Do you think Spyderco is wrong?

I like tactical type knives but am not comfortable carrying one that has a tactical moniker. Sinister names have been used more and more to let the buyer know it is tactical and to separate it from others. It does not help in the event it must be used tactically in a life or death situation whereby everyone points fingers as to who started it once it gets into court. The guy with the so-called "killer knife" will come out of the starting gates with a blemish in the minds of the jury. If the knife had a name like "work mate" or Handiman's helper", the owner of the knife will fare better.

I'm fine with it. I'd use one with the label on the blade or without, but as the possibility of legal issues complicate the use of one that's labeled, I certainly don't blame Spyderco for wanting to remove the etching. My knives are TOOLS, and I never want that to be mistaken. The law is an ass, so it's best to prevent them from proving they are!

I'm not crazy about large markings on blades to begin with so I'm fine with removing the names. I like the idea of a model number, steel type and the company logo.

No, not at all; I like Benchmade knives a lot and they typically mark their knives with just the model number, steel type and the Benchmade Butterfly. It has nothing to do with trying to appease the sheeple of the world.

I hate to see political correctness rear it's ugly head in any segment of society, but I can understand Spyderco's reasoning ...
I've carried a Spyderco Rookie almost everyday for the last six years. I like their knives. The name of the knife really makes no difference to me. It's their company and they can put on it whatever they want. I understand the change and know it's makes sense from what others have written here. Truthfully, I probably wouldn't have noticed the change or wondered about the reason for it until this thread. That said, the PC thing of it bothers me and I will always associate that with Spyderco from now on.

Greg

I really don't think it's political correctness. Just a smart business decision.

You can ignore the 'Police/Military=Weapon' factor and still see how it's a good idea.
