Do you like em thick or thin?

It's not what it can cut, it's how easily it can do it.

Ever try to cut cardboard with a thick knife.....then done it with something like a 2mm thick Spyderco? WORLD of difference. Thin knives go through stuff like a light saber....even when they are partially dull.

I totally understand, I have a 52100 knife that's around 1mm thick, it zips through cardboard and stuff. But my point is, to hear some people say it, it's like they'd starve if they only had a thick knife to cut the apple with.

Oh... I gotcha.

Hey, don't mock.
I died of starvation yesterday because all my knives were too thick.
I got better though. ;)

if we are cutting tree branches, roots, wires, and similar things, thick blades are preferred.

For chopping at roots, my fav tool is the Cold Steel Kukri machete. It's too thick (2.8mm, no distal taper) and top-heavy to be used as a machete,
but it's great if you're chopping around dirt and rocks.
Branches, bamboo, and brush: machete.
For wires, I prefer to use someone else's knife.

If I ever find myself with only an apple and a thick knife, I just bite the damn apple.

Aside, I bought my CSKM a few years back from Baryonyx, special grade.
Especially with Cold Steel's 1055, It's worth a few extra bucks to have 42 put an edge on your machete.

I'd just eat the apple whole before id try to cut it up with a 1/4 inch thick knife

When you walk walk 40 kilometers a day, a knife with a thick blade you want to throw in the bushes. If you sit in front of the computer goes the knife with the blade thickness 5 mm.
Sorry.

Who the hell walks 40 kilometers a day?
Even before my back started with wonderful chronic spasms, even before my knees decided that they hated me on many days, I never walked 40 kilometers a day.
Even when I was walking through the woods for many hours at a time, that was not the case.

40 kilometers is the length of a marathon (well, 1.8429 kilometers less).
If you are wanting a thread about what knife to carry while running a marathon, that is a different thread. ;)

(40 kilometers a day...:D )

Nah, probably ancient Roman sandals.
I read that they used to do forced marches of about 35 kilometers, after working up to it.

Haha...

Exactly . I put cork handles on my knive , 2.5mm thick blade .Dead weight /unnecessary/ kills over a long walk ... I even threw support rod /AL/ from my rucksack

Mule might work.
Or an ATV or dirt bike.

But if you're claiming to walk 40 kilometers per day through the wilderness, well, I have some prime acreage on Mars to sell you. ;)
If someone claimed 20 kilometers, I'd congratulate them on having a better back than me, but I'd be able to believe it.

Why would I want to walk 40km a day through wilderness? I don't even want to walk to my fridge to make a sandwich. :p:D

No ATV , only mule can go there ....Well about 20 in one way ,with approximately 20 kg weight .....on returns with much less. Because it is difficult to catch fish even there :)

Perhaps the mule could carry me on the way out. :D
I might, might, be able to do 20 km in one direction, but going the other way wouldn't work out so great.

On here I look robust, because I can pick what to show. :)
I can show the nice hike in, the sawing, chopping, fire, cooking and all the rest...maybe even crafting something neat out there.

What I don't post are the pictures of me painfully laying in the recliner the next day(s), full of pills, where the walk to the bathroom is a chore.

Sadly, carrying less doesn't seem to affect the painful outcome all that much.
Carrying too much can make it worse though, I did learn that. :)
The choice of knife doesn't affect the weight enough to go change it though.
