Do you own a Cowboy Hat?

I wear my hat daily and usually get a new one every couple of years. For some reason I have a hard time throwing the old ones away and it drives my wife nuts.
I was raised in northern Arizona and when I was a kid we did not wear shirts or hats much in the summer . About 10 years ago I had a spot removed from my back that turned out to be melanoma. There are not many days here in the arctic that you have to worry about getting sunburned but when I visit the south I would rather wear a hat at than sun screen. It is interesting how the brims get wider as you go south.

I order my hats online from hats.com. Terry , they have a good selection in the larger sizes.

Bought a 100% Beaver felt cowboy hat a while back, like, 35 years, in Williams Lake, British Columbia where we lived then. It's still good and has seen me through a lot of weather and campfire smoke.

I live in Durango Colorado, of course I have a cowboy hat :)

I actually have 3:
1: "cheapie" wool center dent/teardrop shape in brown made by Renegade Fall and winter everyday wear
2: Resistol straw Ty Murray Collection Summer wear
3: a 4x Beaver Stetson in "silver" that is about to be recrafted to a center dent/teardrop style

Great thread!

I'm thinking about getting one of those, not just for the sun but for the rain. We get quite a bit of that over here :)

As long as you keep some mink oil or Sno-seal on them they are very water proof. You will look like Crocadile Dundee mate!:D

Mine is 16 years old and not a tear or hole anywhere.

For Fur-felt hats this is from http://www.thelastbestwest.com/popups/cowboy_hat_facts.html#Open

Cowboy Hat Care
Traditional Cowboys never cleaned their Cowboy Hat - other than a simple slap with their hand, or against their leg as they picked themselves up. A rinsing was something rain or snow provided, or the hat got a bath when it's owner did. Good Hats were for the wealthy, a Range Cowboy made do with one - for every occasion. We subscribe to the traditionalist way - let your custom fur-felt cowboy hat age gracefully with you!

* When your hat gets wet let it dry naturally. Don't put it in the furnace room or use a blow dryer on it!
* Never lay your hat brim down. This puts a lot of stress on the brim and will cause it to lose its shape. Be sure that you place the hat on its crown with the brim up.
* Hang the hat on a hat stand or some other such perch. The edge of a shelf works good - then the curled part of the brim is not taking any weight. Pant hangers (the clip kind) work very well - then your hat can be hung in the closet. Saddle horn works best!
* KEEP THE BOX YOUR CUSTOM HAT COMES IN FOR STORAGE OR TRAVEL. You could also make a cardboard ring that will hold the crown of the hat snugly. If you're storing your hat for an extended period - put it in a bag as dust will damage your hat over time - but be sure to leave the bag open slightly to allow air to circulate. If you don't mildew may occur.
* Always try to leave your hat in a cool, dry environment. NEVER in direct sunlight - or fading may occur. Probably not the best idea to leave it in your vehicle.
* Should you spill a beer or other beverage on your hat rinse the spot immediately and brush with your finger. Let the hat dry naturally.
* If you get chocolate or some other sticky substance on your hat let it dry before attempting to clean. Grab a small knife and gingerly scrap the crud off. If you want to try returning it to like new - there are numerous commercial cleaners available for your Cowboy Hat. Your local seamstress/cobbler likely has a selection to choose from.

Ya never know when info like this will come in handy. ;)

I own several hats, and I wear a soft felt hat almost every day. Here in Silicon Valley that guarantees you do not look like everyone else on the street. ;)

As for the person who said he would get mugged or kicked out of California for wearing a hat, I suggest lightening up a bit. I never got anything but compliments on my hat. I don't know where in California you live, but it sure isn't in my area.

You bet. I have black felt Stetsons, Resistols, and a few straw and palm leaf Resistols and Bandera's. I really like the George Strait editions because they already have the shape that I wear.

I have 3 cowboy hats, I ware em to work in on ma farm and when I am riding and what not. Hunting sometimes but only when its warm.

But, have you been "up to your ear" in one?:D .

No, but I think I know what you're referring to! ;) :D ;)

But speaking of the other stuff that comes forth one outlet up (;) ) - I HAVE been up to my ears in THAT! Happened at my cousin's birthday party. A few of us boys were horsing around and I fell into the holding tank where they keep the liquid part that's later sprayed onto the fields as fertilizer. While the rest of the kids had ice cream and cake downstairs, I sat in a tub of soapy water upstairs! :D

I have several and I wear them for formal occasions.

NO....and after living in Houston for several years I'm sure I'll never own one

:jerkit: :jerkit:

2 Stetson straws for summer
(along with a very classy Panama)
A Resistol crusher for winter.
I'm amazed how a brimmed hat is warmer than a (full material-no mesh) ball cap.
Then there are the gift hats...one all leather, and a couple of low budget felt hats. Including a short brimmed crusher from Cabelas that is still chuggin along after 20 something years.
Here's the older Stetson, wifey bought it for me the year before Urban Cowboy came out.

The rules for wear are good. But I've broken a whole bunch of the care rules
The girls sure like it when you tip your hat to them.
:D

Wally, I don't think I've ever seen you without a cowboy hat on. Over the years how many of your hats do you think I've seen?

Hhmm...Phil that link should work for you mate as it worked for Mongo.

But here it is on imageshack.

Just a simple straw rodeo style cowboy hat, nothing out of the ordinary, but it's my favourite style by far.

Anyone happen to know how well straw hats resist the weather elements?

Our winters are pretty mild so I could get away with just one hat even in winter, even a straw perhaps. But it does tend to rain a bit here.

Four, two resistols, one a straw, the other a dark brown felt.
one stetson in silver, one bailey in a light tan, all are about the same style, what my father used to call the ranch owners hat. They look better on me that the extremely big hats, and they stay on better, I started wearing them when I was working in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana doing construction. Hardly wear them at all here unless i am working on the in laws farm, spending all day in the tractor seat seems like time to wear them, <img src=http://a60.g.akamai.net/f/60/7267/1d/sheplers.download.akamai.com/7267/i/colors/096/096373c04.jpg>
