a Ruger Mini 14 for blasting fun. I seldom even shoot it because I can't see spending the kind of money it takes to feed it. I get almost as much fun shooting semi-auto 22 rifles with the occasional semi-auto pistol thrown into the shooting mix. I keep a supply of ammunition around for it, but I don't usually even take it to the range. Probably the last time I shot it was 4-5 years ago when I burnt up about 500 rounds of ammo and decided I can't afford this kind of "fun" on a regular basis.

My 3 favorites

As for bayonets, well I've never had to lead a bayonet charge so I don't bother with them. Even in the Army we mostly used them to pry open ammo crates and other stuff.

AR, AK, M1A, Mini 14, FAL, Garand, I like them all, own a bunch of them, and think they are fine for the outdoors. :D

If AR's malfunctioned even 1% as often as AK fan-boys claim, none of the match-winners would use the AR15. The "ok" accuracy of a good AR is 1/2 MOA or better. Far more than anyone can demonstrate in the field, certainly. Are you aware that AR's in 223 have owned the 600 yd line at the BE matches for over 15 years now? And they are doing ok at 1000 yds, too. The 1000 yd guys use 1 in 6.5" rifling, 90 gr VLD bullets, and 26" barrels. Those bullets are still traveling at nearly 1200 fps at that distance. That's over 250 ft lbs, still quite lethal.
