Do You Still Like Your Southard?

I love my southard. The only reason it doesnt see much use is because I dont have a second to keep in pristine condition. I even like the clip on the southard despite many people hating it. I really hope spyderco comes out with more flippers soon because they obviously know what they are doing.

Use it! It'll make you love it more. Performence of knives is the deal breaker for me.

currently out of rotation but decided it to be a keeper in collection and will eventually be back in EDC rotation.

I have no idea what knife that is, but it looks absolutely sick. I love my Southard btw, probably my favorite flipper. Hopefully the opportunity to hard use it will afford itself while I carry it, as I carry something different everyday

Interesting. I didn't think they would try to execute a choil like that. Is it comfortable to use in that configuration? It doesn't look like it would be.

Thanks,
JD

The finger choil is a tad small, but luckily my finger isn't that big. I'll probably grind the end of the blade so I won't end up cutting myself. It does help it cut a lot. You can definitely do more controlled push cuts. I like it. When I was using it, it made me wonder what would happen if the Southard had a choil.

Getting used to the smaller handle and having a pocket clip complex. Not liking the clip so I'm getting used to without it.

It is not only my favorite spyderco. But my favorite knife.

Had mine for a while to. I still use my other knives. But the Southard is my #1 and the one I would reach for if i had to pick only one knife.

which i am going to do soon as i am leaving to europe (spain). The southard is coming with me and will be in my pocket teh whole time.

Still loving my Southard and carrying it a good amount. Although I feel like getting some new scales for it. Getting tired of the Brown G10. I am thinking CF.

You should rit dye before shifting to cf. It truly personalized my Southard when I did it. I'm waiting for someone to make a micarta scale for it.

I don't use pocket clips. So in my world, lighter is better. I'd be curious to know how much of a weight savings there might be in putting a CF scale on a Southard. FYI, the stock weight of the Southard is 4.1 ounces from the factory. If replacing the G10 scale with CF drops it into the 3-ounce range, that would be very nice.

The scale is pretty thin as is, its the thick blade and slabs of Ti that make up the weight. I'd be willing to bet you cant save 25% of the weight by swapping a thin strip of G10 for CF. Still you change (customize) the look and the feel to something you like better... who can argue with that.

I doubt there would be any significant weight changes between G10 and CF as they are both lightweight materials. I just have a preference for CF. Although Micarta does not sound like a bad idea....

Still digging the Southard. I picked up a ZT0560 which I like a lot too. The Southard's flipper/bearing system is much more refined of the two.

You're probably right. I'd be better off putting my money toward another knife than buying a CF scale to save what would amount to a nominal amount of weight.

I jumped on the bandwagon like everyone else when it first came out...(peer pressure in a sense, but really kinda stupid) I just never liked it so it's been sold. The thing I've really come to realize is smaller and thinner blades are much more useful for everyday tasks. Thinner blades are designed for slicing; they go through fruit like butta. Plus they're light weight and really it's all most of us will ever need. Who the fuck ever gets into a knife fight, right?
I still enjoy collecting blades but they are definitely < 3" and 1-2mm thick & flat ground if possible. Now if you go camping, hunting, cut up a shit load of cardboard boxes, plastic strapping fish heads etc.... sure get a RAT 1 or Ka-Bar mule or some other beast, but really the question is what do you need your blade to do for you on a daily basis. You just might find smaller and lighter is better

It's a damn near perfect knife. I've carried it almost every day for the last two months.
And I've developed selective OCD over that flipper. It's irresistible. :D

Anywhere to purchase some custom scales/get the anodizing treatment with Southards?
As soon as 1 of 2 sites gets them back in stock I will have one :)

I bought mine already pimped and love it.

Those CF sure are sparkly. I just there are cheaper alternatives than CF... Would be great if they had made white G10 scales for the Southard and just rit dye them to my hearts content. I'll be happy if there's a different G10 pattern
